Lightning strike
Inside my chest to keep me up at night
Dream of ways
To make you understand my pain

Clouds of sulfur in the air
Bombs are falling everywhere
It's heartbreak warfare
Once you want it to begin
No one really ever wins
In heartbreak warfare
If you want more love
Why don't you say so?
If you want more love
Why don't you say so?

Drop his name
Push it in and twist the knife again
Watch my face
As I pretend to feel no pain, pain, pain

Clouds of sulfur in the air
Bombs are falling everywhere
It's heartbreak warfare
Once you want it to begin
No one really ever wins
In heartbreak warfare
If you want more love
Why don't you say so?
If you want more love
Why don't you say so?
Just say so

How come the only way to know how high you get me
Is to see how far I fall?
God only knows how much I'd love you if you let me
But I can't break through at all
It's a heart, heartbreak

I don't care if we don't sleep at all tonight
Let's just fix this whole thing now
I swear to God we're gonna get it right
If you lay your weapon down
Red wine and Ambien
You're talking shit again
It's heartbreak warfare
Good to know it's all a game
Disappointment has a name
It's heartbreak, heartbreak

It's heartbreak warfare
It's heartbreak warfare
It's heartbreak warfare

Being a month into a break-up after a four year relationship gives you time to gain some perspective and I have to say this album is truly, truly a manual for a break up. I've been in the 3 a.m. fight, wanting it desperately to be fixed, wanting a resolution that will last longer than two days. Wanting the love to continue, finding any way to keep it going. You really feel like there are bombs going on around you and you can't think, you don't know which way to go for fear of getting shelled. "Heartbreak Warfare" nails it, just nails it.

Red wine and Ambien, You're talking shit again.

Been there. Thanks for the music.

I feel like I can really relate to this song at the moment. Was in a relationship, but due to several factors, we decided it was best to 'just be friends.' deep down, i don't think either of us are content with this circumstance, but neither of us are willing to speak up and try to make it work. it's become more of a game to see who can make the other more jealous...in some twisted attempt to see if the other still cares. he hurt me, so i try to think of things that will hurt him...like bringing another guy to an event. i hurt him, so he always brings up other girls to try and get a reaction out of me. i try to play it cool, but it still hurts like hell. and i can see how it affects him too. its obvious we both still care, but until someone speaks up and puts his/her heart on the line...we'll continue to play this game that makes no sense at all. we're hurting each other needlessly and no one will win this. heartbreak warfare.

the only way i can explain this song is by relating it to what im going through.....with that being said overall i think its about a relationship where both people pretended that they didnt like each other when in actuality they both really did. Something must have happened to make them admit there love for one another (she found another guy.) But instead of them wanting to move on and forget, they revert back to their stubborn habit of not admitting how they feel about one another. For the singer is afraid of getting hurt again, and the girl just doesnt want to look stupid since she already feels stupid for not seeing the connection. Thus making it literally a "heartbreak warfare" cause they are constantly attacking one another when in reality they want it to stop and start over. Just like in a war where no one wants to give in until they are defeated but in this case both people dont want to give into their feelings that is until they are defeated from the pain and hate that they have caused each other to feel.

Lighting strike Inside my chest to keep me up at night Dream of ways To make you understand my pain (the singer finds out about the girl and her new boy)

Clouds of sulfur in the air Bombs are falling everywhere It's heartbreak warfare

Once you want it to begin
    No one really ever wins
    In heartbreak warfare

If you want more love Why don't you say so If you want more love Why don't you say so (the singer is telling the girl that if she wanted love then why didnt you tell me, instead of looking for another guy)

Drop his name Push it in and twist the knife again Watch my face As I pretend to feel no pain (accidently or purposely the girl says the name of the guy she left the singer for, this starts the war)

Clouds of sulfur in the air Bombs are falling everywhere It's heartbreak warfare

Once you want it to begin No one really ever wins (start the relationship again, but there is still that mistrust and miscommunication) In heartbreak warfare

If you want more love Why don't you say so If you want more love Why don't you say so Just say so

How come the only way to know how high you get me
Is to see how far I fall (they are both testing each others love by putting each other down)
God only knows how much I'd love you if you'd let me
But I can't break free at all (the singer is willing to work things out but he cant when she still has her defenses up)

I don't care if we don't sleep at all tonight Let's just just fix this whole thing now I swear to God we're going to get it right
If you put your weapon down (singer finally admits his feelings, if only she would stop and listen)

Red wine and Ambien You're talking shit again (instead failure) It's heartbreak warfare

Good to know it's all a game Disappointment has a name (singer finds out that there is really no use since the girl is continuously messing around with his heart even when he finally gave up and told her what she wanted to hear.)

It's heartbreak warfare. and it sucks.

I love how "If you want more love / Why don't you say so" contrasts against his earlier song "Your Body is a Wonderland", which has the lyric "If you want love / we'll make it".

I feel like this was probably purposeful and shows that he's gotten a little more mature/cynical/raw about love in the past decade or so.

I dated a boy for a while. We were madly in love. Then, very suddenly, I decided I no longer shared feelings for him. He was in love, and he was sensitive and sweet and didn't deserve me. I realize now I wish I had't handled things the way I did. A while after our break-up, this song came out, and I immeidiatly fell in love with it. A true John Mayer fan, I grew up with him, and My first concert was his battle Studies, which opened with Heartbreak Warfare. Anyways, I realized, the first time I listened to this song, I was the one hurting John. I was the bitch with the weapon, who won't give up, who craves that constant drama. It really hurt, and if I had anything to say to that boy now, It would be I wish I had put the weapon down, because I regret it deeply, and will for the rest of my life.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation.
