'Cause I'm so scared of dying since your fall
I'm so scared of dying when you watched it go down, down
And I watched your face in the fire near Jamison Hall
While your sister and brother read chapters on how your skin burned
You're singing hallelujah, and the angels came and took you down
You asked the right direction, they told you it's protection, you know

Did you believe 'em? Or are they liars?
Do you believe 'em? What a lie

'Cause I'm so scared of dying since I saw your skin fall
I'm so scared of dying since you watched it go down, down, down
Now I told you I need you and you screamed "hallelujah, here we go"
And I hoped you believed me when I told you you were beautiful
'Cause I meant it, man... But I didn't always mean it
Does that make me a liar? I mean it. What a lie.

These cuts on my fingers, from the laundry I've done
Washing out all your prints, and the fire in my hall
Don't worry about it, I heard what you said and it's good
And I appreciate it more than any other man ever could
God, I believe you, anyway... Just leave me, any day.

Where I told you I loved you, God damn-ing, I'm in it
When I told you I loved you, good Jesus, I'm in it
I hear lives look like fire crackers
And oh shit you're not breathing, but man I can feel you inside
Don't waste away, under the ground; rise up for me, under the ground
'Cause I'm wasting away, under the ground

General Comment:He's at sea. He started a fire trying to kill himself. This is him realizing is too scared of dying. The captain saves him, and dies in the process.

Song Meaning:I think it's about, as previously mentioned, the aftermath of "Gasoline Family", where he's flicking matches thinking about burning his wife for what she did to him and then catching his hall on fire. Thus causing the Captain to come in, save him, and die in the process. I think it's the Captain mainly because in "I'm Not Ready To Forgive You" the sailor mentions that he sees his wife when his ship lands (another big reason; in the song he's still out to sea on the ship, so his wife is nowhere near him). And in the final song, he's talking to the Captain's "spirit" (not back and forth; more like he's talking to his memory), giving hints at his demise (using sentences in the past tense, hinting at his past, yet ceased, existance). The grief that is on his chest now is the death of his mentor, and his beloved Captain.

"I hope you believed me when I told you you were beautiful, 'cause I meant it man...."

General Comment:i think its about somebody loved died in a fire (burned alive). or maybe it just a metaphore for something else.

he says he loves her : "when i told you i loved you god dammit i meant it
when i told you i loved you, good jesus, i meant it" and
"yeah no shit your not breathing, but man i can feel you inside"

he says she burned: "yeah i lost your face in the fire near Jammison hall
while your sister and brother read chapters on how your skin burned"

through out the song it begines to suggests that he has alot of grief on his chest

    General Comment:i love this song!
i gather that he's contemplating burning his house down and killing his wife.
    (matchstick and gasoline)
destroying the evidence and trying to then move on (washing out all your prints from the fire in my heart)

the references to angels taking her down suggests to me that he suspects Suzanna thinks she hasn't done anything wrong, and that when she dies, angels will come.
She's singing hallelujah, and then perhaps is confused that she is going down (to hell) instead of up to heaven.
"you asked the right directions, they told you its protection" - they didnt tell her where she was going.
"did you believe them? or are they liars?" - he's asking if she was fooled by the angels.

the end of song brings us back to his true emotions; he knows that if he were to kill her, he would miss her and feel lonely.

but i think it's "now your legs look like firecrackers"
"washing out all your prints from the fire in my heart"
and "Where I told you I loved you, God dammit, I meant it
When I told you I loved you, good Jesus, I meant it"

His accent comes and goes in some songs, im pretty sure in one song he sings "Mutter" (german) instead of mother, so in this song "i meant it" is mumbled pretty bad.

General Comment:There is one part that convinces me this is again about his wife.

"don't worry about it, i heard what you said and it's good, and i appreciate it more than any other man ever could. i believe you, anyways. i believe you, any day. when i told you i loved you god dammit i meant it. when i told you i loved you, good jesus, i meant it"

Obviously he has this enormous grief on his chest from what happened, but he can't stop loving his wife. He meant everything he told her, and love doesn't just die. When you really love someone you can't stop loving them even if you hate them. So his wife said sorry, and he believes her and appreciates everything she's doing after she got caught. Not that she wants to be with him again, but she is sorry.

Everything else, like about the firecracker legs, that could just be him viewing her in a different way. Haven't you found something out about someone, and afterwards had a different opinion about them? I think this is the case here. And about dieing, who knows? Some people say break ups have the same sadness intensity as losing a loved one, so maybe he's making allusions to that.

General Comment:while he was flicking matches around thinking about burning his wife (gasoline family) he catches the room on fire. His captain comes in and sees him, and saves him, dying in the process. Now he sees his captain dead, burned up, and his legs looking like firecrackers. He's angry that he died, and angry that it was his own fault.

General Comment:amz: these lyrics are copy-pasted from the Right Away, Great Captain! blog on myspace. You're right, the lyrics differ in the actual song, but this is what Andy Hull has put up.

General Comment:Wow. I thought Manchester Orchestra was impeccable, but then I found this project by Andy Hull and was once again blown away!

There's something about his lyrics and singing style that I rarely find in any other music group.
