Lyrics for Are We Human? as interpreted by sher_143

Are We Human? Lyrics
I did my best to notice, when the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender, I was brought but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous when I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart... and cut the cord

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human, or are we dancer

Pay my respects to grace and virtue, send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance, they always did the best they could
And so long to devotion you taught me everything I know
Wave good bye, wish me well, you gotta let me go

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human, or are we dancer

Will your system be alright?
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer...
You've gotta let me know

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human... or are we dancer

Are we human, or are we dancer
Are we human, or are we dancer

this song's chorus ("are we human, or are we dancer") was inspired by a hunter s. thompson quote; "america is raising a generation of dancers."
by this he meant that we (americans) on do as we're taught and basically what is "average," i guess you could say...like dancers doing only the steps they've been taught and not changing them.

the line "and sometimes i get nervous when i see an open door" is saying that he gets nervous/anxious when faced with a decision ("open door.")

i think the rest is open to interpretation.

I wondered if "dancer" is really plural only we don't hear the "s". It sounds more logical if it is plural. I love
love the interpretation from hollyoh. The quote helps a lot. I've imagined he is being picked up by a UFO and so this is what he is thinking a feeling. Maybe he would rather not be with the dancers on earth who can't think for themselves.

I believe this song is more philosophical. To my opinion, it means that we live our lives as puppets, even though he has vital signs. We enjoy given life experiences: romance, kindness, witness death. When it says you thought me everything I know, he speaks of Universe itself has thought him live… When he is nervous on his knees, he prays, clearing his heart and connects with Universe, to receive answers he is seeking for….Simple prayer.

The song is just called Human.

and yes, I agree with hollyoh, its based on a quote.
Its basically describing how stereotypical and 'dead' this generation is.

great beat and clever lyrics, this song is a must have on any playlist.

What I want to know is why is it listed as 'Are We Human' when the song is in fact called 'Human'. And it is dancer - check this out if you don't believe me

I've probably added no value or worth by saying this but sorry if it offends you so

I think this song is about Brandon's struggle with his faith. I think he's questioning if there's a God or not. I also agree with hollyoh, the Hunter S Thompson quote sounds right.

"And I'm on my knees, looking for the answer"
He's praying. Praying to god, trying to figure out if there is a god or not?

"Are we human, or are we dancer?"
Are we human, did god put all of us here for a purpose? Or is there no god, and we're all just here on the earth, dancing?

"YOU'VE GOTTA LET ME KNOW"
God, please give me a sign! Tell me you exist, tell me we're all here for a reason!

That's how I interpret it.

Im not sure, but could it be denser instead of dancer? its weird that the s is not there when it is no reason it should not be there, if you guys get my drift. Are we human or are we denser, gives it a lot more meaning. Or so i think.

ok, so heres what i think on the whole thing

I did my best to notice, when the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender, I was brought but I was kind
-i think hes describing an epifany that he got when he was contemplating the world and life in general

And sometimes I get nervous when I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart... and cut the cord
-this is something that as humans we all feel when we start a new stage in our life and hes just saying dive in! dont be a dancer...

Are we human, or are we dancer
-when we were created (not evolutionized, hes mormon) God made us with a freewill, dancers dont really have a free will, we follow our choreographers steps and wear what they tell us to wear and even make ourselves look like what they want us to look like, our only purpose is to perform, thats what the human race has turned into, everyone has become dancers

My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human, or are we dancer
-hes describing the desperation and the heart ache realizing what we have become

Pay my respects to grace and virtue, send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance, they always did the best they could
-these are things we are taught in our youth, these things are supposed to help us when we grow up and i'm thinking hes saying you need more than that to make it

And so long to devotion you taught me everything I know
Wave good bye, wish me well, you gotta let me go
-devotion is dedication or attachment to something or someone, pretty much love, hes learned alot from love, but hes going to let go of all those things hes listed

Will your system be alright?
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?
-i think hes talking about when youve gotten so far that it about kills you to look back at your youth and what you used to be

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer...
You've gotta let me know

