Well I'm happy that I'll be the first to comment on this song. He debuted this song acoustically on the Mayercraft Carrier 2. It's on the new album, Battle Studies.
The inspiration and meaning of the song (atleast the way I see it) is pretty straight forward. Its about his relationship with Jen Aniston. The line: "Drop his name, push it in and twist the knife again" is about Brad Pitt. Jen and Brad's was still always being talked about in the Media, I'm sure that was hard for John to deal with. And Jen has been quoted saying that she isn't over Brad. But I love the passion and the openess John can show his fans. The idea of was war of love, with bombs on a battle field is poetic. To me, this is kinda the equivalent to Slow Dancing in a Burning Room from Continuum.
Mistake with the above lyrics- "Red wine and ambien" is what he says from what I heard on the news.

While this site is mainly employed to comment on the lyrics and their meaning of a song (in a nutshell, speculation of "Heartbreak Warfare" points to the most likely reading that this song centers around his on and off relationship with Jennifer Aniston. this song also acts as a metaphor between love and war that this album's concept is based on) I'd like to examine the production of the song. Back in April, John posted a Passion Pit song, "Moth's Wings," on his blog and pointed to the strengths of the sound of that song. I believe John is taking cues from production of this sort (and others such as Grizzly Bear, MGMT, and Mayer Hawthorne just to name a few) that has been highly successful as of late. While other songs fit the more '80s classic Tom Petty / Fleetwood Mac sound he claims the album emulates, this song's strengths lie in this techno-y sound that still has a somewhat gritty feel to it. Love it.

Also - the guitar rifts are awesome, will make for an awesome, powerful live performance.

I love this song, unique style of songwriting, realy love this song,lately i've been in love with a girl but she went with another guy and denied all the things she said and done to me and her denial realy disappointes me, and now i wish i could look her in the eyes and tell her that "No one really ever wins In heartbreak warfare" remembering her denying just kills me!! this song just fits my life and thats why i love John's songs! most of them exactly fit my life.

John Mayer never seizes to display his artistic genius album after album. this is a beautiful song. Heartbreak warfare plays with two themes, love and war. Its like the war that lovers go through in a relationship, the war that goes on inside. Here he's telling his lover to put down her ammo and just make up. He wants the relationship to work and has expressed how deep his love for her is. This is a great song, the whole Battle studies album is great!!!

Being a month into a break-up after a four year relationship gives you time to gain some perspective and I have to say this album is truly, truly a manual for a break up. I've been in the 3 a.m. fight, wanting it desperately to be fixed, wanting a resolution that will last longer than two days. Wanting the love to continue, finding any way to keep it going. You really feel like there are bombs going on around you and you can't think, you don't know which way to go for fear of getting shelled. "Heartbreak Warfare" nails it, just nails it.

Red wine and Ambien,
You're talking shit again.
