Would you please take me away
From this place
I cannot bear to see
The look upon your faces
And if there
Is some kind of god
Do you think he's pleased
When he looks down on us
I wonder what he sees
Do you think
He'd think the things we do
Are a waste of time
Maybe he'd think
We are getting on just fine
Do you think he's skint
Or financially secure
And come election time
I wonder who he'd vote for

[Chorus]
Ever since he can remember people
Have died in his good name
Long before that September
Long before hijacking planes
He's lost the will he can't decide
He doesn't know who's right or wrong
But there's one thing that he's sure
Of this has been going on too long

Do you think he'd drive
In his car without insurance
Now is he interesting
Or do you think he'd bore us
Do you think
His favorite type of human
Is Caucasian
Do you reckon
He's ever been done
For tax evasion
Do you think he's any good
At remembering people's names
Do you think he's ever taken
Smack or cocaine
I don't imagine
He's ever been suicidal
His favorite band
Is Creedence Clearwater Revival

[Chorus:Repeat x2]

General Comment:I don't understand why everyone is bring George W Bush into the discussion. Isn't Fuck You the George W Bush one? Anyway my take on the song is Lily is personifying God with the ponderings about whether God has ever taken drugs or drives without insurance. The chorus is lovely.

General Comment:A lot of people have been wondering why Lily Allen mentioned Creedence Clearwater Revival. Someone in an earlier post said that G.W. Bush's favorite band/one of his favorite songs is by this band, but also, CCR's most famous song is about the Vietnam War.

General Comment:I think this song is about how people say they do all these things and think all of these things because of their religious beliefs, but would God actually approve of any of it? Why would you use religion as an excuse to think you're better than everyone? And I think it's an amazing song, regardless of religious beliefs. It isn't criticizing or advocating any religion, but asking what you do with your religion.

General Comment:What I love about this song is that she gives god a personality. Instead of being this almighty figure, he is just like us. I heard this song at a time that I was doubting religion. I mean if we are all his children, then why do all these bad things keep happening?

General Comment:i'm not really here to discuss white v black or america v england. i'm just here to discuss the song meaning and that's what i'm going to do.
well, i'm not 100% sure of what this song is about, but from what i've heard i don't think it's partically litterally about George W Bush. actually, really i sort of do. that's confusing... but tbh i really think it is her singing about God, but it's sort of aimed at George. argh. let me explain.

Would you please take me away from this place
I cannot bear to see the look upon your faces
And if there is some kind of god do you think he's pleased
When he looks down on us I wonder what he sees

when God looks down at us, what does he see? as in, does he see a nicely run earth or a broken society?

Do you think he'd think the things we do are a waste of time
Maybe he'd think we are getting on just fine
Do you think he's skint or financially secure
And come election time I wonder who he'd vote for

who does he (God) think is right in this situation, as in is George right? who would he vote for? would he be supporting George in his actions?

Ever since he can remember people have died in his good name
    Long before that September
    Long before hijacking planes
He's lost the will he can't decide
He doesn't know who's right or wrong
But there's one thing that he's sure of this has been going on too long

a lot of people have died in his (God's) name before 9/11, before all of those big disasters. he has no idea who is right here, is it George? (sorry i'm not mentioning anyone else apart from George, i honestly don't know much about politics and such.) but one thing he definatly does know is that this whole distruction and war has been going on wayyyy too long.

Do you think he'd drive in his car without insurance
Now is he interesting or do you think he'd bore us
Do you think his favourite type of human is caucasian

the car insurance thing i'm not too sure about, but maybe she's saying is he (God) really that perfect like George wants us to be? & the caucasian thing - that's a bit obvious, is he for or against racism?

Do you reckon he's ever been done for tax evasion
Do you think he's any good at remembering people's names
Do you think he's ever taken smack or cocaine
    I don't imagine he's ever been suicidal
His favourite band is Creedence Clearwater Revival

the smack & cocaine, the suicidal thing and the tax thing is the same as the car insurance thing in my opinion (keep in mind i have no idea what evasion means...) & the names thing, i don't know. & i don't know anything about Creedence Clearwater Revival so i can't really say anything there.

yeah, that's my opinion on the song. i'm not religious, but i'm just saying what i think Lily is trying to say. i honestly don't know. anyway, i hope i was a help in some way...

General Comment:I think it is about GB. at first i thought is was about God, beause it does make sense and obviously seems like that at first glance, but if you think about what questions she's asking, they are all relevant to mistakes GB has made and issues that concern him. for example too, the question "Do you think he's skint or financially secure" couldn't relate to God. i do definitey see how it could be God, but i think that's the point, as someone said i think, to compare him and his superior status to that of Gods. really think about it, i think Lily intended for it to sound like God when it was actually about GB for people to slowly realise an go "hmm, that's clever" :)

General Comment:Honestly I think the George W. Bush reference couldn't be clearer. Bush is know as a sort of hillbilly, so Credence is the perfect band for him, and the September 11th reference is pretty clear: "long before that September, long before hijacking planes"...

As for God, I'm a faithful christian and I think she's referring to the fact that good is probably pretty disappointed in how we've done some things, or how we handle our problems.

Bush isn't exactly the best decision maker, so I think this is Lily's way of criticizing him. It's not a hate sort of thing, more of a wondering why he's like that and a hope he wouldn't be so pro-war.

General Comment:i think it's about how petty the things are that we can sent to jail for or fined for or things like that.
she's just saying how "god" is probably sitting there laughing at us and the way our whole world works.
like she's saying are you really such a BAD BAD person if you drive your car without insurance.
and also do you think he really wanted christians to be white or do you think he prefers other types of skin colour?
    dunno if im right.
