Trying not to lose my head
But I have never been this scared before
Tell you what I'll do instead,
Lay my body down on the floor
To forget what I've done,
Silhouette 'till the good lord come

All we know is distance
We're close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one

Trying not to lose your own,
Boxing up everything, you've got
All you ever knew of home,
You're scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door,
You wonder where did the years go

All we know is distance
We're close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one

But this is how the story ends
Or have we just begun
To kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
The violins make no sound
And I begin to feel the ground

All we know is distance
We're close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one

But this is where the story ends
Or have we just begun
To kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one.

My Interpretation:What everyone else is saying about the song being about a long distance relationship makes sense, but in my opinion, it's about losing a loved one and continually running from acceptance that he / she is gone. "violins make no sounds / and I begin to feel the ground" : I take this to be the turning point when acceptance finally settles in and reality hits.
I love this song, and I think the lyrics mean so much more to me when it's about acceptance of losing someone you love.
The Fray is incredible. I love them.

General Comment:From the first time I heard this song I right away thought it was about the end of a high school relationship.
The beginning is about being scared to let go, knowing that the end of the year is probably going to bring the relationship to an end too, but still trying to keep it together anyway, atleast for the time being.

"Trying not to lose your own, boxing up everything, youve got
All you ever knew of home, youre scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go"

Time is running out for them, they're packing to go away to school, leaving everything they know, trying to distance themselves from their parents. They wonder how it came so fast.

All they know is the distance they're creating between each other, and they find themselves getting closer and then realizing and pulling away again when they remember they have to leave.

"But this is how the story end, or have we just begun?" They see it as the end of the relationship, but there's still this new beginning they have right in front of them when they leave.

    "The violins make no sound
And I begin to feel the ground"
I always picture Graduation when I hear that line, because they're so focused on what it means that they don't hear the music playing as they go. This is when they really feel the floor fall out from underneath them. Like that's it. It's really ending.

General Comment:I have listened to this song over 200 times (according to my itunes) and i still love it.

I originally thought it was about death/loss"Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before" "this is where the story ends"

But then after reading the lyrics, i feel it is more about the distance of 2 people (reminds me of my 2 closest friends who are engaged but they seem to run 2 totally different lives despite living under the same roof) "All we know is distance" " We're close and then we run" "you wonder where did the years go".

    i dunno

General Comment:This song also reminds me of Juliet's monolague in Romeo and Juliet, Act IV Scene III. She lays in bed considering all the things that could go wrong with the Friar's plan. She finally decides to drink the sleeping potion that makes her appear dead to her family. According to the plan she is supposed to wake up in Romeo's arms and elope with him and live happily ever after, but everyone knows how it really ends (they both die).

I don't see why she couldn't just jump out the window and run off into the night, and leave behind one of her dresses covered in fake blood, but that is just my opinion.

My Interpretation:I think it's about a couple chosing whether or not to elope.

The first verse (Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before
Tell you what I?ll do instead, lay my body down on the floor
To forget what I?ve done, silhouette til the good lord come)

is just, kind of a little introduction, the speaker is thinking about how he has disobeyed his parents wishes to not "be with" this person.

The Chorus ( All we know is distance
We?re close and then we run
    Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one) is about the basis of their relationship, how they have no real time together, the always must be together in secret.

The second verse (you?re scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go)
is about how the speaker does not want to lose his family for the one he loves, someone who may or may not always be there for him, like when things don't work out and he has to return home after years of no contact.

The rest of the song is just about how from this moment on their relationship may be ending because they can longer go against their parents without serious action and commitment (this is where the story ends) or it may be the beginning of their long and happy marriage when they elope (or have we just begun)

but like xkristinaa said, its just about bridging a gap in any relationship, not matter what kind of gap that may be.

General Comment:While i can certainly see how this could be about relatable hardhops between a long distance couple, i prefer to see it from a different perspective.

To me, this song is about a man & a woman, & the incapapability, so far, to close the gap in their relationship. "We're close, and then we run. Kiss away the difference. I know you hate this one, but this is how the story ends, or have we just begun to kiss away the difference?" - To me, that represents a constant divide in their relationship. And each time they face that issue, they have to choose whether to face it head on, or just give up on themselves entirely. So far, they have not been able to face it. But that one line "or have we just begun to kiss away the differnce" represents the hope that the immensity of their love is strong enough, and that they will soon be able to close that gap. I think the message of the song is universal and can be applied to any type of issue/gap in your relationship, but the one pictured here is perhaps a long distance relationship. "Scared to see your mother there in the dark" shows that the girl may have finally come to terms and decided to close the gap between her man, but she's scared to see that reminder there (her mother) as another reason to run from herself again.

sorry it's so long, i tend to babble(: let me know if you agree.

Song Meaning:Isaac talked about this song..
It's about how he was "freaking out" before his gf (now his wife) left home to move in with him.

General Comment:I agree that this song is about being afraid to commit. I love it -- favourite song off their new album, but the ending annoys me. I know it's a bit from Enough for Now but it's distorted and makes my ears bleed.

Song Meaning:I've always thought that this song is about two people who love each other but never can be in relationship for a number of reasons (partners, etc). Despite them not being able to be in a proper relationship, they get close but realise that they shouldn't ('We're close and then we run') But no matter how much they try to be apart, they can't even though they know it's wrong. Eventually, it gets too much for one of them and they are no longer close ('But this is how the story ends')

It's quite hard to write what I think it means, but hopefully this sort-of describes it
