Lyrics for A Rite of Passage as interpreted by YtseJam

A Rite of Passage Lyrics
Since the new world order
Played upon our fears
Spreading accusations
Of radical ideas

The brotherhood of wisdom
Strength and dignity
Its rituals and secrets
Remain a mystery

Beneath an ever watchful eye
The angels of the temple fly

Turn the key
Walk through the gate
The great ascent
To reach a higher state
A rite of passage

The final stage
A sacred home
Unlock the door
And lay the cornerstone
A rite of passage

Men of wealth and power
Influence and fame
Philosophers and leaders
Are members of the trade

Bound by oath and honor
Like the rose and cross
An enigmatic union
of esoteric thought

Beneath an ever watchful eye
The angels of the temple fly

Turn the key
Walk through the gate
The great ascent
To reach a higher state
A rite of passage

The final stage
A sacred home
Unlock the door
And lay the cornerstone
A rite of passage

Turn the key
Walk through the gate
The great ascent
To reach a higher state
A rite of passage

The seven stars
The rising sun
A perfect world
Where new life has begun
A rite of passage

Pretty much a ceremony of joining an association such as the Freemasons or the Illuminati.

It's about the Freemasons. And is it me or does the main riff sound like the prechorus riff off Endless Sacrifice.

O not to mention this is going to be a great single.

"Beneath the ever watchful eye
The angels of the temple fly"

Fallen Angels anyone? Representatives of Lucifer?

This has a high conspiracy content, that's for sure.

New World Order
Brotherhood of Wisdom (clearly the Illuminati)
Cornerstone (Freemasonry)

"Turn the key walk through the gate
The great ascent to reach a higher state
A rite of passage"

What key, what gate, what ascent and what higher state?
The symbolic gates of heaven, protected by Peter?
Or a more physical key, and phyical gate leading to an esoteric cult as displayed above?

To me, this line is about turning yourself, instead of being led astray of our true goal.

"Men of wealth and power
Influence and fate
Philosphers and leaders
Are members of the trade"

Conspiracy aka awareness bit.

"Of radical fears" sounds like "Of radical ideas" to me.

Also, it sounds like it should be "Bound by oath and honor" rather than "Bound by open honor" and "esoteric thought" (not thoughts).

Great analysis LittlePrincezz!

I wonder if they'll cut the whole instrumental section out for the single... sounds like they could the way the riff plays before and after it.

What about "The great ascent to reach a higher state".
Does it make sense to be "a greater sense..."?

Oh, another minor adjustment;

Men of wealth and power,
Influence and FAME (instead of fate)

The brotherhood of wisdom
Stregnth and dignity (you mispelled STRENGTH)

And on your "greater sense" bit. I'm not completely sure. Could roll either way.

"A perfect world(,) a new, life has begun" Interpunction?

Here we are, discussing a pre-released song. Mike Portnoy must hate us now 8D

Purely out of interest, how did you get your hands on this song?

It is clearly talking about the "men behind of the curtain" "the Illuminati" (beneath the ever watching eye) that eye in the triangle simbol of the illumati (you can see it in the dollars bills) this worries me b/c I don't know if the lyrics critic this new world order fact or suport it, it appears that dont support it until the last verse

"The seven stars, the rising sun
A perfect world, a new life has begun"

that appears that John is supporting this fact...and a rite of passage is a ceremony of conversion which worries me, the new world order thing is obviously a bad bad thing including world domination and total control of the ppl if you aren't aware of all this please check out the documentary called "Zeitgeist" and "Zeitgeist Addendum" maybe it will clear out things...so the ppl who thinks that the song "Sacrifice Sons" is about "TERRORIST" attack of the 9/11 when the 9/11 was a act covered by this "men behind the curtain" as an excuse of going into war.

again...check out that documentary google it...

"Beneath the ever watchful eye"
Beneath an ever watchful eye

"Turn the key walk, through the gate"
Turn the key, walk through the gate.

Just nit picking. Its a good song for an attempt to be a single.

