Lyrics for The Mission as interpreted by Universal Ash

The Mission Lyrics
What do you know?

The birds and the bees they are wise to the lies
So they took to the trees and took to the skies
On top of the chain and safe from the rain
Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside?

What do you know?

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
‘Cause they’re hip to the bull and hip to the lies
Ante up with your ass ‘cause you ain’t got a penny
Whatcha' know about the ways on the underside?

What do you know?

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
Ante up with your ass ‘cause you ain’t got a penny
Droppin’ bombs from above cut ya all down to size
‘Cause they're hip to the bull and they're hip to the lies

What do you know?

Yeah, the streets rose in two perfect waves in the night
Crashes on my left, and one on my right
It’s all fire and brimstone baby, so let’s go outside
It’s all fire and brimstone baby, I got my brand new pistol baby

What do you know?

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
Ante up with your ass ‘cause you ain’t got a penny
Droppin’ bombs from above cut you all down to size
‘Cause they’re hip to the bull and they’re hip to the lies
And they’re hip to the lies

Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Right in front of your eyes, it’s time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Now answer the lies it’s time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Whatcha' know about the ways on the underside?

What do you know?

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
Now answer the lies, it’s time to get up
Ante up with your ass ‘cause you ain’t got a penny
Time to get up
Dropping bombs from above cut you all down to size
Now answer the lies, it’s time to get up
‘Cause they’re hip to the bull and they’re hip to the lies
And they’re hip to the lies

Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Now answer the lies it’s time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Right in front of your eyes, it’s time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Now answer the lies it’s time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies

What do you know?

I hear "The birds and the bees GOT wise to the lies". I could be wrong.

And could he be possibly saying " WHADDYA know about the ways on the underside"?
To me it seems to make more sense since he keeps asking "What do you know?".

I love the way Maynard sings "Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea". Overall this is an excellent song. Have no idea what it could be about though.

milla jovovich is such a badass. not only is she hot but she puts down some pretty gnarly vocals. what opened my mind as to what it could be were "On top of the chain and safe from the rain.
Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside?" meaning the separation of classes. the silver spoon, and the spork.

"The birds and the bees they got wise to the lies
So they took to the trees and took to the skies"
In my opinion this is maynards way of saying:
"I dont believe in love anymore so im taking the highroad.."
"On top of the chain and safe from the rain"
on top of the food chain because he no longer believes in love. love=weakness weakness=deppression symbolized by rain here.
"Droppin bombs from above cut ya all down to size" this is talking about the new happy energy that his new songs have above=happy I get a trading weakness/emotion for power and peace of mind kinda vibe from this the song i think the "bought a hot shot gat" is representing power, control, happines.
I connect with this because when you get fucked over enough you dont want to cry about it anymore youll put on a smile and "take the high road. take it like a man. its just a broken heart son. this pain will pass away." thats momma sed. but all the songs are about the same thing anyways.(my opinion) Maynard used to always be "weakness keeps me alive at the bottom!!!" now he's trying the highroad=above=strength diffrent state of mind. musta really got burnt. "poo bear wants his honey back" the bottom line is this song is abstract like alot of great art but the emotion, the energy it puts out makes since.

I think when he says "wata you know" he's talking to all the shallow people that probably are listening to his music and dont know what the fuck he's talking about. To depressed people happy people are shallow and to happy people depressed people are weak and deppressed lol. being bipolar i see alot of this shit in my head... an emotional paralax if you will.

Aight, so to me, It's just a simple protest song. There are people whose views are on the far left or the far right of the political spectrum that act like they are wise to the system of oppression and theft, and therefore above the chains that enslave us. They are the birds and the bees (although they are the extreme opposite, they need each other).. both extremes look down at the rest of the people who aren't that hip to it-call em sheep and what not. It doesn't matter though... because the way of the underside (the ruling elite) is to spread misinformation, propaganda, and lies- if they can't keep society in check with that- they drop bombs (aka use violence or state control) to bring every dissent (right or left) to their knees and cut them down to size. Since we don't have the wealth they do to control us- we have to ante up with our bodies and push back, it doesn't matter which ideology has it all figured out- either way- the bottom feeding leeches (the elite) are destroying human lives and the planet. From what ever perspective you look at it-- it's all fire and brimstone- so get up, go outside, and take to the streets with what YOU know - and protest this shit. It's our time to take back the power to decide...

My take is that all the What do you know are basically refering to the underside:
"Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside?"

The underside could be the secret elite's of our world who run our world.
This relates the the lies, this group going to the 'skies' out of harms way to propagate there lies:
"The birds and the bees they are wise to the lies
So they took to the trees and took to the skies
On top of the chain and safe from the rain
Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside?"

Now we are waking up to the lies even though they are in the skies:
"Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Now answer the lies its time to get up"

This first verse automatically makes me think it's relating to the stock market and the current state of the economy. You can compare it with the all the bailouts and the head of companies like AIG who were "wise to the lies" (aka their financial stability) and "took to the trees" and the "skies" (aka money). They are "on top of the chain" (CEOs, Board of Directors, etc) safe from the rain (they're wealthy enough to survive if the company bankrupts). The last line is a bit tricky. It could either be a question to the government about what do they REALLY know about these companies and what's going on behind the scenes, or it could be a question for the corporation heads asking if they know what it's like to have to financially suffer like the stock holders/pension holders/average Joe who would shed blood to protect their investments.

