Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
The one who can't recall
Where she was while she was sleeping
In another woman's bed
Or the doctors or the lawyers
Or a stranger that she met
If there's nothing I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me
When I thought I've heard it all

It was a long time with you
It was a long time with me
It'd be a long time for anyone
But looks like it's meant to be

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way to your next call
To those non-negotiations
To simulate a call
For the betterment of evils and your ways around the laws that keep you
Up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of men
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near the man who you gave head

If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was a wrong time for you
It was a wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone
But looks like I'm about to see for myself

If I could go back in time to the place in my soul, there all alone
Lonely tear drops
Ooh, are calling you
But I don't wanna know it now
'Cause knowing you, it won't change a damn thing
But there was a time

Yeah, there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now

Yeah, there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now

Oh
I would do anything for you
There was a time
I would do anything for you
I would do anything for you
There was a time

There was a time
Oh, I would do anything for you
Oh, I would do anything for you
Yeah there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now
I would do anything for you (didn't wanna know, at all)
(Didn't wanna know, at all, and I don't wanna know it now)

There was a time, was a time

This was one of the few decent songs on "Chinese Democracy", an album that was otherwise a piece of garbage. Buckethead is an amazing guitarist, and I will not slight him for his time in the band. Axl needs to quit being such a controlfreak/diva, and bury the hatchet with Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Matt, and do a reunion of the classic GnR. The album took too long to come out, and fans basically gave up on the band. If it had come out when the original line up was still together, the album would have been simply mind blowing...like "Appetite for Destruction" had been in 1987. I can see how the song could easily be about a person in relationship where he or she is getting cheated on.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
