Song Meaning:Am I the only one who thinks this song (along with the obvious spiritual themes) is in reference to alcohol and alcoholism? It seems like the entire chorus is saying that Andy needs to pretend that he never needed alcohol (maybe at confession...?) He clearly states "the bottle's gonna bury us anyway, but I'm doing what I gotta to stay awake". In other words, he knows that alcohol is going to kill him eventually but what's one more in the long run?

General Comment:I think he is talking about how growing up people shoved religion down his throat and doesn't believe anymore. He "doesn't even need it anyways." And when he says he's doing what he can to stay awake, I think he is saying he is living his life as he wants and making the best of it.

General Comment:I think he is talking about how hypocritical people are. By saying "make it seem like you never really needed it" he is saying that people are ridiculous because they try to cover up their need for salvation. I feel that he is trying to say that people just need to live and have fun and not worry "make it seem" like they never needed any help in getting to heaven. Maybe he is saying that the whole purpose of God was to save us because we couldn't do it ourselves and therefore its absolutely stupid to try and create an appearance that we didn't need God's grace. As far as the "doin what i gotta to stay awake" he could be referring to staying alive or he could be referring to his spiritual life like hes doing just what he feels he has to to get into heaven. I think he's trying to say that God gave us grace for a reason so we should accept that and not make such a fuss about looking perfect or whatever because whether you appear perfect or you screwed up and did the bare minimum you are gonna get to the same place. I don't know thats just what I get out of it. More of a laugh at the hypocrisy of the people in church than totally denying God in full.

My Interpretation:i think that the people try to make him believe in Jesus and the second coming. he believe people, maybe himself, "act" like they are good people just to get into a great afterlife.
    sad really...
then he goes on to say "Jesus don't come round Unless we pray for 500 days" hes saying that there is all kinds of rules and practices that we have to do to get Jesus to come around, but that confuses him
"I don't know what you want anymore"
so then he says fuckit all and just lives to keep himself alive and happy.
"That the bottom going to bury us anyway So I am doing what I gotta to stay awake"
i sense no religious views or an "inevitable" coming of Jesus.
its a lack of concern for it.
    i could be wrong. :P

    General Comment:I agree with AllChokedUp
The black man= a black preacher trying to shove his beliefs down his throat. but its stuck in his teeth.
Preachers stress Jesus is coming, and so we try to "clean everything" and look like good people. like when family visits..

General Comment:surprised no one thought of the meaning of the song yet, obviously it relates to a second coming of jesus and that it seems inevitable.

General Comment:Is it just me or do i sense a hint of nirvana in this album? I suppose you could say that for a lot of today's bands but still. I love Manchester Orchestra.