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human... or are we dancer

Are we human, or are we dancer
Are we human, or are we dancer

he is clearly saying he has lost his faith. I did my best to notice, when the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender, I was brought but I was kind
-i think he is talking about baptism- not his choice
And sometimes I get nervous when I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart... and cut the cord
-
the open door is intellectual freedom - he is nervous because he has to give up the certainty of religion (cut the cord) if he is going to experience that freedom

Are we human, or are we dancer
-can we make our own decisions or are we controlled by the supernatural

My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human, or are we dancer
-he has spent time trying to find the answer through religion
Pay my respects to grace and virtue, send my condolences to good
Give my regards to
Saul and Romans, they always did the best they could
- a reference to the bible and to the things of value he must give up if he loses his faith
And so long to devotion you taught me everything I know
Wave good bye, wish me well, you gotta let me go
-Even so he is leaving the faith
Will your system be alright?
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?
-In leaving he is leaving family and people he cares about although it is clear that he has now lost his faith (there is no message we're receiving)

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer...
You've gotta let me go

Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human... or are we dancer

Are we human, or are we dancer
Are we human, or are we dancer

When I first heard this song on the radio, I could not stand it and thought Cher was making a comeback. It seriously sounds like Cher.

I love this song so much. Especially the meaning.
It's like we're all the same, there are no
individuals.

"Sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door"

He's saying that he doesn't like to make
his own decisions (open doors).

"Are we human
Or are we dancer(s)"

(It is plural. You can hear it if you listen
closely} He's asking if we're individuals
who make mistakes (human), or if we're all
doing the same thing, same routine (dancers).

Third Stanza

In this, he's saying that he's grateful for
th life he has, that it's not really bad,
but he just wants to break free from it,
explore his differences a bit.

"There is no message we're reciving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?"

There's no one around for you to follow,
you have to be yourself. He's asking if
being different will kill you. Answer:
it won't.

Well, that's how I see it, anyway. Best Killers
song ever.

I think it's about someone who's dying, and wondering if there is an afterlife.

Clearly the context is a farewell:
"Pay my respects to grace and virtue, send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance, they always did the best they could
And so long to devotion you taught me everything I know
Wave good bye, wish me well, you gotta let me go"

And it's the singer himself who's departing, not someone else who's leaving, otherwise he would not be saying so long to grace, virtue, good, etc., things inherent to life itself. His vital signs are failing (his sign is vital), and of course his hands are cold, which is what people in the movies often say right before they die.

Further, as he's about to kick, he's on his way looking for the answer. What answer he's seeking is more obscure, but my guess is, he's asking if there's an afterlife. That is, are we are we merely physical beings, only meat, just human? In which case, when it's over it's over. Or else, are we transcendent beings, creatures made of light and beauty and action, a species of spirit the singer poetically calls dancer.

are we human or are we dancer.
"are we human" means do we live our own lives.
"or are we dancer" means or do we let people live our lives for us like do we let other people control or lives.

Brandon stated to listen to the verses and stop concentrating on the chorus ''are we human or are we dancer'' as it is a quote from a book.
"And sometimes I get nervous when I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart." I think he's saying when opportunities arise "an open door" it makes him anxious, because he's not sure if he should go for it and complete his own destiny, so he opens his mind and risks it.
He then goes into
"Are we human, or are we Dancer."
''Are we Human" - is every decision we make thought by ourselves to do something that effects our life.
"Are we dancer" - or is everything we do 'choreographed', are we just dancers being controlled by every move.
In the second verse he seems to be saying goodbye to all these things... as if he's going off to make his own path. He's been taught what he should be like by 'romance, good, grace and virtue etc.'
its just my opinion... but its a tricky one.

It's funny that you mention Cher daretorun for
two reasons

1.)because the person who submitted these is
sher
2.)it is also funny because yes it does
sound like Cher.

I usually like the Killers but this is crap.
I guess Dancer is a new breed of people otherwise
it would be dancers.LoL
I hate it being nonplural, Ergg!

It is dancer just the same way as he could say "Are we humans" but says "human" instead. He's making dancer a collective, implying we are all one.
