Lyrics for Where The Story Ends as interpreted by hopeful_canyon

Where The Story Ends Lyrics
Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before
Tell you what I’ll do instead, lay my body down on the floor
To forget what I’ve done, silhouette til the good lord come
All we know is distance
We’re close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
Trying not to lose your own, boxing up everything, you’ve got
All you ever knew of home, you’re scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go
All we know is distance
We’re close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
But this is how the story ends
Or have we just begun
To kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
The violins make no sound
And I begin to feel the ground
All we know is distance
We’re close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
But this is where the story ends
Or have we just begun
To kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one

I have listened to this song over 200 times (according to my itunes) and i still love it.

I originally thought it was about death/loss"Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before" "this is where the story ends"

But then after reading the lyrics, i feel it is more about the distance of 2 people (reminds me of my 2 closest friends who are engaged but they seem to run 2 totally different lives despite living under the same roof) "All we know is distance" " We're close and then we run" "you wonder where did the years go".

i dunno

This song also reminds me of Juliet's monolague in Romeo and Juliet, Act IV Scene III. She lays in bed considering all the things that could go wrong with the Friar's plan. She finally decides to drink the sleeping potion that makes her appear dead to her family. According to the plan she is supposed to wake up in Romeo's arms and elope with him and live happily ever after, but everyone knows how it really ends (they both die).

I don't see why she couldn't just jump out the window and run off into the night, and leave behind one of her dresses covered in fake blood, but that is just my opinion.

I think it's about a couple chosing whether or not to elope.

The first verse (Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before
Tell you what I?ll do instead, lay my body down on the floor
To forget what I?ve done, silhouette til the good lord come)

is just, kind of a little introduction, the speaker is thinking about how he has disobeyed his parents wishes to not "be with" this person.

The Chorus ( All we know is distance
We?re close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one) is about the basis of their relationship, how they have no real time together, the always must be together in secret.

The second verse (you?re scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go)
is about how the speaker does not want to lose his family for the one he loves, someone who may or may not always be there for him, like when things don't work out and he has to return home after years of no contact.

The rest of the song is just about how from this moment on their relationship may be ending because they can longer go against their parents without serious action and commitment (this is where the story ends) or it may be the beginning of their long and happy marriage when they elope (or have we just begun)

but like xkristinaa said, its just about bridging a gap in any relationship, not matter what kind of gap that may be.

While i can certainly see how this could be about relatable hardhops between a long distance couple, i prefer to see it from a different perspective.

To me, this song is about a man & a woman, & the incapapability, so far, to close the gap in their relationship. "We're close, and then we run. Kiss away the difference. I know you hate this one, but this is how the story ends, or have we just begun to kiss away the difference?" - To me, that represents a constant divide in their relationship. And each time they face that issue, they have to choose whether to face it head on, or just give up on themselves entirely. So far, they have not been able to face it. But that one line "or have we just begun to kiss away the differnce" represents the hope that the immensity of their love is strong enough, and that they will soon be able to close that gap. I think the message of the song is universal and can be applied to any type of issue/gap in your relationship, but the one pictured here is perhaps a long distance relationship. "Scared to see your mother there in the dark" shows that the girl may have finally come to terms and decided to close the gap between her man, but she's scared to see that reminder there (her mother) as another reason to run from herself again.

sorry it's so long, i tend to babble(: let me know if you agree.

Isaac talked about this song..
It's about how he was "freaking out" before his gf (now his wife) left home to move in with him.

I agree that this song is about being afraid to commit. I love it -- favourite song off their new album, but the ending annoys me. I know it's a bit from Enough for Now but it's distorted and makes my ears bleed.

I've always thought that this song is about two people who love each other but never can be in relationship for a number of reasons (partners, etc). Despite them not being able to be in a proper relationship, they get close but realise that they shouldn't ('We're close and then we run') But no matter how much they try to be apart, they can't even though they know it's wrong. Eventually, it gets too much for one of them and they are no longer close ('But this is how the story ends')

It's quite hard to write what I think it means, but hopefully this sort-of describes it

to me this is about a guy who is in love with someone and he she is moving on to a different chapter in her life and leaving him behind.

"Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before"
--- this girl is moving away and he dosent know how to react and he dosent want to stop her but he loves her.

"All we know is distance
Were close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one"
--- they didnt get to be together for a long time and she is moving and they are saying goodbye.

"All you ever knew of home, youre scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go"
--- the girl is scared of starting a new chapter of her life without her family and friends.

"The violins make no sound
And I begin to feel the ground"
--- no one feels sorry for him and he is just starting to realize that he is going to miss this girl a lot.

^^ Thanks for those.

That's actually more of a lead up to "Enough For Now", because those same lyrics appear in that song :)

At the very end of the song there are these lyrics:

Extra lyrics at the END of the song:

Listen til he's twenty
Lasts til twenty one
Rushin past the window
Like he's watching his own son
Sixty years of sorrow
Brought five to six of bliss
Left my mothers mother
Without so much as a kiss.

Makes me think something with someones parents?????

I think the first half of the song is pretty cut and dry. I think its about people in realtionships not wanting to become attached of open themselves up to getting hurt. But I also think it is about losing your individualism, about a person afraid of becoming a couple rather then two people together. I say that because of where it talks about, "Trying not to lose your own, boxing up everything, youve got
All you ever knew of home, youre scared scared to see". I think form halfway down things get a little more where personal interprataions take place. The just knowing distance part is about people that want eachother but cant make it work, they love each other but something is always wrong. Their close at times, but when things get hard they seperate and run their own ways. "Kiss away the difference, I know you hate this one", I think it is about, one of them trying to make everything better by saying Im sorry or kissing you to show that their alright, even if you dont feel the same. "this is how the story ends", means that this is the end and the process restarts.

I think the last set of lines is the most powerful. "Violins make no sound", that is just odd, and I think thats what its meant to be. It just not what you'd expect. "I begin to feel the ground", I think this is saying how he isnt in the clouds any longer, when he/she is forced to facce life with out the other cause they didnt see everything falling about, it just wasnt expected. (I think that line and the one about the violins are linked). "Is this how the story ends, or have we just begun", I think this is about one of them wondering if the other will come back or are stuck to face new begins with alone or with another love.

When I hear the song, it makes me think about growing up and moving away for the first time like to college, the military, etc.

From what I heard from Isaac, this song was about a 'girl' who didn't want to move to Colorado and he tried convincing her.

No doubt this song is a good one.

i think this entire song revolves around people who begin to fall in love, then are too scared to get attach/become vulnerable. it has to do with their past and their lack of trust for others.

"Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go
All we know is distance
We’re close and then we run
Kiss away the difference"

the mother ran away from him. so all he knows to do is keep his distance. just run away when things become real.

can relate.

I think this is about trying to make a long distance relationship work, but all they get is a few minutes and then they have to run again, and they try to make it work (kiss away the difference) but every time they are left wondering if "this is where the story ends".
