Out where the stones lay like bones by the ocean
Out where the waves crash contempt on the land
Someone was trembling for fear of the tempest
Somebody silently reached for their hand
Said, understand that if you're cold I'll keep you warm
And besides, there's so much beauty in a storm
So come down with me to the shore
And what's more, I adore you
So tell me, what is there to fear
You think some seraph up above is trying to rob us of our love
Because the sky's not clear
My dear, you know there's not
Now listen to the rain upon the rooftop
But the wind picked up

Out where the stones stand up like thrones beside the ocean
Out where the waves make a grave of the sea
The lovers struggled in the middle of the tempest
And water angrily crawled up onto the beach
Said, hold my hand and stay with me
We'll be released
But the tide clung like an anchor to her feet
And though he tried to make the water line recede
It pulled her out into the sea
He could not break apart the waves to bring her safely back in
He watched her hand break through the surface once
Then disappear again
Forever wait inside the sea for my, my dear
I hear you
You speak in every curling wave
And sing in every violent breeze
Someday not far away from here
My dear, I swear I'll see you
And we will hear the seraphs cry
For they will still envy you and I
How they envied you and I
How they envied you and I
How they envied you and I

General Comment:To me, this is about trying to love someone who's horribly depressed. The woman is the one who's mentally ill and her lover wants to be able to help her, to fix her. But her illlness overcomes her. She commits suicide or just loses touch with reality completely despite his best efforts. The sea, her depression pulls her out. And perhaps she is dead or she is just gone, but there is nothing he can do to help her.
From personal experience, this song fits trying to love a depressed person perfectly. It's heartbreaking.

My Opinion:Such a vivid picture. This is the most beautiful extended metaphor ive come across in a song.

General Comment:If this song is parallel to Edgar Allen Poe's "Annabel Lee" (which seems to be true) the tragedy that took her--the sea--would be Tuberculosis which led to the demise of several key individuals in Poe's life.

My Interpretation:First things first,I love how the majority of the people express their opinion of what the song means on here, and do so in a respectable manner.

My honest interpretation of the song is that in the beginning, the man is deeply pessimistic and lost. And a girl shows up and rids him of this sorrow, and begins to make him happy. Yet, alas, she is caught up within the constant current of the world, the everflowing change, and she leaves him. And he hopes she will take the same advice she once gave him, and return.

General Comment:This song, this album, this band is just sick. The best band that I have discovered this year!!! The album is about the guy being afraid that his wife will be taken from him by another man like his previous wife was (the previous wife part is seen in Damaged goods) and it turns out being true as his fear pushes his wife away and she ends up leaving him. Moral: Don't let your fear your god.

One of my favorite albums of all time!!!

General Comment:From what i heard, this song is a true story (the whole album "Somewhere at the bottom of the river
between Vega and Altair", actually) of his
    wife, the love of his life, drowning in front of him. This album was dedicated to her;
he mentions her in "such small hands"... "in think i saw you in my sleep, darling."
    he's mourning for her. :(
and in "last blues for bloody knuckles"?..."My precious WIFE, i am in shambles, i am crumbling, i am"

General Comment:My favourate song, it is based on the poem 'Annabeel Lee' by Edgar Allen Poe, and it links with the song they made called 'three', in the song three, (which you can find on youtube) he acualy uses loads of the same lines as Poe did in the poem, you can find the poem by typing annabell lee into google. Before i looked on here i thought in the first stanza it was the boy (the singer) who was telling the girl 'there is so much beauty in a storm' and all the other dialog and i still do think it is the singer saying it.

General Comment:I agree that this is a metaphor but I think she still dies. She helped him through difficult times and they fell in love.

I have two ideas about the meaning to this though:

I think she could have commited suicide. Either she went through something difficult and he didn't help her or she didn't tell him and she couldn't take it anymore. With all the references about the ocean, I would say she drowned.

    Or

She died when they were most in love. Probably murdered. The storm could be when they found her but then:
'He watched her hand break through the surface once
    Then disappear again'
There was a moment where they thought she might live but she didn't.
The whole way through the song he seems to love her and when she dies, he loves her even more.
    He says:
'Someday not far away from here
My dear, I swear I'll see you'
He believes his love for her will bring them back together one day
'And we will hear the seraphs cry
For they will still envy you and I'
He believes even the angels will be jelous of the amount of love they have for eachother.

In my opinion, this song is beautiful, a great metaphoric story of love and death <3

My Opinion:I love the song until:
"Forever wait inside the sea for my, my dear
    I hear you
You speak in every curling wave
And sing in every violent breeze
Someday not far away from here"
That just seems a little cliche to me. Maybe because I don't know how to love.
