the nicest man i ever met
was more malicious than malcontent
yeah, he taught me how to hold my tongue
and wait to strike 'til their backs were turned

and you slither away like the snake that you are.
and you slither away like the snake that you are.

all i ever did was look up to you
and if all i ever did was let, let you down
ain't nothing stopping me now.

divinity spelt correctly beneath
the receding pride of his twenties
was capital m-e (i couldn't subscribe)
was capital m-e (but you can't say i didn't try)
you say what you want (maybe i didn't get my way)
so you say what you want (maybe i didn't get my way)
but i got, i got away.

all i ever did was look up to you
and if all i ever did was let, let you down
ain't nothing stopping me now.

was it everything you hoped for?
was it all of that and more?
too much too soon?
or too good to be true?
was it everything you hoped for?
was it all of that and more?

all i ever did was look up to you
and if all i ever did was let, let you down
ain't nothing stopping me now.
all i ever did was look up to you
and if all i ever did was let, let you down
ain't nothing stopping me now.

General Comment:I didn't realize until i heard this song how bitter tbs was towards fred. They blatantly call him selfish and arrogant. It's sad if you ask me. They are all so talented.

General Comment:ive met fred, and although this song is (obviously) about fred, i didn't see this person when i spoke to him. fred's a nice guy. very nice, kindhearted and a great musician.. but then again, adam did spend like, day and night with him, on tour and whatnot. i only saw fred a day, so i guess i wouldn't know for sure, but these are just my two cents.

General Comment:what im confused about is "divinity spelt correctly beneath the receding pride of his twenties was capital m-e."
does this mean adam is referring to fred thinking so highly of himself that he almost views himself--godlike? i know it seems far off but i mean, thats the meaning of divine/divinity. and i almost get the vision of tombstone when i think of the lyrics...really far off possibly i have no idea. but when you read a tombstone you usually see things to be remembered by and then your name, and in fred's twenties, he worked with tbs but didn't really work for the band but instead, himself. THATS HOW I SEE IT. i mean im just building off of what everybody already knows. everyone already knows the song is about fred, but what i want to know is what the song refers to rather than whom. i want to know the literary content, so please stop saying its about fred: we know.

My Opinion:It's about Fred, obvious, but this band has more former members than current, a lot of their songs are about former members, I thought we dropped the whole thing after Where you want to be with no Nolan... so maybe TBS is encouraging them to buy his stuff, Brand New did the same thing with Deja Entendu (TBS was in the list of bands they recommended). If you listened to "Tell All Your Friends" or even Louder Now you can tell there's a difference, personally I liked the Nolan and Fred Days, not sure about New Again though.

    General Comment:In the lyrics:

"the receding pride of his twenties
    was capital m-e (i couldn't subscribe)
was capital m-e (but you can't say i didn't try)"

Capital m-e is just another way of saying "ME" correct?

General Comment:For those that are wondering about the tension between TBS and Fred, this quote is by Fred after leaving TBS.
"There were just problems between the five of us about writing, who was going to do it and how we were going to do it, we weren't being very productive because we were fighting too much about that stuff. The band was more about cooking food than making music."

Comments like these caused Adam to write Summer, Man and Capital M-E.

General Comment:i don't know why you guys are saying some parts were "written for fred" or with him in mind. taking back sunday has always been a band with two singers long before fred joined. it was that way with john, too. adam sings WAY more on this album than on any other one so it's kind of weird to me that you think some parts were written for fred (or a second singer at all) when adam sings practically everything. i think this song is great and serves fred right because the guys were so nice in the press about his leaving and then he goes and writes all those songs about them and talks crap to magazines, that's messed up. clearly adam and the guys looked up to him and they stabbed him in the back so this song serves him right. fred = jerk who was not as good as john nolan anyway so his departure was not a tragedy whereas john's departure was and no i am still not over it.

General Comment:fred left because he didnt like the direction the band was heading, plus it added onto a reason to go solo or do another project. john nolan left because of personal problems with adam i think, and there was a girl involved :P