Definitely this song is about Freemasonry, starting from the single's artwork which shows a compass and a square, and mentioning many masonic symbols in this song: the watchful eye, flying angels, the key, the cornerstone, the seven stars, the rising sun.....

fantastic song, one of my DT's all time favorites

Rosecrusians, note the symbol is called the Rose Cross. They are all denominations of the same religion. The ignorant ones practice Wicca, the smarter ones practice Illuminatism, the ones at the top are Satanists. Pure and simple.

It does clearly reference Rosicrucians...

"Bound by oath and honor
Like the rose and cross
An enigmatic union
of esoteric thoughts"

...but it is not exactly a religion and it's certainly not the same as Wiccans or the Illuminati or Satanism. Although they're all very interesting...
It's another ancient secret society thing like Freemasonry and the Illuminati.

I would say the song is not about a specific group, but a general reference to all of this secret esoteric ancient things that are becoming more popular these days. Also, it's true it is not clear if the song's in favor or against... or probably neither; maybe it's exactly about the fact that we can't really know what's going on.

First of all...9/11 is not a conspiracy, don't even go there. Bush (rather, Cheney & Rumsfeld) did use it as an excuse for the Iraq war, but be assured Osama bin Ladin hates America. Kennedy's assassination was a conspiracy, but 9/11...not so much. Second of all, Wiccans, Illuminati, and Satanists don't have much to do with each other, so lets not offend any of those parties by lumping them with each other.

Now that I am off my soap box, to the song :)

The music video provides some interesting clues to the lyrics (assuming that there is a connection).
The first stanza states that their is a crisis from a new world order and that it is playing upon our fears, controlling the masses by accusing certain people of "radical ideas." In the video a book that looks like the Bible or some other holy book is being burned by the cultists. It seems like it could be that the Cultists are controlling people by making them afraid of free thinkers with good ideas,a la the Church and Galileo. There is also a scene where the cultists stand around a burning bush, a reference to the old testament voice of God. Whether they are servants or masters of the bush is unclear. The line about the angels flying seems rather sinister to me. Remeber not all angels are good, they are demons too.

After that, things break down. While the lyrics remain neutral, the video does not. A man is being initiated and a blade is drawn. It is unclear what happens after that. Later a cube, the "cornerstone" is shown emitting light. At the end, the head cultist is shown with glowing angel wings (reminds me of Tyrial from Diablo II) and envelopes all in an explosion. A clear sky is shown.

Perhaps the meaning could be sort of a double entente. It could be that these secret societies do exist and that they do know something important and can lead us to a better state. It also could be the they exist and do not have good intentions. Or it could be that they exist and think they know the way to a higher state, but they are wrong, so we must turn the key and place the cornerstone.

It could also be talking about the metaphorical journey that every human being desires (or at least the introspective ones) to reach a higher state. The esoteric imagery is powerful, because our consciousness is rooted in symbols. I do not really believe in esotericism of any sort, but I love tarot cards because of the powerful imagery that they use to paint the inner world of a human being. Even if consciousness is physical, man will never be able to reduce his mind to those physical things. Symbols such as the rose, the cross, and the cornerstone always hold great power. We are symbol oriented beings. We all must undergo a rite of passage if we wish to grow and it all seems esoteric on the inside when it isn't on the outside.

Well I have rambled a bit from the song, but this is what it makes me think about. Feel free to rip it apart ;)

one correction "Crisis, a new world order" is "Since the new world order".

Great song though. The chorus rivals Born by Nevermore as the best I have ever heard.

This song has great instrumentals but the lyrics are pretty bad. The chorus is the worst in my opinion. The worst on their new CD.

dont get me wrong its still a great song, the solo makes up for crappy lyrics.

Awesome song and it kinda throws in the band's possible idea of the New World Order and many powerful groups coming together to take over. Kinda my opinion on it especially after seeing Zeitgeist.

This and sacrificed sons is probably their reaction to Metropolis 2000: Live Scenes From New York being delayed till 9/11 considering the artwork and Elektra being part of WMG

As a Freemason myself it is pretty easy to connect almost all the lyrics to Masonry... Not the illuminati or rosecrucianism. The rose and cross refers to the Rose-Croix Degree in the Scottish Rite, an appendant body of Blue Lodge Freemasonry.
