I used to think this was about a shaky relationship but the line "thousands were lost maybe more" makes it seem like they're talking about some kind of disaster. One that causes people to feel afraid and uncertain. Still, "we love and we hope that it holds."

To me, it seems to talk about war. I mean, it would make sense, and the certain emotion it sets goes with it. It's full of sorrow and lack of certainty, like whoever's point of view it suppost to be set on is wondering why it has to be like this...
