Holdin' It Down For The Underground Lyrics
Been through a lot in the last year
It’s like everything I love is slipping away
And every time I come home
Some more of me isn’t there

I've gotta get it together
I need to do things for myself
I’ve given everything, but still you take more from me
I need some room to breathe

Come on come on, you know this isn’t what we planned on
Come on come on, tell me we’ll be okay (we’ll be, o-kay!)
Let’s go back, let’s go back, to a time where I still felt I had family

This isn’t what I remember
Everyone's looking out for just themselves
If need be, I’ll be happy to leave
Just be warned, I’ll be taking most of you with me

I see straight through, that smile straight through that painted face
Don’t think that I can’t tell
Which one of you is against me

Come on come on, you know this isn’t what we planned on
Come on come on, tell me we’ll be okay (we’ll be, o-kay!)
Let’s go back, let’s go back to a time where I still felt I had family

I have the greatest faith in fools
I turned my back and out came the wolves
PAY ATTENTION.

Come on come on, you know this isn’t what we planned on
Come on come on, tell me we’ll be okay (we’ll be, o-kay!)
Let’s go back, let’s go back to a time where I still felt I had family

Been through a lot in the past year
It’s like everything I love is slipping away

I think it could possibly be:

"Just be warned, I’ll be taking my success with me"

"Just be warned, I’ll be taking my structure with me"

"Just be warned, I’ll be taking no ___ with me"

"Just be warned, I’ll be taking the ____ with me"

"...taking the statue with me?"

play with those.

Now, I can't explain why, and it really doesn't make too much sense, but I suppose it could work. Here's what i hear.

"Just be warned, I'll be taking my SUNDOWN with me." I doubt its right, but from the way he vocalizes it, it sure sounds like it.

You all had good guesses,
but I have listened to this part of the song over and over
and I finally figured out what he says,
the correct lyrics are,

If need be, I’ll be happy to leave
Just be warned, I’ll be taking my SUITCASE with me

It makes complete sense when you listen to the song, also.

"I turn my back and you get the worst!"

Could it be that?

Nobody's really taken a shot at the meaning, and it's pretty self-evident, but here goes anyways.

If this song had to be summed up in one word, it would probably be betrayal. The writer talks about how there are people working against them and how they don't think that the writer knows this. Also, the writer implies that they shouldn't have trusted people, and the second they turned their back, they regretted the choice to trust who they did.

The writer appears to be addressing somebody, and they seem to be marginally involved in the backstabbing, although it seems the writer has faith in the idea that maybe they weren't a central figure to it or largely responsible for it. He implores them to go back to a time when none of this was happening. The writer draws a line, asking the person to prove themselves by leaving with them, knowing that if they have to leave alone, then the person most likely did take sides against him.

I love the line:

I have the greatest faith in fools,
I turned my back and out came the wolves.

It's so relevant to life in how you have to be careful with your trust and where it lies.

It's similar to the line "you can't trust everyone you meet" in You Already Know What You Are.

Love this song. Love the whole cd.
