Lyrics for Baby Blue as interpreted by T_D_Phoenix

Baby Blue Lyrics
Confess your kiss still knocks me off my legs
First time I saw you was like a punch right through my chest
I will forever because you'll forever be
My one true broken heart pieces inside of me
And you forever my baby

You will rest your head, your strength wants saving
And when you wake you will fly away
Holding tight to the legs of all your angels
Goodbye my love into your blue blue eyes in your blue blue world
You're my baby blue

Confess not quite ready to be left
Still I know I gave my level best
You give, you give, to this I can attest
You made me, you made me, you and me forever baby

You will rest your head, your strength wants saving
And when you wake, you will fly away
Holding tight to the legs of all your angels
Goodbye my love into your blue blue eyes in your blue blue world

You and me forever

Wow... not sure what to say about this song. Its beautiful is all I think one can say. Dave's farewell to Leroi. The studio recording is absolutely touching, dave's emotional voice and the true rawness of it brings tears

This song made my cry... it forces such a sense of empathy on me that I felt like I knew how Dave was feeling when he lost LeRoi, or how close they were

this is one of my favorites on the album...id say this and time bomb are number 1...closely followed by squirm and lying in the hands of god, which are followed by spaceman

I find the placement of this song just after time bomb on the studio album really is suitable. time bomb seems so full of pain and anger, the first reaction to a horrible loss, this song then comes in and soothes the listener you get the sense that all that pain and anger have been felt and dealt with and what you are left with is a sense of peace if not understanding of loss.

are we sure this is for his sister...because, according to many sources (the new RS review for one), its leroi....if he finally released 'sister', i dont understand why as his sister died quite a while ago, and more importantly, he had tons of more anticipated songs that fans wanted (SHOTGUN!)

Def about his sister...songs that Dave does that never get on an album always transform into something new and
hes always playing with his lyrics...I have had the pleasure of hearing many live songs like cornbread, shotgun,
crazy easy, breakfree, etc etc.....take crazy easy for example it has never been the same EVER!!!

Confess your kiss still knocks me off my legs
The first time I saw you was like a punch right
through my chest

I confess I'm not quite ready to be there
Still I know I gave my level best
You give you give to this I can attest
You made me you made me
You and me forever baby

First time he saw his baby sister at that he will live the rest of his life, but know that she made him into who he is today....just my thoughts....this and sister are both very heart felt and beautiful with a very strong passion

This is my favorite song on the new album and I think it’s going to be great live.

I do agree it’s for his sister. Listening to the intro to sister and this song is very identical.

But like many Dave songs, they can have more than one interpretation. It could be a final tribute to Leroi finally saying bye, since in an interview he wishes he would have said bye to him.

I also think it’s a love song about two lovers who split up for the meantime but know they will eventually spend forever together:
A guy splits up with a girl because he is preoccupied in something else and knows he would not have time for a relationship in this part in his life or is even seeing another woman. He’s torn apart from the break-up, but he knows it must be done. He sees that the girl is an emotional wreak but cannot do anything to help her. But he knows eventually they will be get back together and be together forever.

This song can be about Leroi or his sister. Like a previous user said this song have several meanings.
To me this song remind of lost love. Love that was so deep but it was lost somewhere on the way.
"Confess, your kiss still knocks me off my legs.
The first time I saw you was like a punch right through my chest
and I will forever, ‘cause you’ll forever be
my one true broken heart, pieces inside of me
and you’ll forever, my baby be."

I remember the first time I was kissed by my love it knock me right off my feet and the first time I saw him I was just taken away. I will forever have feelings for him because I know he will to. Both our hearts were broken and the pieces are still in me. Thats my own take on the song. Its hard to put strong feelings into words so sorry about the writing.

the song immediately made me think of my 1 year old daughter and her blue eyes. i flashed forward 20 years to when she leaves for college, gets married, has her own kids. the song impressed me as one focused on unconditional love, having to let go for the right reasons, and never forgetting the feelings left to you by someone so important in your life.

it could just be a function of where i am in my life right now. but like w/ so many other dmb songs, it talked to me in ways that few other artists can.

