Lyrics for Zero as interpreted by 4barbela

Zero Lyrics
Shake it like a ladder to the sun
Makes me feel like a madman on the run
Find me, never, never far gone
So get your leather, leather, leather on, on, on, on

Your zero
What's your name?
No one's going to ask you
Better find out where they want you to go

Try and hit the spot
Get to know it in the dark
Get to know it whether you're
Crying, crying, crying, oh, oh
Can you climb, climb, climb higher?

Shake it like a ladder to the sun
Makes me feel like a madman on the run
No you're never, never far gone
So get your leather, leather, leather on, on, on, on

Your zero
What's your name?
No one's going to ask you
Better find out where they want you to go

Try and hit the spot
Get to know it in the dark
Get to know it whether you're
Crying, crying, crying, oh, oh
Can you climb, climb, climb higher?

Was it the cure?
Shellshock!
Was it the cure?
Hope not!
Was it the cure?
Shellshock!
Was it the cure?
What's your name?

Your zero
What's your name?
No one's going to ask you
Better find out where they want you to go

Try and hit the spot
Get to know it in the dark
Get to know it whether you're
Crying, crying, crying, oh, oh
Can you climb, climb, climb higher?

Was it the cure?
Shellshock!
Was it the cure?
Hope not!
Was it the cure?
Shellshock!
Was it the cure?
Hope not!

What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?

it's about japanese kamakazi fighters. they were called zeros.

Shake it like a ladder to the sun
(describes sensation of flight)
Makes me feel like a madman on the run
(kamakazis are crazy and are being chased by u.s. plane and ground defenses)
Find me, never, never far gone
(cause i'm about to smash into a target)
So get your leather, leather, leather on, on, on, on
(leather flight outfit)

Your zero
What's your name?
No one's going to ask you
Better find out where they want you to go
(that's all pretty self explanatory- no one cares who you are and here is your target.)

Try and hit the spot
(hello?!)
Get to know it in the dark
Get to know it whether you're
Crying, crying, crying, oh, oh
(bing bong! thank you!)
Can you climb, climb, climb higher?
(instead of crashing into stuff and blowing people up can you please rise above that?)

Was it the cure?
Shellshock!
Was it the cure?
Hope not!
Was it the cure?
Shellshock!
Was it the cure?
What's your name?
(is smashing into things with a plane or running into a crowd with a bomb the cure to anything?)

What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?
What's your name?

First of all, I think it's 'shaking' not 'shake it'--you wouldn't have to shake a ladder to the sun, it would already be shaking quite a bit, so it wouldn't make sense to give a directive to someone 'to shake' something that would already be in that state.

Also, I think it's crime and not crying. (Also it's a bitch to type in this reply box.)

I think it's def about sex, though not specifically prostitution. I think it's just a contrived random sex, like a sex club...hit the spot, could be not just the place to go to meet someone for sex, but then also hitting the spot in bed. It seems this song is sung to a man, who is probably pretty conservative, and is trying to climb the ladder (to the sun).

that fits in with the ending lyrics...was it the cure? Shellshocked/hope not. It could have been a very shocking experience for the subject who is hoping that that experience isn't the cure because it's too shellshocking.

I think this song my be about trying to make it in a rock band even when people think that you are a zero. That even when other people may think that you are nothing you need to get your lether on and rock anyway.

I interpreted it as a woman probably Karen O giving advice to a friend telling her (or him) that she needs to put themselves out there and "get [their] leather on" in order to stand out from the crowd, like Karen does.

This song is about Japanese Kamikaze fighters. They flew Mitsubishi Zeros. They wore leather jackets. Their identities were inconsequential, as they had one mission. There target was their one prerogative, and failure was not an option.

Hmm, I think saying this song is about sex or prostitution is a bit of a stretch. I feel like the music and tone would be much different if that were the case, and there would probably be a lot more sexier lyrics (come on, when artists write sex songs they can't help but use a bunch of cheesy innuendo).

My interpretation is based a lot on the video, but I think this song is about Karen (or any star) psyching herself up for a performance, maybe on the road.

"You're zero" - could refer to how impersonal a rock "star" gets treated by the venue staff, or maybe she means zero as in Ground Zero, or maybe this is her reminding herself she's really not that special a star after all to keep herself humble, or maybe all 3!

