So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I'm so glad these lyrics are here! They do actually say "Pow!" only once about halfway through. If you've ever wondered why the Beasties did so much instrumental stuff like this when they could have done another song like So What'cha Want, I say give this track another chance. Check out the drums! "Pow!" is one of my favorites on Check Your Head. Whenever I hear it while driving I have to watch my speed! This is a great place to start if you wanna become more familiar with their funky, jazzy, instrumental stuff. There is more of this on Ill Communication & Hello Nasty. Later on, in 2007, they put out an entire album of this type of stuff called The Mix-Up, which is just as funky & brilliant as any other album they made.
