Sunday morning go the hazy, hazy jeans
I turn to you and inhale where you lay.
Took a wonder through the garden,
To awake the long long day
And then roll of a while on violet flower bed.

Oh, you kiss my lips again and again and again
And then again and then we watched the sun coming up easy
While the rain came tumbling down
And it watched our bodies so cleanly
We could see them rise up off of the cold cold ground.

Its a shame the way its seems to go
Cause now my best friend, my partner in crime
I'm afraid it looks like we're
Gonna have to go our separate ways.
You see the thing is I love you, I love you
But you see I resent you all the time.
All my other friends their just saying
Your slowing me down.

Oh I should have known
You'd turn to me and say
Before you throw too much of me away.
Don't you remember seeing the sun coming up easy
While the rain came tumbling down.
And it washed out bodies so cleanly
Seen them rise up off of the cold cold ground.

We seen the sun coming up easy
While the rain came tumbling down
And it washed our bodies so clean
We could feel them rise up off of the cold cold ground.

It was in love I was created
And in love is how I hope I die
And in love is how I hope I die

My Interpretation:'Coming Up' is a term used for when MDMA/Ecstasy is starting to take affect, so I'm guessing that the song is about MDMA/Ecstasy but has links to Weed because it is normally the gateway towards other drugs like MDMA

My Interpretation:This song has become one of my personal favorites over the past few months, and I think that this song is able to communicate such a beautiful message in such a short and simple way that someone needs to take an in depth look at the song. So here goes my attempt:
(The lyrics may not be perfect, I just copied them from above, but they still get the point across)

"Sunday morning, got the hazy, hazy janes,"
Starting off his Sunday, which is supposed to be a day of rest, and already his mind has turned to weed. Even on the day of rest he cannot take a break from smoking.

"I turn to you and inhale you where you lay."
I think this line is pretty much self explanatory.

"Took a wander through the garden,"
Started his journey into the blissful feeling you get once you smoke, wandering, not knowing where it is going to take him.

"To await the long, long day,"
Weed drags out all experiences, slows down your perception, and at the beginning of his high he is waiting for the affects that he knows will soon becoming on.

“And then roll for a while on a violet flowerbed.”
Once he can start to feel the high coming on, we rolls around in it, soaking up the best part of the high, when the high is just coming on and everything is changing and wonderful.

“Oh, you kiss my lips again and again and again,
    And then again, again”
He doesn't say that he is kissing “her”, but rather that “she” is kissing him, which is where we start to notice that maybe he is not totally in control of his habit.

“We would watch the sun coming up easy,”
The warm feeling you get from the sun coming up is very similar to the familiar feeling of getting high, where all things are relaxed.

“While the rain came tumbling down,
And it would wash our bodies so cleanly”
Sometimes, after you smoke too often, when you aren't high things begin to become hazy in your everyday life, and you need the weed to take away this dull feeling.

“That we would seem to rise up off of the cold, cold ground”
After smoking, you can become disconnected from the crazy world we live in, and you can leave your troubles behind, which is why it is such a popular thing to do.

“It's a shame the way it seems to go”
It is a shame that we have to smoke something that is illegal to get rid of the troubles in our lives, but cest la vie.

“But now my best friend, my partner in crime”
When you first start smoking, you do it with your friends, and you do it as an activity together. However, the roles may become reversed after some time to where you are smoking with just anybody just to get high, or just doing it by yourself. You begin to associate with weed more than you do than any of your real life people friends.

“I'm afraid it looks as though we're gonna have to go our separate ways,”
He comes to the realization that he can no longer go on smoking weed and that their paths must differ just as they once began.

“Oh, See, the thing is, I love you.
I love you but you see, I resent you all the same.”
He loved the drug, the feeling it gave him, the experiences he had while under the influence, but he cannot both have the drug without the ill effects. People are able to handle drugs in different ways. I know people who have been able to use hard drugs once and never touch it again, just to try it, while others can fall into addiction after just one attempt with it.

“All my other friends say you're just slowing me down.”
It would be too easy to pin this on being a comment on the effect weed has on the brain to slow reaction time, so I won't do that here.
Instead, I think he is talking about how the drug is holding him back from experiencing other parts of life, not going out with friends because you want to stay in, watch a movie and get high. Or getting too high and forgetting to do something, putting off goals so that you can stay in the place you are in so you can keep getting high.

