Lyrics for My Girls as interpreted by kstemz

My Girls Lyrics
Is it much to admit I need
A solid soul and the blood I bleed
With a little girl, and by my spouse
I only want a proper house

I don't care for fancy things
Or to take part in a precious race
And children cry for the one who has
A real big heart and a father's grace

I don't mean to seem like I care about material things like a social status
I just want four walls and adobe slabs for my girls

Brother is correct, I do believe.

And just a guess, but this will be the album of 2009.

I'm thinking that it might be "vicious race" but I can't really hear it clearly. I don't think precious makes much sense though. Not that all AC lyrics do, but this one's pretty clear cut.

pretty obvious that it's about what panda bear or whoever wrote it wants in life. a small family, and a good house for his wife and daughter to live in.

the chorus is amazing. so is the rest of the song.

on the album, the first line is definitely

"there isn't much that i feel i need"

i'm not sure but i think i hear:

"I don't care for fancy things
Or to take part in a 'vicious' race
And children cry for the 'man' who has
A real big heart and a father's grace"

and i agree that it sounds like "there isn't much that i feel i need" some of the words just aren't audible the first time he says them

or maybe "or to take part in a vicious way"
maybe?

I think it sounds most like "or to take part when the pressures weigh" like the version teamcooperuk posted.

I hear,

Isn't much I feel I need [or sometimes i think it says "Of you I need]
a silent soul [or solid] and the blood i bleed
with a little girl and by my spouse
i only want a proper house

....

or to take part in a vicious way? [race?]
.... to ask??
i will work hard for my mother's [something that rhymes with ace?]
i thought i heard on my mother's grave, on my mother's grave.... in the next couple lines...

There isn't much that I feel I need
A solid soul and the blood I bleed
With a little girl, and by my spouse
I only want a proper house

I don't care for fancy things
Or to take part in the vicious race
But to provide, for one who asks,
I will, with heart, on my father's grave

I don't mean
To seem like I care about material things
Like our social stats
I just want
Four walls and adobe slats
For my girls

beautiful. i love how they're writing more about family and home now that they've got them. it shows such maturity and grace without ever once taking away from animal collective's essence. i fucking love them.

Okay, this is my song of 2009 so far. Very hard to beat on its studio version, which is the summit of perfection.
I'm pretty sure it's "on my father's grave". Noah's father died a couple of years ago, and Noah is known for writing very autobiographical lyrics (all of "Young Prayer", Take Pills, Bro's, Brother Sport etc). I think he's promising on his father's grave that he'll do well with his family.

So.... here's a question. What the hell does he mean by "adobe slabs?" What are these said adobe slabs exactly?

I thought maybe he was saying adobe FLATS... I dunno, my mind is just trying to make a little sense out of it...

I always want to clap after that "Owww!", it's so good. I agree with Madcow, i think Panda wrote it about his wife/daughter? It's such a great song. My favorite song of 2009 so far.

with so many other AC songs spewing absurd groupings of words, this is one that actually comes off blunt and direct in every way. With the group now growing and starting families, this tune is a reflection on domesticated lifestyle that's to come, and the minimal requirements they aspire to have: contentment with self, wife and children that live well and happy, and a place to rest bones at the end of the day. nothing extravagant or sublime, just the standard house-that-can-be-called-a-home type of deal. Adobe is one of the more basic substances used to build houses and has been around for thousands of years, so it seems like what's going on inside the house is more important thn its actual appearance.

the one line of note I find interesting is that they refer to their social status as a "material thing." maybe that classification goes beyond the average definition of material, as if social status is a reflection of the material things they may have, and therefore is of no importance. either way, a gem of many sorts and one of the stronger numbers on Merriweather.

adobe slabs refers to building a home from the ground up like way back in the day. basically stating that as father he's going to work hard in providing for his children. but yes i agree that while most animal collective songs are a little difficult to interpret on the first try, this one is way easy to understand. its in general a song about a man providing for his family and making his father proud in the process. such a great song though! i got this album early and i cant stop listening to it. its fantastic!
