Dear Jack
I'll write you as a friend
Dear Friend
I write I fear the end is coming soon
To you it's not so clear
It's clear to me
It's clear as glass
Dear Jack (x2)
Dear Hope
Attach it to the end of your rope
A rope that wove ambition in with sorrow
Distancing tommorow, tomorrows come and past
Dear Jack (x2)

You were the fighter
I was the kid against the world
I heard theres nothing gonna hold you down
I'll use a lighter so you can see what isn't there
We'll swing at air
Swinging off eventually you're bound
Bound to the ground

Dear Jack
Wherever you are hold tight
Wherever he is shine light right there
Be strong I dare
I know it's hard but I will wait
I will wait, yeah

You were the fighter
I was the kid against the world
I heard theres nothing gonna hold you down
I'll use a lighter so you can see what isnt there
We'll swing at air
Swinging off eventually you're bound
You're bound to the ground

I, I had songs for you
I had all your music written out
The words came when I heard you screaming
I, I, I, I had plans for you
Until the plans fell through
Now there is no turning back my dear jack

You were the fighter
I was the kid against the world
I heard theres nothing gonna hold you down
I'll use a lighter so you can see what isn't there
We'll swing at air
Swinging off eventually you're bound
You're bound to the ground
And oh, oh, oh
We're bound to the ground
bound to the ground
We're bound to the ground

I think its saying how this band was on it's way, obviously named for jack.
He had the inspiration to write music for Jack's Mannequin when he saw what Jack was going through.
He had plans for the band, until he found out he had cancer, everything was put on hold. This song is for Jack, and therefore includes the band Jack's Mannequin in its meaning.

My Opinion:I agree with SwimFan4her... To me, this song is almost written to himself. Like he is referring to Jack's Mannequin, his solo identity. Though i know the song is referencing his friend who had previously had cancer I still think there is a double meaning there. It becomes especially obvious when he says "I, I had songs for you
I had all your music written out," meaning he had big plans for Jack's Mannequin that he fears will never happen because of his cancer. It also makes sense since his album was already near finish and release right when he found out about his cancer.

My Interpretation:Even though I know this is completely wrong, one could interpret this a totally different way. Before I knew it was for his kid brother's freind...I thought It was Andrew singing to the band "Jack's Mannequin"...kind of like the band was a whole person. Lines like:

"I, I had songs for you
I had all your music written out
The words came when I heard you screaming
    I, I, I, I had plans for you
    Until the plans fell through
Now there is no turning back my dear jack"

Jack's Mannequin debut album was already written and recorded and then McMahon found out he had leukemia...and everything was put on hold...promoting, tour dates, etc...

    I dont know...just a thought.

General Comment:Are we sure that Jack's the little kid who got cancer? I watched Andrew's documentary, also named Dear Jack, and towards the end of the film, the narrator said, "Present at Andrew's wedding was his dear friend, Jack". And there was a picture displayed of a guy who looked about Andrew's age. As far as I know, Jack's a friend who had a little brother who died of leukemia.

    Hope to have this confirmed!

General Comment:this song was written before Andrew got leukemia. It is where the name Jack's Mannequin comes from, but it didn't make the cut for Everything In Transit.

this is why I can't figure out what it means. It was from before he was sick....

General Comment:Ohhhh my. i am so unhealthily obsessed with andrew mcmahon. I have been waiting for his really good stuff to come out and I'm so happy that Dear Jack (the documentary) and the ep came out. He is truly a piano genius. And the way he feels about Jack (the Jack behind Jack's mannequin) just makes me tear up. I cried listening to this for the first time.
