Have you ever wondered about our old nu-metal friends and what became of them?
Turns out I saw them a couple of days ago,
They were laughing and drinking and smoking and singing.

C’mon, can you count all the notches in your belt?
I'd rather not, let's just say I'm starving myself.

Baby, put your name down on a piece of paper,
I don’t want no savior baby, I just wanna have a good time

Oh, oh, At least I’m not as sad as I used to be.

And they said,
"Hey Nate, yeah, it’s been a while,
Are you gonna sing?"
And I began to smile and I said,
"You should’ve seen me a couple of years ago,
I was laughing and drinking and smoking and singing."

C’mon can you count all the loves that didn’t last?
It’s such a gas when you bring up the past.

Baby, put your name down on a piece of paper.
I don’t want no savior baby
I just wanna get it out.

Oh oh, oh, At least I’m not as sad as I used to be.
Oh oh, oh, At least I’m not as sad as I used to be.
At least I’m not as sad as I used to be.

And they say we would’ve seen you two years ago
Had you stuck around or come out to a show,
But youth’s taken over by rock and roll,
While we were laughing and drinking and smoking and singing....

So I left, That is it. That’s my life, Nothing is sacred.
I don’t keep friends,I keep acquainted,
I’m not a prophet, But I’m here to profit.

That’s all, I’m gone! That’s my life, Nothing is sacred.
I don’t fall in love, I just fake it.
I don’t fall in love. I don’t fall in love.

General Comment:I'm not ready to disregard that he's using sad as the opposite of happy, but i also think that he's saying "at least i'm not as sad as i used to be" as "at least i'm not as pathetic as i used to be."
i think it's him running into old friends and they're partying and having a good time, etc. and he realizes that that's not his life anymore - that he used to do that, but he's grown up. and when he gets down and thinks that his life is going no where, he remembers how he used to be and he's not as pathetic as he was then.
and when he says "that's my life, nothing is sacred" he's sort of saying that he doesn't think he's better than his old friends per say, but he acknowledges his change.

My Interpretation:I feel like this song is about a guy talking to a very good friend, or his conscience (usually the same thing, right?). And when he starts bringing up the past, she (it) brings up the parts he doesn't want to think about. "It’s such a gas when you bring up the past."

When he starts to ponder what ever happened to his old friends, he's reminded of what happened to him, apparently a long string of encounters. Hence the "C'mon can you count, all the notches in your belt?" to which he replies "I'd rather not, let's just say I'm starving myself", implying he's definitely gotten around.

And as he recounts when he ran into his old friends the other day, and they ask him about joining them, it's at that point he recalls a time he was truly happy. This was most likely when he was in a relationship with somebody. Because following that, he's reminded of all the times it never worked out between him and another. Which probably prompted him to engage in all the less than committed relationships he mentioned earlier, all the while repeating the mantra that he's happier now.

And every time it says "Baby, put your name down on a piece of paper" it might be referring to a girl asking for his number, to which he replies "I don’t want no savior baby, I just wanna have a good time", letting her know his intentions.

And so his old friends tell him that if he hadn't gotten caught up in everything else, and had actually been around to support them and hang out, they would have come to hang out with and supported him. And it's at this point he just ups and leaves. Obviously called on his error, or maybe reminded of the heartbreaking event he doesn't want to deal with, that prevented him from hanging out with them at the time.

And it snaps back to the present, with him sulking in what he's become. Repeatedly telling himself that this is the way things are, that it's not going to change, and that's how he lives now. Friendless and loveless, just moving from one fix to the next. Almost wallowing in self-pity with the realization that it really could be different, but that he doesn't feel strong enough to change it.

At least, that's my take on it.

General Comment:This is my favorite song on the album. Partying it up is fun and an easy way to go about life but Nate has moved onto bigger and better things with his music career and new life. He's doing something meaningful with his life that provides a different, but more profound happiness than his old lifestyle. He'll always remember his old friends and miss it to some degree, but he's come to terms with his new path.

The pace change at this point in the song is epic

    So I left,
    That is it.
    That’s my life,
    Nothing is sacred
(I really like this line, basically means that nothing in life is so sacred that moving onto a new phase would never be worth it)

    I’m not a prophet,
    But I’m here to profit.
(This part of the song always gives me chills. He doesn't know what his future will hold, but he's going to live his life by aiming for happiness and "profiting" from whatever situation he ends up in)

The last few lines can be interpreted in a number of ways, but i think ill keep my own interpretation to myself since I just went on a huge rant lol.

General Comment:I think when it says "baby, put your name down on a piece of paper" it may have something to do with an autograph? Since parts of the song seem to be him reflecting on when he was in The Format.

General Comment:Love this song. I think it's the best on the album. To me the song is about a musician who sells out to the mainstream and left behind the other musicians and bands he came up with. He runs into them one day and tries to say he's happier now, but is lying cuz he can see how happy everyone else is laughing and singing. He sold out and realizes it by the end

These last few verses are some of the most amazing ever sung. I can completely relate to these lyrics. It's really what a lot of people wish they could say but can't. "I don't fall in love, I just fake it". Mindblowing.

--I'd like to think this is Nate referring to his old band, The Format. It just all kind of makes sense.
