Lyrics for Stolen Houses (Die) as interpreted by organic joes

Stolen Houses (Die) Lyrics
Though our father's fathers slept in stolen houses
All that's over now
And our babies never cry
And we can look you in the eye
And say we're not afraid to die

And yes our mother's mothers saw in black and white
But all that's over now
And our children never lie
And no matter how we try
We are not afraid to die

Amazing tune. Wish it were 3 minutes longer! Anyways...

I think this song is a contrast between generations, especially in the South, where Sam grew up.

"our father's fathers slept in stolen houses" i think refers to the expansion of the United States, one could argue that much of this countries territory was stolen from someone or another...

"And yes our mother's mothers saw in black and white" i believe refers to an earlier generation of socially acceptable racism.

the "babies never cry" and "children never lie" lines i believe to be a bit of sarcasm, as i'm not so sure being "not afraid to die" is a good thing. i think maybe he's speaking about a younger generation that feels it can do no wrong and has lost it's fear of death and God.

At any rate it is a beauty. You can get it now on the Red Hot compilation Dark Was The Night.

peace.

I wish this was longer too. I feel like there's more to say--but then again, Sam usually gets his political views out in most of his songs. Beautiful. Love it. Dark Was The Night was an brilliant compilation (at least the first CD was-the 2nd was so so).
