Love, love is like a stubborn youth
That you'd rather just annoy
I'm walking on a broken roof
While I'm looking at the sky

It's all false love and affection
You don't like me you just want the attention [repeat 2x]
I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy [repeat 2x]

Love, love I'm in a smoky light
I can never find the truth
Boy, your touches leave me mystified
I wish I could believe in you

Yes, it's all false love and affection
You don't like me you just want the attention [repeat 2x]
I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy [repeat 2x]
I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy [repeat 2x]

It's all false love and affection
You don't like me you just want the attention [repeat 2x]

[Instrumental Break]

I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy [repeat 2x]
I'm not your toy
This isn't another girl meets boy [repeat 2x]

General Comment:I agree with wastedbritishyouth's explanation completely. After I heard the song that was exactly how I took it. I just got out of a "situation" like that so I really love and relate to this song.

My Interpretation:I thought it was about celebrities and how they adopt like six children and try to push them over with toys and presents... It kinda works. (I mean, the video had these stuffy old white wankers and these cute little black kids.)... Goodies for you if you manage to prove me right. :\

General Comment:This has the same meanings as bulletproof according to Elly. It's basically fighting back against being messed around.

General Comment:I love the 'broken roof' part, such a great metaphor for that feeling of limbo.... Halfway between the gutter and the stars...

And also the 'stubborn youth' metaphor. Love is like that - insistent and pushy and likely to throw a tantrum when denied - no matter how damaging to your heart that may be.

General Comment:To me, this song didn't strike me as a gay relationship, or a boyfriend-girlfriend thing, but the usual thing of being messed around. But maybe that's because it's similar to what I'm going through at the moment. That's what I love about La Roux, it's so easy to relate to everything she writes. So this is what I think:

Your love is like a stubborn youth
    That you'd rather just deny

The guy (we'll say it's a to make it easy, but obviously it could be a girl) will not ever say that he loves her or let himself love her. He probably doesn't want to love, likes to be free and single.

I'm walking on a broken roof
But I'm looking at the sky.

She's going through a lot of crap and confusion (the broken roof), which he's putting her through, and she knows it. Yet somehow, she still tries to fool herself that everything's great and will turn out alright (looking at the sky).

It's all false love and affection,
You don't want me, you just like the attention
Yes, it's all false love and affection,
You don't like me, you just want the attention.

All the love and affection that he shows her isn't really true, he probably does like her a bit, but not enough. All the love and affection he shows her isn't because he loves her or wants to be with her - just because she's another girl he fancies a bit and he likes the attention she gives him.

I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy
I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy.

He's messing her around, and she thinks to herself 'i'm not your toy' because that's the way he treats her - she doesn't want to be just his toy to play around with when + how he feels like it. And although she might want it to be, she knows their situation isn't a true girl-meets-boy story, because to him she doesn't really mean anything. She's angry and upset about it and is indignant that she won't be his toy anymore, even though she knows she probably will.

Your love hides in a smoky night,
I can never find the truth

He keeps everything mysterious and plays her hot and cold, so she never really knows the truth to how he feels about her.

Boy, your touches leave me mystified
I wish I could believe in you.

She loves his touches but they also leave her with mixed feelings - she doesn't know what he means by them, and she wants so much to believe in him, to believe that she's important to him and his feelings for her are deep, but she knows she can't.

It's all false love and affection,
You don't want me, you just like the attention
Yes, it's all false love and affection,
You don't like me, you just want the attention.

I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy
I'm not your toy; this isn't another girl-meets-boy.

Memory:You don't want me, you just like the attention
You don't like me, you just want the attention

This is exactly what I've realized a few times: I've had feelings for a guy and haven't hidden them, and the guy has been returning every glance etc. and basically making me think that he feels the same way about me. But then it turns out that he's not actually interested, he was just enjoying and encouraging the adorement he was getting. "All false love and affection."
