I don't want another lover
So don't keep holding out your hands
There's no room beside me
I'm not looking for romance
Say I'll be here, I'll be here
But there's no way you'd understand

All I want
All I want
All I want
When I don't even know myself

I don't want another partner
So don't try and break the spell
I can't even understand me
So don't think that you can help
When I say things and see things
That's no way on earth to tell

What I want
What I want
What I want
'Cos I don't even know myself

No-one wants to be lonely
But what am I to do?
I'm just trying to be honest
I don't want to hurt you too
When I'll be there, I'll be there
I know I sound confused

But all I want
All I want
All I want
All I want
All I want
See, all I want
All I want
Is to one day come to know myself

I think she wants to know what she wants. She seems lost, and pulls away from relationships with people to avoid hurting them. And she knows she needs to sort herself out first, to come to an understanding with herself, before she can move on and let other people in. She knows only she can help herself, but she doesn't know how to, and just hopes that she'll get there one day. She's desperately lonely, but she knows she can't open up to other people without opening up to herself first.

    I really like this song.

personally, in how i relate to it, it's pretty simple to understand. what can you give another person, if you're not certain what you have to give? if you can't understand yourself, if you're unsure what it is you want, how can you let someone help? and, it's true, generally no one wants to be lonely, but it can be quite a struggle when you're lost, and confused, and just trying to figure things out. you're still finding out what it takes and how to be fulfilled or satisfied with yourself, at all, let alone completely (this can be a lifelong process). is there anything unreasonable in the idea of the inability "to be" for someone else, when you don't even know what that means? what would you, how should you be? what defines you, how do you represent yourself? when someone says they love you, what do they love you for? is it how you'd want to be loved? perhaps, some people just are, and they don't think so much about it. clearly, i'm not one of those people... :)

I think this song is about wanting to be happy-single, or sort yourself out before being involved with someone. Or, maybe as in my situation, kinda resisting any dating because you're still in love with someone else, and you dont want that to change, and so what you kinda say to ppl - like she's not dating, she doesnt want 'another' partner, and she's using this time to 'know herself' a little better. (i realise tht might sound creepy n weird, but he loves me too and i fly to england soon lol).

also, it sounds like she's trying to explain something to someone that's not always so easy to say the right way... because it can so easily be misconstrued and taken personally. this seeems most evident just in your interpretations above about a past love, or another love, etc... none of which have anything to do with it, imo. i think the song's basically rather straightforward, and honest, as when she says, "i'm just trying to be honest, i don't want to hurt you too"... and, it is really easy to hurt someone by getting involved with them at a time when you're not ready to.

When woman is alone, everybody is suprised.... It is so uncommon to live on your own, choose another way. It is so usually to use people to fill in all our disadvantages, but when we don't know ourselves.... how can we gingerly be with others ? For me it is about it.

Behind all these thoughts that might sound confused there's one truth bigger than the rest:

No-one wants to be lonely But what am I to do?

I'm just trying to be honest I don't want to hurt you too

She seems to be with someone who loves her but she doesn't, someone who, in different circumstances she would never be with, she's telling him and accepting for herself that she's using someone, this is no good but by the moment she's unable to refused the proposal, in a non-compromising way.

When I'll be there, I'll be there

This waekness moments when you wish you were stronger enough to face it all by yourself, but you realized you don't, you haven't got over the past. Obviously (like you say guys) she's dueling herself after a breakup.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