“Oh, but I should have known you'd turn to me and say,
Before you through too much of me away”
Some people believe that they can handle just smoking every now and then, and that they are in control of their bodies, and sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong. Sometimes an addict will tell themselves that they will just cut back their use and everything will be fine, however, due to an addicts personality, clearly this would be a difficult task.

“Don't you remember watching the sun coming up easy
While the rain came tumbling down?
And it washes our bodies so cleanly,
We just seem to rise up off of the cold, cold ground.
I see the sun coming up easy,
while the rain came tumbling down.
And it washed our bodies so clean
That we seemed to rise up off of the cold, cold ground”

“It was in love I was created and in love is how I hope I die.”
It was through his love of weed that he has become the person he is now, and clearly the plant has changed him from who he was before. He hopes that in the same way that it was through the love of weed and the joy of getting high that he became an addict, he hopes that he will find the same joy and love in a sober life, and that his addiction doesn't cause him to regress. He hopes that through the love of life, in all it's wonder and joy, that he can kill off the person he has become.

“Yeah it was in love I was created and in love is how I hope I die (repeated)
We watched the sun coming up easy (repeated)”

Different people have different personalities and some people cannot handle something even as innocent as weed. As a drug that has no physical addictive qualities (honest fact, not only from my opinion, but from the minds of some of my teachers, all of whom were ardent non-smokers) it can be very mentally addictive. Anything can become addictive like this, and it's when we build our lives around something that we can notice that are lives, everything in them, can be swallowed by it. Even if this song is about weed, you can relate it to whatever you are addicted to in your life, be it cigs, food, video games, or even religion(in the cases of cults-- not getting preachy or anything).

I hope you like my interpretation (it is just one of infinite) and I hope this sparks other people to submit theirs. Cheers mate.

(Now after all this talk about weed I'm starting to get a little anxious myself, time to go burn one myself ;) )

Song Meaning:The song is clearly about weed addiction, for anyone who isnt sure, here's my view.

Sunday morning, got the hazy, hazy JANES
-"Janes are a term used for being high on weed, in this case, Hazy Janes most likely refers to the morning after he was high on Saturday night"

I turn to you and inhale you where you lay.
    - "The spliff is still smoking on the bedside table or something"

Took a wander through the garden,

To await the long, long day,

And then roll for a while on a violet flowerbed.

Oh, you kiss my lips again and again and again,
-"He cannot stop smoking the joint, 'you' refers to the weed, it is literally kissing his lips"

    And then again, again
    -"Once again, he cannot stop"

We would watch the sun coming up easy,
-"He hallucinates joyous things, hence the line below"

While the rain came tumbling down,
-"There is no sun 'coming up easy!'"

And it would wash our bodies so cleanly

That we would seem to rise up off of the cold, cold ground
-"Another hallucination from the effects of weed"

It's a shame the way it seems to go

But now my best friend, my partner in crime
-"His addiction makes him reluctantly conjoined to weed, hence becoming his 'best' friend"

I'm afraid it looks as though we're gonna have to go our separate ways,
-"He has decided that he must fight his addiction"

Oh, See, the thing is, I love you.
    -"He is addicted to weed"

I love you but you see, I resent you all the same.
-"But he is aware of the damage it is doing, and it trying to fight it"

All my other friends say you're just slowing me down.
-"His friends try to persuade him to stop smoking it, as weed does indeed slow the brain down!"

Oh, but I should have known you'd turn to me and say,
-"He will have withdrawal symptoms from giving it up."

Before you throw too much of me away

Don't you remember watching the sun coming up easy
-"Remember all the good times you had from weed"

While the rain came tumbling down?

And it washes our bodies so cleanly,

We just seem to rise up off of the cold, cold ground.

I see the sun coming up easy,

while the rain came tumbling down.

And it washed our bodies so clean

That we seemed to rise up off of the cold, cold ground

It was in love I was created and in love is how I hope I die.
-"He doesnt want to further damage his body from intoxication"

Yeah it was in love I was created and in love is how I hope I die (repeated)

We watched the sun coming up easy (repeated)

    There you are!!

Enough evidence to suggest the song is about his weed addiction!!!

General Comment:This song means more to me each time I hear it. At first I thought it just another really good love song. But now that I see it as having to do with Marijuana, I'm really impressed. This guy can write what he feels and he can feel.
I can only stop listening to it enough to listen to " last Request" Wow! I'm from the sixties and in my sixties...And I stopped listening to new artist with REM...But this guy has hit all the right spots.
I'm back Baby! I'm back! Thanks to Paolo, I'm back and loving it!
