Heartbreak Warfare Lyrics
Lighting strike
inside my chest to keep me up at night Dream of ways to make you understand my pain Clouds of sulfur in the air Bombs are falling everywhere It's heartbreak warfare Once you want it to begin No one really ever wins In heartbreak warfare If you want more love why don't you say so If you want more love why don't you say so Drop his name Push it in and twist the knife again Watch my face As I pretend to feel no pain Clouds of sulfur in the air Bombs are falling everywhere It's heartbreak warfare Once you want it to begin No one really ever wins In heartbeak warfare If you want more love Why don't you say so If you want more love Why don't you say so Just say so How come the only way to know how high you get me Is to see how far I fall God only knows how much I'd love you if you'd let me But I can't break free at all It's heart, heartbreak I don't care if we don't sleep at all tonight Let's just just fix this whole thing now I swear to God we're going to get it right If you put your weapon down Red wine and ambien you're talking shit again. It's heartbreak warfare Good to know it's all a game Disappointment has a name: it's heartbreak warfare

The inspiration and meaning of the song (atleast the way I see it) is pretty straight forward. Its about his relationship with Jen Aniston. The line: "Drop his name, push it in and twist the knife again" is about Brad Pitt. Jen and Brad's was still always being talked about in the Media, I'm sure that was hard for John to deal with. And Jen has been quoted saying that she isn't over Brad. But I love the passion and the openess John can show his fans. The idea of was war of love, with bombs on a battle field is poetic. To me, this is kinda the equivalent to Slow Dancing in a Burning Room from Continuum.
Mistake with the above lyrics- "Red wine and ambien" is what he says from what I heard on the news.

It's about the absurdity of love and relationships in general. How they are so complex, and how they fall apart so easily. John Mayer muses over a simple solution. "If you want more love, why don't you say so?" I'm pretty sure that similar lyrics have appeared in "Only Heart" from Heavier Things,
I love the lines "How come the only way to see how high you get me, is to see how far I fall?" It's like, you can never really know how much a person affects you . . . Or you don't feel like your changing (or growing) when you're with somebody, until you're no longer with that person and you realise just how much has changed.
I'm sure there are more themes evident, I can't fully get my head around some of the verses (which is the beauty of overly simplistic and vague lyrics). But this is the overall feeling I'm getting from the song.
Mistake with the lyrics: In the final version of the song, the above lyrics "i can't break free at all" sound more like "i can't get through at/it all".

Let's just just fix this whole thing now
I swear to God we're going to get it right

Red wine and Ambien,
You're talking shit again.
Been there. Thanks for the music.
