The future needs a big kiss
Winds blow with a twist
Never seen a moon like this
Can you see it too?

Night is falling everywhere
Rockets hit the fun-fair
Satan loves a bomb scare
But he won't scare you

Hey! Sexy boots
Get on your boots yeah!

Free me from a dark dream
Candy floss, ice cream
All the kids are screaming but the ghosts aren't real
Here's what we gotta be
Love and community
Laughter is eternity if joy is real

You don't know how beautiful
You don't know how beautiful you are
You don't know
You don't get it do you?
You don't know how beautiful you are

If some have stuff to blow it up
Well, we are into growing up
Women are the future
All the big revelations
I got a submarine
You've got gasoline
I don't wanna talk about wars between nations
Not right now

Sexy boots
No! no no no
Get on your boots yeah!
Not right now!
Foxy boots

You don't know how beautiful
You don't know how beautiful
You are
You don't know
You don't get it do you?
You don't know how beautiful you are

Sexy boots
I don't wanna talk about wars between the nations
Sexy Boots yeah!

Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound sound
Let me in the sound sound
Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound now
Oh God I'm going down
I don't wanna drown now
Meet me in the sound

Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound sound
Let me in the sound sound
Meet me in the sound

Get on your boots
Get on your boots
Get on your boots
Yeah hey hey!
Get on your boots
Yeah hey hey!
Get on your boots
Yeah hey hey!
Get on your boots
Yeah hey hey!

General Comment:I think this song is an ode to women in the military - a relatively new phenomenon from a historical perspective.

Get on your boots - military boots.

It's praising the bravery and heroism of female soldiers.

Go back, read the lyrics from that perspective. Great song.

General Comment:The "Vertigo" of this album. Perhaps related to the spiral symbol of HTDAB with Bono screaming that's he's going down in the sound. When I first heard it on the radio, I didn't like it. Wasn't the kind of U2 I enjoyed and it never really grew on me. It was cool to see them perform it on the Grammy's but that's probably just because I was excited to see them on TV. I do, however, enjoy the "Let me in the sound!" chant during the song. Great, strong Larry right there.

Laughter is eternity. Goes along with the infinity theme of the album

Song Meaning:I had a bit of an epiphany about this song the other day. I feel their is a connection in the themes between this song, "Stand Up Comedy" and "Breath" In that they are all calling those who love God to get out there into our community and live loud God’s love, as opposed to preaching at people! Walk the talk, lead by example instead of just getting in peoples faces. For me "sexy boots" is referring to "beautiful feet" (as in "how beautiful are the feet of them who bring good news") Below is the scripture taken from "The Message Bible" - my favourite version and according to the books jacket cover Bono’s too.
11-13Scripture reassures us, "No one who trusts God like this—heart and soul—will ever regret it." It's exactly the same no matter what a person's religious background may be: the same God for all of us, acting the same incredibly generous way to everyone who calls out for help. "Everyone who calls, 'Help, God!' gets help."
14-17But how can people call for help if they don't know who to trust? And how can they know who to trust if they haven't heard of the One who can be trusted? And how can they hear if nobody tells them? And how is anyone going to tell them, unless someone is sent to do it? That's why Scripture exclaims,

A sight to take your breath away!
    Grand processions of people
telling (living out) all the good things of God!
But not everybody is ready for this, ready to see and hear and act. Isaiah asked what we all ask at one time or another: "Does anyone care, God? Is anyone listening and believing a word of it?" The point is: Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ's Word is preached (in action), there's nothing to listen to. (Romans chapter 10)
In Bono’s words, to everyone who loves God…
“We are people borne of sound
The songs are in our eyes
Gonna wear them like a crown

Walk out, into the sunburst street
Sing your heart out, sing my heart out
I've found grace inside a sound
I found grace, it's all that I found
    And I can breathe
    Breathe now”

    General Comment:Hey

Great ideas about the women theme - I reckon that is the core of it, as shown in the video. I would tweak the interpretation slightly -> I think this is a personification of Africa as the woman. The band sings of Africa being beautiful, full of potential, and he is telling it that now is the time that it can get back on its feet and show itself to the world.

Where do I get this from?
-"I've gotta submarine, you've got gasoline" -> Africa has all the oil, the west has all the might. Why can't it be big?
-"Let me in the sound..." -> Africa needs to be let into the world's conversation
-"if someone's into blowing up we're not into growing up" -> saying that conflict and dictatorships e.g. Zimbabwe are what stunt Africa's development
-the second chorus in the video shows 1. African women 2. a raised fist with a white armband (Make Poverty History) amongst a crowd in a desert landscape

But I think this is a great mystery that has me a bit stumped - "you don't know - you don't get it do you" - haha feels like me.

My Opinion:First, U2 rocks and despite the real meaning of the song, it definitely reflects U2's previous political undertones (or overtones, if you will). To me, the meaning of this song can be whatever you want it to be. I think that based on the lyrics, the song is about the United States of America. Every lyric can be directed at some of aspect of the USA. It talks about all of the changes that are going on, whether geologically, economically, politically, etc. It makes reference to how bloated the American egos are and how entitled we feel. "...Candy floss ice cream..."? It makes reference to how blase we are about the threat of attacks from other countries (..."rockets at the fun fair, Satan loves a bomb scare but he won't scare you"). The fact that other countries are at constant war, while the US tries to take the upper hand is reflected in "that's someone's stuff their blowing up, we're into growing up." It also makes reference to our dependence on foreign oil, ("I've got a submarine, you've got gasoline...") The United States is called the Melting Pot of the World because it is the land of opportunity. People from all over the world want to come here to make a better lives for themselves and for some reason we just don't see it..."You don't know how beautiful, you don't know how beautiful you are. You don't know! You don't get it, do you?"...Just my opinion. Thanks.

General Comment:Before I give my interpretation, I have to say that I like previous U2 albums better than this but that doesn't make want to rag about how I don't like their new stuff on here! Goodness!
I agree with the posters about this song having political undertones. I think he's saying we need to confront evil. I totally agree. If everyone in their own heart, home, neighborhood, city, state, nation confronted evil with good, what kind of world would we live in? Also, I think that Bono uses words that are more appealing to the masses in guise of what his message is really about. For instance, in the 90s song Mysterious Ways, Bono sings 'she moves in mysterious way' and 'johnny take a walk with your sister the moon' and 'take a dive with your sister in the rain let her talk about the things you can't explain.. to touch is to heal... " So basically the lyrics point to a 'she' but he is actually talking about the Spirit of God. You can disagree if you want but its so plain to my knowledge. Taking a walk with your sister the moon, now that can't be a real woman, its metaphorical for the divine feminine (i personally think he is speaking of mother mary or the spirit). the second line: dive in the rain alludes to having the holy spirit poured out on you, and speaking things you can't explain is likened to the gift of tongues. some people actually have the gift of speaking languages they don't know if it wasn't for the Holy Spirit. If you listen closely to the end of Mysterious Ways he says "the spirit, lift you up and up' .. she moves me baby she moves me baby, lift my days light up my nights.." its so there! So for that long off topic interpretation of mysterious ways, my POINT is that Bono uses words to guise what he really means for the sake of it being pleasing to the ear, masses, or melody. So 'sexy boots' is like him saying let's fight evil with love. He's a poet so I think he can do pretty much what he wants to do with words.
