The first time i heard this one i broke down. I had a very very close friend that died 3 years ago of cancer at the age of 23, she has 2 beautiful little boys and it was so hard for me to listen to this one for a long time. To me the lines that pack the most punch...

{She fought so hard, her strength was insane, i will never find anyone with the strength that she had. All the angels that took her home,.and i'm sure that it took many}

{She did have blue eyes, but more than that it makes me think of her boys, her baby blues... (plus they both have her eyes}

{We became friends in that pivotal point when you are growing up where everyone around you shapes you and molds you into how you become. She was a major part of what makes me who i am, we did a lot of growing up together. She was the first very close friend that i have ever lost and it's really hard.}
And this is just how this song makes me feel, who i feel it is written for and i think that's what Dave wants, yes he wrote it for someone in his life, but he wants all of us to take it and mold it into something that we can understand.

and the referene to "angels" could be all the people Dave and his family have lost are now watching over him and his family.
it is the same tune to sister, it just seems to be more of a father-son relationship he's singing about now. and one of his twin daughters, Stella literally asked him, daddy when are you going to put me in a song? and he wrote Alligator Pie with that line in mind on a trip to New Orleans (as I've heard THAT in an interview)so possibly he could have been thinking of writing lyrics about his boy (who I believe is his youngest!)
and it does go ".. your kiss STILL knocks me off my legs" maybe as in even to this day is shocked when his little boy kisses him (?)
I will admit none of us know, and Dave likes to keep his "meanings" to himself and open for listener interpretation. Also the songwriter sometimes just sings about an imaginary situation, not necessarily his/her life, but like how a story/script writer imagines characters or a scenario.