"What's your name, no one's gonna ask you better find out where they want you to go" - the staff directing her to her spot on stage before the performance, not caring what her name is, just treating her like a product

"Try and hit the spot
Get to know it in the dark" - she's trying to learn her stage mark in the dark (when you perform on stage they usually put marks down to help you remember where to stand, but you have to go find them in the dark when the lights are down before the performance begins)

"Get to know it whether you're
Crying, crying, crying, of love
Can you climb, climb, climb higher?" - you have to perform even if you're lovesick, and climbing higher refers to her escalating her performance and always striving to be better

Well, that's what I think so far! I'd sure like to see an interview with Karen (I assume she wrote the lyrics?) about this song...

There's not a line in this song that isn't about female masturbation!

Shaking (your right hand) like a ladder to the sun(reaching a climax)
Makes me feel like a mad man on the run (elated, crazy)

Hit the spot (please don't make me explain...) get to know it in the dark
Whether your crying... (getting off makes you feel btter when your blue)
Climbing... (climbing toward climax)

And finally, Zero (0) is similar to the shape of a vagina.

Gotta Love karen O

To me, this is a young woman seducing a not-very-socially-adept young man (or girl, but I pick man for the "leather on" line).

Shellshock - was it the cure?
Hope not!

She rocks his world. Is he now socially adept? Hope not! She gets to keep him (no mention of for how long).

Watch the music video. It is about a song for the "losers" who consider themselves zeroes. and she is saying, yes you will stay a zero unless you make a name for yourself.

"Your a zero
What's your name?
No one's going to ask you
Better find out where they want you to go"

No body cares about you, therefore they do not need to know your name. It is how (some of the) famous people treat the everyday person (losers)

I love it that it's about losers and the first choruses say
"What's your name?
No one's going to ask you"

and then the ending still ends up asking WHAT'S YOUR NAME WHAT'S YOUR NAME WHAT'S YOUR NAME ?? !! Like they're not such losers anyway and someone still ends up frantically asking your name.

But only after you've got your leather on :))))):)(

i really like all the ideas about the prostitution and being a social outcast

my initial idea was that "zero" is like a size, like clothing size zero in america. and i thought that it is about someone who is appearance obsessed and has no real individual identity except trying to make it to the top, socially. No one cares about what they name is, or there opinon just that they look good. also the leather parts i think are not necessarily about s&m but the idea of leather as some sort of sexy outfit and protection to hid your true self in.

So in conclusion it is about some thin floozy, no one cares about her really just that she looks good. and she puts on her "sized zero outfits" (the leather part) for appeal and protection.

darn it i forgot the "was it the cure" "shell shock" parts...

well the cure could be, has she made the right decision just being all about appearances. and the shell shock is the realisation that she is a no one, and no one cares for her real name. and then she hopes that she is still in a world where her lifestyle seems right and a good decision

I think i am the only person in this world who thinks it is

"Shake it, like a LIGHTER to the sun" as in to check for liquid gas in your lighter,... you know how people do that lol... then that links onto the "mad man on the run" because cigarettes can give you an overwhelming feeling , or just the whole obsession with fire or whatever.
or it doesnt have to relate to either of those things. but yes i think its about a prostitute.
but im beginning to agree, its LADDER..
but then why would you shake a LADDER TO THE SUN? lol....

I think "blahblahblah" is right. The song is talking about kamikaze fighters, who flew airplanes called "Zeros", wore leather flight jackets, and whose names were lost in history.

Look at the lyrics:

"like a ladder to the sun" - allusion to Rising Sun
"find out where they want you to go" - referring to the destination of a suicide mission
"try and hit the spot" - obvious, hit the intended target
"climb, climb, climb higher" - plane ascending before dive-bomb impact
"was it the cure? shellshock!" - shellshock obviously a reference to wartime, "was it the cure" probably meaning that such suicide missions didn't win the war for the Japanese and only caused thousands of meaningless deaths

I'm pretty convinced the song is about trying to be famous and make it as a musician.
Your a zero. No one gives a shit about you, they don't care who you are, so you have to make a hit in the hopes of climbing higher.

I think this song is about a woman who feels that she has to perform for a man/men sexualy to get any attention out of them. "You're a zero" like, the men don't actually care about anything but her sexuality. But at the same time she enjoys the chaos that it creates, while still remaining "never far gone" from her weakness.

i think it's just about a fuckin' social reject.
no one wants to know your name i've felt that way before.
the song seems to speak to me in that matter.