>>>The birds and the bees they are wise to the lies
So they took to the trees and took to the skies
On top of the chain and safe from the rain
Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside?

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
'Cause they're hip to the bull and hip to the lies
Ante up with your ass 'cause you ain't got a penny
Whatcha' know about the ways on the underside?<<<<

I think the song is about an uprising. The "underside" is the repressed. The dominant group is more wealthy and holds more power. They are corrupt and have been lying about injustices done to "the underside" to maintain their status. Normally, the poor are repressed and resort to violence and many times have to give up everything to survive or in this case, fight back, thus "ante up with your ass cause you aint got a penny." The more powerful, wealthy, or higher-class group can be judgemental or ignorant, thus "whatcha know about the ways of the underside?" These people of the underside are "hip to the lies" and ready to fight back."The streets rose in two perfect waves of the night" I think is actually referring to the fight. They all showed up for the fight and the people filled the streets like waves. "It's all fire and brimstone baby, so let's go outside" is saying, let's join the riot and fight for our cause. Make these people who have wronged us face their sins and lies. Buying the gat is preparing for the fight because this person is not going to stand by and continue to be mistreated and repressed and then swept under the rug. This person is going to join the cause and fight. Now it's 'our' turn to decide who lives and who dies. The tides have changed and now we are taking the power we deserve, and we want you to answer to your lies. I think that is why the song is named "The Mission." These people have a mission of truth and equality. Awesome song.

GAT: Old slang, meanging gun. Came from shortening Gattling gun to just gat. Was used during the prohibition era to name any gun, but specifically the thompson submachine gun, aka The Tommy Gun.

GUNIEA: Ref. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea#HIV.2FAIDS_in_Guinea (The government is known as being corrupt for a number of reasons. One being economic: "Ante up with your ass..."

I believe the song is a stab at "...gun-toting Hip gangster wannabes..." who think they have something to fight for when there are people having to fight for something as basic as human rights.

Maybe the birds and the bees are the elite who don't have to live in squalor? They are at the top of the foodchain and don't have to even worry about the rain. So what do they no about living on the underside?

I think Moonvine is correct. "Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea" basically means I bought a nice handgun from an Italian (guinea is a derogatory slang term)

"Ante up with your ass cause you ain't got a penny" had to resort to prostituting yourself because you didn't have enough money to pay for it.

"It's all fire and brimstone baby" are signs of god's wrath. But now I have a gun and I am going to "decide who lives and who dies" and "cut you all down to size"?'

I think its saying "Now wise to the lies" not answer answer the lies.

"bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
Cause they're hip to the bull and hip to the lies"

Maybe something to do with the government trying to stop producing ammo? Get rid of the right to bear arms? A north end guinea who is hip to the bullshit and lies is selling guns secretly for the others who can see through the governments lies (what do you know about the ways of the underside aka us)

Ante up with your ass, cause you aint got a penny

The people in power have all the money, and we have none compared to them. So be prepared to give up your life or obey the rich and elite

He is asking us about what we know about what is really going on. I think he is basically saying open up our eyes and stop buying into their bullshit: the media, the false security we have in the government. If we dont obey them, they'll just drop bombs on us. So get wise to their lies.

Kinda scary. This song is amazing

All right... This is JUST an opinion...

"Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea" that means, that she bought a gun secretly, without anyone knowing.

"Ante up with your ass 'cause you ain't got a penny" that means, that you better be careful because this society is ruled by people who have much more money then normal people should have (like celebreties and shit like that) and they could easily own your ass.

"Droppin' bombs from above cut ya all down to size" this means, that the government is dropping bombs pretty much. (not a good explanation for this one...)

"Whatcha' know about the ways on the underside?" alright. the 'underside' means the government. this also falls along the lines--> "Cause they're hip to the bull and hip to the lies" which means... the 'underside' (aka government) is nothing but lies, and they are lying to all citizens. and eventually are going to make firearms illegal (in the near future). but we NEED firearms for protection. and they go buy illegal firearms (hence the first part) and this is where. the "Dropping bombs..." comes in. This means they are arresting people for doing illegal shit but it's the 'underside' fault that they are doing illegan shit.

and the first 3 lines of the song....

"The birds and the bees they are wise to the lies
So they took to the trees and took to the skies
On top of the chain and safe from the rain"

it pretty much means... we, the ones who loves the government and ppl that are into anarchy and hate the government, that we know what the government is doing. so we go ahead and do the shit, and try to be secretive about it.

Ok, so this is how I see it: It's basically a song about the genocide that was happening in Darfur through 2008.

"The birds and the bees they are wise to the lies
So they took to the trees and took to the skies
On top of the chain and safe from the rain"

The birds and the bees being the government who are obviously wise to their own lies. The next line is saying that they took the easier to defend high ground to get the fuck out of the line of fire from the general public that had a lot of questions. The third line indicates that they feel safe at the top of the "food chain".

