Can you stay up for the weekend
And blame God for looking too old?
Can we find all that you stand for
Has been replaced with mountains of gold?

You cannot dream yourself to notice
To feel pain and swallow fear
But can you stay up for the weekend
'Til next year?

God, I can't do this any more
Though I'll be laid down on the floor
As many feet walk through the door
I'm not alone

If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone?

If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone? No

If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone?

If I see a light flashing
Could this mean that I'm coming home?
If I see a man waving
Does this mean that I'm not alone? No

"Can you stay up for the weekend and blame god for looking too old"

I think Calvin Harris is asking himself this. He wonders why he keeps looking older, but he can't really blame anyone but himself, since he probably brought it on himself by staying awake weekends because of partying.

"Can you find all that you stand for has been replaced with mountains of gold"

I think he finds that he used to care about a lot of things, but now only care about money and stupid superficial stuff?

"You can untrain yourself to notice (I believe these are the correct lyrics) to feel pain and swallow fear"

You can learn your self to not-notice, by looking the other way, that you have been going on the wrong path. You can feel the pain, and swallow the fear of losing your dreams, and intoxicating your body by partying too much.

"But can you stay up for the weekend for next year"

How long can he handle this rockstar life of partying, can he keep doing this next year? and what about the year after that?

"God i can't do this any more though ill be laid down on the floor as many feet walk through the door I'm not alone"

He can't keep on living this life, because then he will break down at some point. But if he breaks down, everyone else, especially the younger people, will continue living these lives.

"If i see a light flashing could this mean that I'm coming home if i see a man waving does this mean that I'm not alone"

Here he is describing clubs: Lights, "waving" people. But he still wonder if he will continue doing this, and if other people feel the same.

This is my opinion, but I can't really figure this song out XD.

Been partying, touring, promoting, performing so much it's finally taking its toll.

"I'm not alone." But maybe he is.

This song is about going clubbing. The lyrical content along with the contrasting shades of melancholy and euphoria in the sound tells us of his thoughts during one sobering moment in the middle of a dancefloor. The song only has one verse over a sombre guitar riff which is then replaced with mid 90's inspired anthemic synthesizer work.

It's like he's standing there in a packed out club and all of a sudden he takes a look around and gives himself a poor assessment of the situation. He questions himself and expresses doubts over whether he wants to be there anymore. Kind of like a 'What the fuck am I doing? I'm getting too old for this shit' moment. Then the euphoric rave bit kicks in and all doubt is washed away and the melancholy lyrics from the verse are not revisited. Instead a chorus is repeated which explains why he loves it. The flashing lights of the club/dancefloor is his home. The man waving are his mates out to enjoy the night with him.

There is a chorus that is repeated through the song but it serves as a re-enforcement to

Thoughts that may have inspired the lyrics.

"Can you stay up for the weekend and blame god for looking too old?"

    • Whoa man im wasted im gonna feel and look like shit tomorrow!

"Can find all that you stand for has been replaced with mountains of gold?"

    • I cant keep going like this partying with my mates all the time. I got bills to pay and I gotta go to work

"you can un-train yourself to notice to feel pain and swallow fear"

    • Everybody in here is so much younger than me. When am I going to get my act together and do something with my life? Ive been doing this for a while now and I know its fucking me up but I've managed to get by so far.

"But can you stay up for the weekend for next year?"

    • If I keep going like this I'm going to crash

God I can't do this any more though ill be laid down on the floor as many feet walk through the door

    I'm not alone

    • I know I cant keep doing this and I'm kinda over going out every weekend drinking and dancing and with so many people in here I cant be the only one thinking like this.

    [Uplifting rave bit]

    • Fuck it, this is why I'm here, I fucking love this place!!

"If i see a light flashing could this mean that I'm coming home?"

    • The lighting in here is tripping me out, this club is awesome! Oi! Go get me another drink! I love it here!

"If i see a man waving does this mean that I'm not alone?"

    • Hey theres Johnny and Matt! Boys how are ya!? Long time no see bro! Danny boy! Whats going on mate? The whole crew is here! Thought I was by myself for a second! Lets go chat to those girls over there!

    My Interpretation

For those that are interested, here's my interpretation of deadmau5's mix:

"I can't do this, God I can't do this anymore" (repeated over and over) From what I've gathered in my years of listening to deadmau5, he suffers from depression and anxiety. Yes, this song mix is from 2009 and he announced his symptoms in 2012, but it's something that's no doubt affected him throughout his life.

"Can you stay up for the weekend And blame God for looking too old" Going off the original Calvin Harris lyric interpretations on the page, parties and going to clubs often is taxing on DJs such as deadmau5.

"Can you find all that you stand for Has been replaced with mountains of gold" Put simply, dreams and aspirations have just turned into money and money alone.

"You cannot dream yourself to notice/ can't untrain yourself to notice" To feel pain and swallow fear" Based on the context, the second lyric listed is probably correct, but I'm not completely sure on which is the actual lyric. I've seen it both ways. But, once you notice that you're not having as much fun and you notice yourself getting older, you can't un-notice.

"But can you stay up for the weekend For/til next year" In deadmau5's case, can you keep DJ-ing and partying? The clubbers are unaware of everything that he's going through and don't realize yet that they too are getting older love his music and keep egging him on for more, even though deadmau5 gets tired of it, it seems (also explains deadmau5's short absences from making music, doesn't it? It gets to him.)

"God I can't do this anymore..." (slow, before beat kicks back in) For effect, it's like he's pondering what to do.

"I can't do this, God I can't do this anymore" (repeated over and over again) He obliges to the fans and continues on, but with the thoughts still in his mind.

"Can you stay up for the weekend?" (replaces the "I can't do this in terms of the repetition) It's funny how he ends the song with this lyrically, it's like he switches to how the fans are egging him on for more and more, as if it's constant and overwhelming him. The music then gets really soft again like he's thinking about what he should do.

Really, when put into deadmau5's point of view, the lyrics and music both reflect his personal thoughts amazingly. It's genius really.

Lastly the title, "I'm Not Alone" is true because with his depression, he knows there has to be other DJs out there like him, Calvin Harris being one, thus the reason for remixing it.

I think it's "You can untrain yorself to notice," rather than dream. Very good song though, different and probably better than anything off I Created Disco. I like when his accent breaks through and he says "moontains".

    choooooooon!!

maybe about being out on the road touring and travelling, not in one place for vry often and so hes perpetually alone. And the lights flashing and men waving might make him feel not lonely for a while but its fleeting. I dunno really just my 2 cents!

it's an amazing dance song, but it.. kinda sounds like Calvin is telling himself that though these people walk in and out of his life fleetingly, he's not proper alone. the first verse sounds like stuff people say to each other when they're drunk to me, anyway. ha! x

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
