Lyrics for American Eulogy as interpreted by bfg1024

American Eulogy Lyrics
A. Mass Hysteria

Sing us the song of the century
That sings like an American eulogy
The dawn of my love and conspiracy
Of forgotten hope and the Class of 13
Tell me a story into that goodnight
Sing us a song for me

Hysteria
Mass hysteria
Mass hysteria
Mass hysteria

Red alert is the color of panic
Elevated to the point of static
Beating into the hearts of the fanatics
And the neighborhood's a loaded gun
Idle thought leads to full-throttle screaming
And the welfare is asphyxiating
Mass confusion is all the new rage
And it's creating a feeding ground
For the bottom feeders of hysteria

Mass hysteria
Mass hysteria
Mass hysteria

True sounds of maniacal laughter
And the deaf mute is misleading the choir
The punchline is a natural disaster
And it's sung by the unemployed
Fight fire with a riot
The class war is hanging on a wire
Because the martyr is a compulsive liar
When he said,
"It's just a bunch of niggers throwing gas into the hysteria"

Mass hysteria
Mass hysteria
Mass hysteria
Mass hysteria

There's a disturbance on the ocean side
They tapped into the reserve
The static response is so unclear now
Mayday this is not a test!
As the neighborhood burns, America is falling
Vigilantes warning you
Calling Christan and Gloria

B. Modern World

I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world

I'm the Class of 13
In the era of dissent
A hostage of the soul
On a strike to pay the rent
The last of the rebels
Without a common ground
I'm gonna light a fire
Into the underground

I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world

I am a nation
Without bureaucratic ties
Deny the allegation as it's written
Fuckin' lies!

I want to take a ride to the great divide
Beyond the "up to date"
And the neo-gentrified
The high definition for the low resident
Where the value of your mind
Is not held in contempt
I can hear the sound of
A beating heart
That bleeds beyond a system
That's falling apart
With money to burn
On a minimum wage
'Cause I don't give a shit
About the modern age

I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
I don't want to live in the modern world
Mass hysteria
I don't want to live in the modern world
Mass hysteria
I don't want to live in the modern world
Mass hysteria
I don't want to live in the modern world
Mass hysteria

"Mass Hysteria" sounds a bit like "Deadbeat Holiday" from Warning. Also... "Mass Hysteria" is a song by Social Distortion (different song all together of course)... and on the deluxe version they cover Social Distortion's "Another State of Mind." But, I'm pretty sure this is just a huge coincidence.

Also, on the deluxe version they cover Dylan, The Who, and Arthur Crudup.

The song has a level of apocalyptic flavor to it, especially with the "Modern World" section. Vocalwise, it kind of reminds me of Cyndi Lauper's "Hole In My Heart" and seems to indicate a major sense of emergency as if to describe a modern metropolis breaking out into riots and flames as the narrator describes the "Mass Hysteria" of the sh*t hitting the fan with the rioting (which is ironic given the utter lack of violent rioting/protesting against Bush II policies in the states during his presidency) and the notion of it summing up the whole point of the album as far as how f*cked up America is and how Neo-Cons, the Religious Right, and the senseless war in Iraq could explode in such a violent explosion, that it makes the narrator not want to live in "the modern world" if this is what "the modern world" is supposed to be.

The first part Mass Hysteria is talking about the falling of the American society as Anarchy takes its slow grasp around us. Then Part B. Modern World is just talking about how the modern world os to concerned about such petty bullshit and that He doesn't want a part of it.

"And the deaf mute is misleading the choir"

This line stands out to me as a reference to Bush. He is deaf in the sense that he didn't seem to have any clue what was going on. If you were deaf you would have no idea what was happening in a choir. And he's mute in the sense that he lacks the ability to communicate (Bush-isms). Misleading the choir is a reference to how he led America in a completely wrong direction.

This is just my interpretation of it though. Love the new album :D

This song speaks right to my heart. After listening to it on repeat for an hour, I began to cry. It tells me that there are people out there who understand how fucked up society is, and how the class of 13 (the upcoming generation, which includes me) is going to severely pay for the fuck ups of today's governments and people. Green Day's music really gives me hope that eventually, society will change, and that the internally flawed systems the world's nations operate by will finally be gotten rid of. We can make peace with the world, we just have to believe it can exist.

Well, this song kind of wraps up the album- earlier he talks about generations (my generation is zero, bastards of 1969, class of 13, basically past, present, and future), and he uses this song to express his disappointment in the modern age, that the modern world has screwed up every generation. It takes what 21st century breakdown originally set out- corruption in the past- and applies it to now. In the first part everything is falling apart- Mass hysteria. The world is in chaos and Christian and Gloria are running. In the second part he talks about the past, that beyond the "up-to-date" and the "neo-gentrified" there will be some kind of place where there's freedom. But we're all severely fucked up. And so are the other generations. "I can hear the sound of a beating heart/that bleeds beyond the system that is falling apart"= there is hope only outside the system. The last generation left everything messed up and didn't make the 21st century deadline. The only thing left is what's in the underground. But no one gives a shit about the modern age.

I wrote something a couple years ago for my Creative Writing class in college called "21st Century" and I had some lines that are like essentially the same thing as lines in this song, especially Modern World part. And the about a year and a half later Green Day releases ""21st Century"" Breakdown. and as they wrote it better than i did it's just an amazing coincedence that myself and Billie Joe and Green Day can write pretty much the same song just worded differently yet we've never met.
And then theres me in debt and Billie Joe just out the goin on tour which shows what a loser I am! =D haha

i think its about how people think that the world will end in 2012. they talk about the class of 13 because they will never get to graduate and see the world as they want to. the american eulogy is talking about the end of the world and how people think that it might come true.

Will Christian and Gloria love each other? Or hate each other? The world wants to know. Like sands through the hourglass . . .

This song sums up the modern age.

"It's just a bunch of niggers throwing gas into the hysteria"
this line refers to hurricane katrina, and how the government didn't give a fuck about it.
they just kind of wiped it off of the windscreen like a bug in the view of there road to global power.

Strangely enough i have noticed that on one has mentioned the striking similarity between 'modern age' and 'minority' . . . Which i think is a very timely repetition of sentiment

Just to substantiate . . . 'i don't want to live in the modern world' is alot like 'i wanna be the minority and i don't need your authority' . . . And 'i can here the sound of a beating heart . . . ' is similar to 'blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts . . . ' 'the last of the rebels without a common ground' and 'i pledge allegiance to the underworld . . . There of which i stand alone' . . .

At first I thought the "class of 13" referred to the 13 colonies, but then I noticed it in the "Modern World" section so now I'm not too sure about my first interpretation. Just thought I'd add that idea and see what others think.