"Bought a hot shot gat from a north end Guinea
'Cause they're hip to the bull and hip to the lies"

These lines are fairly self-explanatory, the people who were being slayed in Darfur were buying arms from connections in or from Guinea (which, for all you geographically challenged, is in Africa) because they knew that what was going on was fucked up.

"Ante up with your ass 'cause you ain't got a penny"

This line is basically saying that even though the Guinean's were helping they are also corrupt or criminals themselves, they were probably taking women as sex slaves in trade for the weapons.

"Droppin' bombs from above cut ya all down to size"

This is essentially stating that our own government is fucked up for not getting involved due to the fact that it was a "civil matter" and not a national one. Yet we've been dropping bombs on Iraq for years when we got involved in their civil matters...

"Yeah, the streets rose in two perfect waves in the night
Crashes on my left, and one on my right"

These lines are talking about the uproar of people from the liberal left and conservative right.

"It's all fire and brimstone baby, so let's go outside
It's all fire and brimstone baby, I got my brand new pistol baby"

These are saying how it's all the same old bullshit and that we ought to go take a stand and fight for what we believe in or what we believe is right.

"Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Right in front of your eyes, it's time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Now answer the lies it's time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies"

Again these lines are stating how our government is fucked up for turning their back, and that it's not up to our government to decide who live and who dies, and that it's seriously about damn time that we take a stand and stop letting the government walk all over us.

Well that's my interpretation, take it or leave it, it is what it is.

Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside? A reference to 'the underworld', 'organized crime', mafia, etc.

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea. If the first interpretation is correct, this could mean he purchased his gun from someone who is from Boston's North End. It's Boston 'Italian' neighborhood, and was the home of Boston's mafia.

...so let's go outside. It's all fire and brimstone baby, I got my brand new pistol baby.

This tends to dismiss the notion of the song being a reference to an overseas war. I think it's just Maynard's way of talking about anarchy, rioting, and unrest and angst among the people.

Remeber: "Learn to swim".

THis song is awesome I love the part where
she says "It's all fire and brimestone baby"
For some reason this reminds me of "Paper Planes"
When I first listened to it I only picked
up peices of the lyrics, so I thot it was
saying that we(humans) think that we are so smart.
In reality nature works fine just how it is and
we are the ones who struggle.

I guess it could still be, but now it more suits the war.
well thats it for me!

This is just my opinion, but here it goes.

It seems to me that the lyrics are not at all hard to decypher. The tricky part is deciphering who is saying what. There are two undersides being spoken about in this song, the coorupted rich america's underside, and the people who have seperated themselves from the millions of other "sheep" that inhabits the earth. This song was not only supposed to speak to the complex mind, but also to help open the eyes of other "sheep" as well. Here is my interpretation:

The birds and the bees they are wise to the lies
So they took to the trees and took to the skies
On top of the chain and safe from the rain
Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside?

Officials who knows what is going on attempted every cover up to get out of the way between protests and people who has claimed the pawned blame, so they can continue to take control of everything they wish. What do you know about this happening?

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
Cause theyre hip to the bull and hip to the lies
Ante up with your ass cause you aint got a penny
Whatcha' know about the ways on the underside?

I do not this litterally means that a gun was purchased, but that this person has ammunition against this "birds and bees" underside, and is speaking out saying you are already poor. They cannot take anything else from you, so ante up and join us. What do you know about our ounderside?

Bought a hot shot gat from a north end guinea
Ante up with your ass cause you aint got a penny
Droppin bombs from above cut ya all down to size
Cause they're hip to the bull and they're hip to the lies

This changes into a new person because Jovovich actually speaks as a person within the underside, trying to get people to realize the truth. No matter what you do, these people will always drop bombs on you and destroy your life in one way or another.

Yeah, the streets rose in two perfect waves in the night
Crashes on my left, and one on my right
Its all fire and brimstone baby, so lets go outside
Its all fire and brimstone baby, I got my brand new pistol baby

Basically referrs to the tragic that is happening. It is a perfect wave in the night, because it is hidden, but still very much so there. It is all just a little judegement, just come outside. Join the fight. It will remain the same battle, but I have some new ammo.

Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Right in front of your eyes, its time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Now answer the lies its time to get up
Our turn to decide, who lives and who dies
Whatcha' know about the ways on the underside?

This it seems to me, simply referrs to the conflict between the two undersides. Our turn to decide who lives and who dies, is simply a scare tactic brought fourth from the "higher people" on the chain. Right in front of your eyes it's time to get up, is the people fighting back saying here I am, I am not scared by your threats, answer to your lies, time to get up. Whatcha' know about the ways of the underside, is simply both undersides asking the other if they are familliar with how strong the other one is.

And that is all I got people. Thanks for reading.

The start of the song clearly says " The birds and the bees got wise to the lies " yet every single person and website have it either " they all got wise to the lies " or " they are wise to the lies " sometimes you can find both mashed into each other such as " they are all wise to the lies ".

It's really quite irritating to see that about one or two people have a set of ears.
