Desperate
But not hopeless
I feel so useless
In the murder city
Desperate
But not helpless
The clock strikes midnight
In the murder city

I'm wide awake
After the riot
This demonstration
Of our anguish
This empty laughter
Has no reason
Like a bottle
Of your favorite poison

We are the last call
And it's too pathetic

Desperate
But not hopeless
I feel so useless
In the murder city
Desperate
But not helpless
The clock strikes midnight
In the murder city

Christian's crying
In the bathroom
And I just want to
Bum a cigarette
We've come so far,
We've been so wasted
It's written
All over our faces

We are the last call
And it's too pathetic

Desperate
But not hopeless
I feel so useless
In the murder city
Desperate
But not helpless
The clock strikes midnight
In the murder city

Desperate
But not hopeless
I feel so useless
In the murder city
Desperate
But not helpless
The clock strikes midnight
In the.

My Interpretation:okay so i know for a fact (because green day has said this at one of their concerts) that the "murder city" is oakland, a town of riots and murders that they are both ashamed and proud of. could it be that it also represents modern america?
chiristian and gloria are the last call, they are desperate but not hopeless, they're really pathetic because they know they really don't stand a chance against against this american society. gloria is idealistic, while christian is nihilistic, but they are both basically fighting for the same thing.
some people say this is a concept album and others a rock opera, but from what i've heard from green day, 21st century breakdown is a little bit of both. this song is easily one of my favorites in the album, and it's the main fight of the story, approaching the climax. i could be completely wrong, but i've been thinking about this whole album since it came out 2 years ago.

(also, does anyone agree with me about gloria being whatsername grown up?)

General Comment:well Rett youre right but looking back at songs (almost all) from their first rock opera if you will, american idiot, you can see many anti-american references. take the song american idiot for example. The lyrics clearly states that "were not the ones meant to follow" meaning were not the generation to follow the generation before us from a political standpoint. and also in holiday (even though he says this song is not anti american its anti war) billie has lines in there like "i beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies" which is clearly referring to all the lies our generation has been told. The point is, the definition of anti-american can be different depending on what that person's personal preference is. But any way you interpret it, you can uncover hidden clues about green day's dislikes (using a nice word) of how america is run, and theres no question about it. Some songs are just harder to interpret, but they all come down to the same idea that has fueled green day's last two albums. thats not to say that green day isnt BY FAR the best rock band in the last 20 years.

General Comment:Greendayx13: fyi protesting and criticizing the government is the most American thing ever (not anti-American at all- see 1st Amendment and War of Independence): Green Day is very Pro-American. The are anti-idiot, anti-intolerence (except for idiots, and even for them they have compassion), anti-torture, anti-forcefeeding. They are America's modern day Clash and every American (and Oaklander) should be proud of them.

General Comment:this song is very meaningful, despite first impressions. after digging a little deeper and interpreting the lyrics, they seemed to really display some emotions. (Desperate, but not hopeless, i feel so useless in the murder city) to me means that although he feels that in the murder city (which posibly relates to his life) he feels so not-needed, but he hasnt yet reached total hopelessness. (im wide awake into the riot, this demonstration of our anguish. this empty laughter has no reason, like a bottle of your favorite poison) to me means that the "riots" (or, in relation to america, political debates such as healthcare) is a perfect example of our anguish. like a bottle of your favorite poison means although you are given options and you pick one, that doesnt necissarily mean that its the one you want, but rather the best one out of all your options.
(Christian's crying In the bathroom And I just want to Bum a cigarette We've come so far, We've been so wasted It's written all over our faces) means to me that their are people in America that are in very difficult situations, yet all we care about is ourselves and we dont concern ourselves with the less fortunate or those who need help. the second line of that stanze to me means that all the pain and hardships they have endured is clearly visible at fist glance. the reason i am making all these references to america is because simpe green day has a history of writing anti american songs

General Comment:As a guy from the Murder City (where Green Day is from) and as a guy who attended the concert where Billy Joe recounted the making of the song...
They wrote the song after the small but well deserving Oakland riots following the murder of a young black man shot by the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) white police officer, who was overreacting to a situation going down on News Years Day around midnight. BART is the underground-aboveground subway system that links Oakland and San Francisco. Oakland is the Murder City not because of this singular tragic event but because we experience approximately 100 murders a year. Oaklanders wear it like a badge of honor but we are also embarrassed by it at the same time. We are a hard city of rebellion and riot and yet we are a very peace loving, beautiful, pot-friendly, diverse city of acceptance. A huge percentage of our murders are gang on gang and civilians are typically left out unless a rare stray bullet finds its way into someone's body.... so its tolerated. We all get stressed and upset when some non-affiliated person gets it in Oakland. One thing to also know is that the Black Panthers originated in Oakland as an anti-establishment pro-black rights militant group that believed in arming themselves as a show of force against a very racict Oakland Police Force in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Although the Panthers did a lot of violent and criminal stuff, they also showed that an oppressed people were able to stand up and take on the man with fearless pride. Hell's Angeles also were headquartered and in some respects started in Oakland. I could not think of a better song to describe us Oaklanders. We are desperate but not hopeless. Dont f- with Oakland! We are sensitive, but we'll drop y'all.

General Comment:"Desperate but not hopeless"- they are in the Murder City and they are clinging onto a threadbare rebellion that's fueled by drugs and sometimes things happen that they can't control. But also it's about disconnection (possibly through drugs)- not caring that Christian's crying in the bathroom, wide awake after the riot, and empty laughter.

General Comment:I noticed alot of people are talking about how Gloria and Christian are "friends" or "lovers", but according to a somewhat recent interview with the band, the story is not a love story at all. In fact, Gloria is the protagonist of the story and is just trying to get through her life without being changed from a Punk Rock chick to whatever this century is trying to make people. She is holding on to her ideas and although she does believe in the corruption of the government and the conspiracies, instead of just bitching about it, she is doing something about it. Christian is the antagonist of the story. He is being changed quickly. He learns of the problems of our society, but just becomes angry at everyone an everything. The two characters are foils and are enemies. Gloria is the "Last of the American Girls" because of how she is willing to stand up for her ideals. Christian is the "Enemy" because he is the "Silence" of the generation, as mentioned in the song "Know Your Enemy".

This song in particular is the foil to "Last of the American Girls" because Gloria just got done being praised for her good deeds and strong voice, and Christian is being dogged for not voicing his opinion. His friend is standing outside, not feeling sorry for him because it is all Christian's fault for not doing anything. He is "Desperate" for a voice but can't find one. He can take care of himself, but nobody else.

General Comment:Actually the real meaning of this song was told by Green Day themselves in an interview with MSN (I saw it on YouTube) The guys were going to a bar to drink one night, and there was a teenager who had been handcuffed by the police for some reason then he was shot and killed. The guys got there right after this happenend. This is why in the song it says "I'm wide awake after the riot" because they got there right after the "riot" (not really a riot but the commotion at the bar) Billie wrote this song about the events that happened that night and he said this song sticks in his head more than any other on the new album.

General Comment:I believe the "clock strikes midnight" might mean the Armageddon clock or whatever it's called. the one that counts down to how close we are to nuclear war.
