Memory comes when memory's old
I am never the first to know
Following the stream up North
Where do people like us float

There is room in my lap
For bruises, asses, hand claps
I will never disappear
Forever, I'll be here

Whispering
Morning, keep the streets empty for me

I learned to not eat the snow
My fur is hot, my tongue is cold
On a bed of spider web
I think about to change myself

A lot of hope in a one man tent
There's no room for innocence
Take me home before the storm
Velvet mites will keep us warm

Whispering
Morning, keep the streets empty for me

Uncover our heads and reveal our souls
We were hungry before we were born

My Interpretation:Maybe it's just because I saw the video first but I interpret it this way...

    Memory comes when memory's old
I am never the first to know
    Following this stream up north
Where do people like us float

I think she feels forgotten.. will people even see her pain...

There is room in my lap
    For bruises, asses, hand claps
    I will never disappear
    For forever I'll be here

...She been beaten and abused.. but it hasn't made her disappear... street people never disappear...

    Whispering
    Morning keep the streets empty
    For me

...The regulars can have the city all the want during the day... but night time the streets a empty and they belong to her and the street people!....

I'm lying down and eating snow

... sometimes that all a street person might have to eat...

My fur is hot, my tongue is cold

.. when it's hot there is no place to cool down, and when it's cold there is no place to warm up you are always uncomfortable....

On a bed of spider web
I think of how to change myself

..... the place to sleep is as flimsy as a spider web, and it's at those times you actually begin to think about how to change and yet the more you try to think o a way out... the more trapped you feel yourself becomef...

A lot of hope in one maintains
    There's no room for innocence
So take me home before the storm
Velvet walls will keep us warm

...The only hope she can find is in prostitution, and so out to the corner she goes.

    Whispering
    Morning keep the streets empty
    For me
.... and silently she hopes that no one shows up.. no johns come to call...

Uncover our heads and reveal our souls
We were hungry before we were born

.... so go ahead she says uncover my shame wag your finger is you want, reveal our darken bitter soul if you want... but remember..... we were hunger before we were ever born and not much has changed for the street person.

General Comment:Definitely a deer, I can certainly hear that and it seems to be the deer singing and her mother - nature singing about their relationships. Nature is her mother after all. But nature also can keep her trails empty - her streets. If they're not and wolves or other of mother nature's children have picked up on it, she's in great peril. Deer generally follow the same trails - creatures of habit. The storm, another of nature's children, can also cause grave harm to her, exposing her trails if snow. But even as a child of nature she will always be a child of nature, even if her mother recreates her in another form...
...following the streams up north... ...streams can act as paths for deer in peatland and bogland; the peat and bogs slow the deer down whereas the streams have had the peat washed away and the rocks and stones underneath give a far faster and less risky means of travelling... ...the direction the deer is travelling is 'north' - 'up'... ...again, the stream is part of her 'street'. People like us being - deer as people... ...float as a way of travelling on water... ...here she is travelling in the water but it is still very much travelling... ...streams also attract hunters(wolves, mans) too for the same reasons. ...I don't know about memory comes when we grow old... ...I think that's mother nature singing...
...Only my thoughts - for what they're worth.
Wonderful music - extremely thought provoking

General Comment:Reminds me a little of Stephen King's "It". Especially when she says "Where do people like us float". But this may just be because I'm rather obsessed with the book right now.

General Comment:I believe this song is about human nature and the human spirit. It's easiest to analyze the human spirit when you use something or someone (like a homeless or displaced person) who has been completely stripped of the complexities that society and the material world can impose. We're listening to the voice of a human being...simplified. When we strip away all the bs - we are animals (looking for shelter, food, and warmth),and if those needs aren't threatened, we strive for goodness and love - there's no bad intention, and with that comes an innocence (kind of like how you might picture an animal - or the dear everyone is referencing). Strip us of our desires to compete with each other, to make money, to be "attractive", to live within the confines of society - we're simple beings. A homeless person may not be bogged down by the petty shit a lot of us waste so much energy on. They want food and warmth...and with that simplicity comes clarity, and a sense of freedom...an outsiders perspective on humanity. I just want to be warm, full, and a "good person". Where do I find more people like me? "Where do people like us float?"

"...hope in a one man tent, there's no room for innocence". Our struggle to survive in general, and the need to compete amongst ourselves makes it difficult to be a good person - when you have to fight to stay alive, it can force us to push aside our humanity. "keep the streets empty for me" - keep me safe, and away from the hustle/bustle/potential for negative interactions with the world we've created. Keep me innocent (but not ignorant) and sheltered. The song's about the true nature of a human being, and the struggle to survive while keeping our innocence/"goodness".

Or it could be about shapeshifting - like everyone else is saying. Haha. :) Whatev's. It's art. It can mean something different to so many people.

My Opinion:How about we remove the weakness from those insights and replace it by a vast emptiness in the soul of an immortal female predator, a shapeshifter whispering to a human:
Morning. Keep the streets empty for me.
    You are prey.

Maybe this is a duett? Someone suggested there were two singers. Then there is a deer and something else.

Song Meaning:This song is about a deer singing, as she mentioned in her interview. I just love the song and how she wrote it. Deep thinker!

Song Meaning:As for meaning, there's an interesting interpretation in the music video, which features two Sámi girls wandering through an empty urban landscape, possibly homeless and dispossessed. This ties in with the "stream up North", and "people like us", as well as the "one man tent".

In this reading, you can feel the loneliness and isolation of homeless, dispossessed people wandering the streets of a big city in the quiet hours of the early morning.

Lyric Correction:I'm pretty sure the second verse goes:

    "I'm lying down, eating snow
My fur is hot, my tongue is cold
On a bed of a spider web
I think of how to change myself."

This makes more sense in terms of the first two lines hanging together, and the last line being grammatical y correct.

My Interpretation:I think there are several themes in this song; dangerous environments, human nature, life lessons, dreams, fear of the unknown. There seem to be a lot of references to motherhood on this album, and I think that may be a major theme in this song too.

I think Karin is playing with the idea that dreams reveal ourselves to ourselves. The two characters in the song are Karin, a new mother in the waking world, and Karin as she dreamed herself to be, a deer, passive and submissive to the elements, trying to survive while tending to her own needs. Upon waking from the dream, she's trying to remember it and what it could mean.

    "memory comes when memory's old
i am never the first to know"

She remembers following a stream, not knowing where it will lead her. A metaphor for herself in real life, following an unseen path.

    "following this stream up north
where do people like us float?"

Being a new mother in the waking world, her child means everything to her and is her only priority. She forces herself to keep following the stream.

"there is room in my lap
    for bruises, asses, handclaps
    i will never disappear
    for forever, i'll be here"

She prays to keep not only her child safe from the world, but to keep herself safe so that she can care for her child. The context switches throughout the song between human and animal references because she's a human dreaming that she's a deer.

    "whispering
morning keep the streets empty for me
morning keep the streets empty for me"

More references to being a deer in the wild, submitting to her environment, learning from her mistakes.

"i learned to not eat the snow
my fur is hot, my tongue is cold
on a bed of spider web
i think of how to change myself

a lot of hope in one man tent
    there's no room for innocence
so take me home before the storm
velvet mites will keep us warm"

Lastly, another reference to human nature and motherhood. Opening oneself to another and tending to ones needs. The "hunger" could be referring to our desire to learn and experience. To follow the stream, and float along with the rest of our people.

"uncover our heads and reveal our souls
we were hungry before we were born"
