That's a frosty way to speak,
To tell me how to live next to your potpourri
All this talking pulls my teeth.
I believed in you, so you believed in
[Chorus]
Me, I cried out "God"
You dared me in the dark
I felt a hush fall quietly from my spark
so now I hide in piles of princely orange peels
It feels the way you told me how it'd always feel..
Once I had an name to call you.
It scraped along the walls like an orthodox saint.
I wish for the same old things that turn me inside out.
Hearing is a strain, it's a game!
[Chorus]
Never have I ever been
Clutching at your hair to cure you of some sin,
But that's the kind of state I'm in:
Swimming in a pool of godly medicine.
"Come, come," I hear it calling me, yelling,
Like if ever there was someone who could make things heavy again.
Feel alive!
[Chorus:Repeat x2]
Feel alive!

The first verse is talking about a person who is not part of this society where not being Christian (symbolized as potpourri) isn't acceptable, so after much badgering they agree to give it a shot. In the chorus is about how they actually do give it a try, and for a moment they're hoping it really is reality, so that they can live happily. However, they feel nothing from it (a hush crawling from my spark), but pretend to feel it so they can live in this community peacefully. The next two verses are then going into the extreme sense of Christianity, because they're afraid they're too casual about, people will know they're faking. "Come, come hear it calling..." etc is then their inner desire for freedom from this so they can 'feel alive' again, but decide that they should wait, because if they stop in that community, it'll cause more trouble than it's worth.
To tell me how to live next to your potpourri
[religion often tells us how to "live" and how we are sinners and god is perfect. potpourri symbolizes perfectness. coz it smells really good. so yes, its quite frosty to demand us to live perfectly when humans are flawed.]
All this talking pulls my teeth.
I believed in you, so you believed in
[Chorus]
Me, I cried out "God"
You dared me in the dark
[you can tell from first verse that there is a "doubt". dared me in the dark.]
I felt a hush fall quietly from my spark
[spark often symbolizes god's love or power. a hush fell quietly. continues the doubting theme.]
so now I hide in piles of princely orange peels
[princely - jesus being the son of god. orange peels - referring to the perfectness of potpouri]
[so i hide in piles of it. because i am ashamed to admit that i am human and flawed.]
It feels the way you told me how it'd always feel..
[possible sarcasm.]
Once I had a name to claim.
It scraped along the walls like an orthodox saint.
[a saint who would hold on to his beliefs - to the "name to claim" until death. so his own "name to claim" is now being scraped along the walls. its dieing.]
I wish for the same old things that turn me inside out.
Keeling in such pain, it's a game!
[possibly the way we are addicted to things that cause us pain. its an explanation for why he hangs on to religion but acknowledges that its bad for him. like drugs. we know its bad but its hard to stop.
[Chorus]
Never have I ever been
Clutching at your hair to cure ME? of some sin,
But that's the kind of state I'm in:
Swimming in a pool of godly medicine.
[somehow he admits that he needs religion due to his current state. ironic huh.]
Come, come," I hear it calling me, yelling,
Like if ever there was someone who could make things heaven again.
Feel alive!
[could be sarcastic. there is a struggle between him and religion?]
this is "to kingdom come"?
but my itunes says its for "eyes as candles"
-Me, I cried out "God"
You dared me in the dark
(He tries to pray to appease her.)
-I felt a hush fall quietly from my spark
(No answer from heaven... Skepticism from her)
-so now I hide in piles of princely orange peels
It feels the way you told me how it'd always feel
(He fakes it, because if he admits he doesn't feel like God is listening (or there at all), she'll leave him; he tells her what she wants to hear, and live the way she wants him to live- "next to her potpourri")
Maybe?? I don't know... More discussion, please!
Once I had an name to claim,
It scraped along the walls like an orthodox saint.
I wish for the same old things
That turn me inside out,
Keeling in such pain...
it's a game!