I don't think this song is necessarily about a specific person, rather that it is about several people at once. Primarily I think it's about his sister, because that just makes sense, but it could also be partially about LeRoi (even though he didn't have blue eyes), perhaps even about his daughter(s) (do both of them have blue eyes?). It's a song of mourning and rememberance.

This song is about how he wasn't ready to leave the thought of losing his sister "Confess not quite ready to be left" and that pain being revisited by the loss of LeRoi Moore. It's a tribute to two of his most memorable hard times shown through repitition, "You give, you give..," "You made me, you made me..."

"Goodbye my love into your blue blue eyes in your blue blue world..." He's letting go of Anne's death so that he can mourn LeRoi.

I can relate the need to move on after losing someone close as I never got over a close one that past before.

I think this song is about losing a loved one in general, so in a way it' about LeRoi AND his sister, and his dad, his grandfather...who knows?

He wrote "Grace is Gone" about his stepfather's death, but equated it to losing a loved one, so it's not outside the realm that even though he mentions "baby blue eyes" that it's not about LeRoi

In the interview the band does with CBS Sunday Morning he tells the interviewer that he hasn't completely dealt with his father's or his sister's death. This song maybe a release for their's and LeRoi's death. The fact that it so closely resembles "Sister" makes this all more apparent.

I agree that it's not specifically about LeRoi or specifically about his sister. It's about losing someone and saying goodbye. He obviously wrote this with both of their deaths hanging over his head, but I don't think you can say they are about either individually. Terrific song though. He's got one hell of a voice. I like this, Time Bomb, and Lying In the Hands of God.

"Kiss" could be a metaphor for Roi's lips around the sax, or just the idea of him playing music...and Dave was knocked off his legs. Same concept for the second line...a punch right through his chest.

And I don't know Roi's eye color, but if Roi is in a blue world, then the reflection off his eyes would be blues staring back at Dave. Or perhaps blue is a metaphor itself...for peacefulness and beauty. What other color illicets those ideas besides blue?

That said, I don't know, I never hear guys calling other guys 'baby'...even when telling them they love them.

Love this song. My favorite off the album. Whether it's about Roi or his sister is irrelevant. Regardless it is an amazing song and has it's own special meaning to me.

I just had to make an account on here, so I can't find the comment I had something to say about, but I would have to agree with this:

It is in all probability about is sister. One person on here mentioned the resemblance of Baby Blue to Dave's other song Sister, and I'll be honest, I just watched the concert he and Tim did at Radio City, and when he started to play Sister, I could swear it was Baby Blue, but obv it couldnt have been, as that was over 2 years ago. The two sound very similar.

Besides, 'Why I Am' is LeRoi's jam.

What does it mean to you? Maybe Dave wants you to make your own meaning? For me it is a song about my youngest son leaving home. Brings back memories of when he was born and how fast time goes by. Is there any truer love than that you have for a child? My "Baby Blue" was born with blonde hair, blue eyes and serious heart defects. He made it through it all and is now a freshman in college, my Baby Blue!

This song cannot be taken as a literal representation of any such love or loss in Dave's life. He had been quoted as saying he hadn't even thought of himself of getting over his father's death at the time LeRoi had passed. Life had been this wrecking ball on his obvious fragile heart. Dave, being someone who can sort and disseminate his emotions, however reckless they break through, has a natural gift to catch the rest of us in awe. It took Dave most of his tour to find the strength to play this song and it was because of the emotional ties to it. It is about his lost friend but like most artists tries to turn it into something infatuated so as not to directly release the pain it causes. In retrospect, this is very much about LeRoi but it is also about the emotional state on which Dave was writing under. Losing someone you love very much brings back many other losses from the past. This is a collection for him of those pains. It's a pain he wants to let find happiness and not fester. It's a sad fear of loneliness with a sly relief of absolution. To me, it's one of the most personal and beautiful songs he's written since Grey Street and Stay or Leave.
