So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Can you stay up for the weekend
And blame God for looking too old?
Can we find all that you stand for
Has been replaced with mountains of gold?
You cannot dream yourself to notice
To feel pain and swallow fear
But can you stay up for the weekend
'Til next year?
God, I can't do this any more
Though I'll be laid down on the floor
As many feet walk through the door
I'm not alone
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone?
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone? No
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone?
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone? No
And blame God for looking too old?
Can we find all that you stand for
Has been replaced with mountains of gold?
You cannot dream yourself to notice
To feel pain and swallow fear
But can you stay up for the weekend
'Til next year?
God, I can't do this any more
Though I'll be laid down on the floor
As many feet walk through the door
I'm not alone
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone?
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone? No
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone?
If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone? No

For those that are interested, here's my interpretation of deadmau5's mix:
"I can't do this, God I can't do this anymore" (repeated over and over) From what I've gathered in my years of listening to deadmau5, he suffers from depression and anxiety. Yes, this song mix is from 2009 and he announced his symptoms in 2012, but it's something that's no doubt affected him throughout his life.
"Can you stay up for the weekend And blame God for looking too old" Going off the original Calvin Harris lyric interpretations on the page, parties and going to clubs often is taxing on DJs such as deadmau5.
"Can you find all that you stand for Has been replaced with mountains of gold" Put simply, dreams and aspirations have just turned into money and money alone.
"You cannot dream yourself to notice/ can't untrain yourself to notice" To feel pain and swallow fear" Based on the context, the second lyric listed is probably correct, but I'm not completely sure on which is the actual lyric. I've seen it both ways. But, once you notice that you're not having as much fun and you notice yourself getting older, you can't un-notice.
"But can you stay up for the weekend For/til next year" In deadmau5's case, can you keep DJ-ing and partying? The clubbers are unaware of everything that he's going through and don't realize yet that they too are getting older love his music and keep egging him on for more, even though deadmau5 gets tired of it, it seems (also explains deadmau5's short absences from making music, doesn't it? It gets to him.)
"God I can't do this anymore..." (slow, before beat kicks back in) For effect, it's like he's pondering what to do.
"I can't do this, God I can't do this anymore" (repeated over and over again) He obliges to the fans and continues on, but with the thoughts still in his mind.
"Can you stay up for the weekend?" (replaces the "I can't do this in terms of the repetition) It's funny how he ends the song with this lyrically, it's like he switches to how the fans are egging him on for more and more, as if it's constant and overwhelming him. The music then gets really soft again like he's thinking about what he should do.
Really, when put into deadmau5's point of view, the lyrics and music both reflect his personal thoughts amazingly. It's genius really.
Lastly the title, "I'm Not Alone" is true because with his depression, he knows there has to be other DJs out there like him, Calvin Harris being one, thus the reason for remixing it.
