Lyrics for Taste as interpreted by enjoyyourroots

Taste Lyrics
We'll feel sublime.

Am I really all the things that are outside of me?
Would I complete myself without the things I like around?
Does the music that I make play on my awkward face?
Do you appreciate the subtleties of taste buds?

My friend and me were having laughs
In a living room filled with arts and crafts
He said "I like their clothes and their charming ways,
But what I really want is a simple place,
With no fashion clothes 'cause you can eat those"

Only Ma'd pretend to like the clothes you showed to me,
Something in my heart can tell me it's a weakness,
And maybe you will have more luck playing those tasty games,
But me, I called and called and never heard from her again.

She's too good to share our favorite things,
I'll keep an open mind if you let me in.
Don't let your temper rise, don't get a bitter face.
Try not to judge me on my kind of taste.
And don't go changing clothes when they don't like yours.

Am I really all the things that are outside of me?

these lyrics are wrong. just saying. this might be right for a live version but the studio version is very different.

yes allofmylove. we know that.

now instead of just saying they're wrong, how about you try and figure out what they really are.

okay, here's what i got loosely by listening to the song, some of it is pretty layered so i couldn't interpret it well. so it's probably wrong. feel feel to correct/add on.

am i really all the things that are outside of me?
would i complete myself without the things i like around?
does the music that i make play off my awkward stage?
do you appreciate the sublteties of tastebuds?

(??)
in our living room
filled with thoughts and grass(?)
you said that i like their clothes and their (?)
but what i really want is a simple place
with no fancy clothes(or groves?) cause you can't eat those

i only want to like the clothes you showed to me
something in my heart tells me it's a weakness
and maybe you have had more play in those tasty games
but me, i called and called and never heard from her again

(?) to share all different things
i keep an open mind, if you let me in
(?????????????????? i have no idea ?????????????????)

am i really all the things that are outside of me? (x8)

"met my friend and we were havin (something...maybe "a laugh") in our living room filled with arts and crafts"
"with no special clothes cause you can't eat those"
and the one line in the first verse I gathered more something like "does the music that I make play on my awful stage". maybe, not sure about the last word though
the rest you figured out I agree with

Merriweather Post Pavilion is a fantastic album. And this song is the best on the album in my opinion.
Second place is Bluish and third is Summertime Clothes

official

There's a secret place I hide that's deep inside of me
An elusive voice that tells me what I like now
You might think I'm going to judge you in your fancy place
I don't really give the credit to what taste does
Cause I don't care if you don't like that
You'll get your feelings hurt, but I'll forget its bad
And if I like you it's for your simple ways
And we will always be at a tasty place
And you can cook a rose but I don't eat those

(Taste, yeah it's the taste)
Taste

Doll, I dearly tried to like the clothes you chose for me
Something in my heart can tell me it's a weakness
But I got shocked and picked some flowers since you wouldn't dare
Take a woman's blouse and send it for your son to wear.
But when we share our important views
You get a glimpse of me, I get a glimpse of you
And I don't really care if I don't change your ways
If you won't always be at our tasty place
And you can cook a rose but I don't eat those

(Taste, yeah it's the taste)
Taste

Am I really all the things that are outside of me

Am I real

this song is about being yourself.. I think the "Things" outside of me are other people's judgments, not material things at all.
"Would I complete myself without the things I like around?" I think is talking about people that the singer likes..including someone he cares about romantically.

In the third verse it becomes clear that something is wrong with the singer and his girl. The reference to 'clothes' (which appears several times in the song) is about the image of ourselves that we present to the everyone else. So "Only Ma'd pretend to like the clothes you showed to me" is saying something about how his girl is making him show/be a different person than the one that is really inside of him. The second to last line "And don't go changing clothes when they don't like yours" sounds like advice. The singer realizes he cannot change who he is for another person (nor should he have to).
The last line though is thoughtful...does how other people see you define who you are? I sure hope not

I love this song and Animal Collective...try not to judge me on my kind of taste

The "things" outside of him, are literally all the "things", material subject, outside of him...
He's speaking of taste as style whether it be clothing, art, or anything at all.
He is just tired of everyone being so judgemental.
and his response is "Am I really all the things that are outside of me?"

maybe we are. but i sure hope not.

given animal collective's often disagreement with fans, i really think the "things outside of" them are the fans... asking if these uber-obsessive freaks who fake emails and assume so much are really the end result of the art they compose.

I think the end of the first verse is worded a bit differently:
"Do you appreciate the subtleties of taste, Bud?"

You people sure do, if you like AC that is.

P.S. don't call me 'Buddy,' Guy...
