Lyrics for I Can't Stay as interpreted by jeremygrim

I Can't Stay Lyrics
The emotion it was, electric
And the stars, they all aligned
I knew I had to make my, decision
But I never made the time
No, I never made the time

In the dark, for a while now
I can't stay, so far
I can't stay, much longer
Riding my decision home

Exoneration lost his, eraser
But my forgiver found the sun
And there are twisted days that I take comfort
Cause I'm not the only one
No, I'm not the only one

In the dark, for a while now
I can't stay, very far
I can't stay, much longer
Riding my decision home

There is a majesty at my doorstep
There is a little boy in her arms
Now we'll parade around without game plans
Obligations, or alarm

In the dark, for a while now
I can't stay, very far
I can't stay, much longer
Riding my decision home

In the dark, for a while now
I can't stay, so far
I can't stay, much longer
Riding my decision home
In the dark

I think it's about a parent abandoning their kid maybe? Or just getting a girl pregnant on accident.

I think this song seems to be about Brandon and life on the road. He seems to want to come back home to his wife (a majesty) and his son (a little boy in her arms).

But he's made his decision to make this band his lifestyle, and now he's making his way home from a tour.

I agree with John, it seems that Brandon is telling us, the fans, that he can't stay on tour/on the road all the time because his wife and child are waiting for him back home.

I love this song very much. It has a gorgeous melody, and the lyrics are definitely more raw and personal than previous songs.

I don't think he is referring to his life on the road as "dark". I think that "in the dark" part he is referring to his inner struggle for a big part of his life and how things have changed now that he has people counting on him. That's what I think that the "There is a majesty at my doorstep, There is a little boy in her arms" means.

what the hell with the music!! and the harpsichord!?
it's just weird. it seems to me like this song could be a really good soundtrack for the lion king or something.
the last minute of the song seems to me too uncommonly repetitive and monotonous, i cant help skipping the song at that part.

the lyrics to me, mean an affair (Exoneration lost his, eraser
But my forgiver found the sun
And there are twisted days that I take comfort
Cause I'm not the only one
No, I'm not the only one),
the narrator is married but he has a "lover" and a kid, he thinks for a looong while and decides that he cant go with them, he has to do what's right and goes back home.
its just my thoughts tho.

this is definitely a different killers song. in fact, it doesn't sound a quintessential killers song at all. but i like it. it works. and brandon's voice is just beautiful

This song is about a Little Mermaid who used to live Under the Sea with eletric eels and who made a decision to go to the surface. So, she made a deal with a dark witch, which had drove her away from home, since she was exonerated by her father, the Atlantis' majesty himself. And she was sad and took comfort with her friends... And then she saved a little boy from drowning and she fell in love.

The song is inconclusive. Therefore, it is to be continued.

So obvious! :P

I think this one's a great song. This is my vision of the song (drawn from my own experience):

I was with my ex. We were speechless, situation was electric. We couldn't utter a word. We felt we were in the dark for a long time. So I went home, with the decision to clear my mind. But, driving home, I realized I should have said something. So, as I got home, I prayed (that's the mother and the child), to find some comfort.

I have two interpretations. I think this song could be about the loneliness associated with touring and, for Brandon, leaving behind his wife and son. Alternately I think the the song is the story of an unnamed bachelor who is fooling around with a girl in a non-committal, "Alfie" sort of way. But then he's forced to make a decision about being with her, in a real relationship, or being single, perhaps because she just told him that she is pregnant or has had his child. And he's sort of torn about that decision.

Aw man, now I'm torn. This song is brilliant and my favorite of the entire albumn! The "being on the road" thing sounds probable but this is my origional interpretation anyway and I think it's more probable given the double meaning of the lyrics:

I think it's a song about cheating!

The emotion being electric and the stars aligning refer to his lover as being a good match for him (their 'signs' or whatever)...
Having to make a decision is obvious and riding it home (aka following through with it)....

"Exoneration: to clear of accusation or relieve of obligation"... so either there's no way he can be free from the blame since the deed is done OR he sees no way to truly be freed from his obligation for his family... or both

Then there's the awesome play-on-words with "No, I'm not the only one... in the dark for awhile now".... as in his spouse (the magesty with the boy) has "been in the dark" about his affair for awhile now

The the bridge is her waiting with the son on the doorstep perhaps? "My forgiver found the sun" from before perhaps implies that she became enlightened of the adultry situation. But now that the issue is addressed they can run around free of the guilt of his cheating.... or at least he's hoping? Maybe he's picturing this as he's driving home.....

Aaaand, the last is maybe just trying to "hit home" that he's driving back... in the dark. Haha.

ps. I love this song! Makes me want to be in a warm warm place :)

I'm sure I read somewhere that is simply is just about his family and basically what everyone's already said. Just saw the Killers perform this at the O2 Arena, it was class! Favourite song on my favourite Killers album.

As just about the majority of the other people responding to this song, I think it's Flowers' reflection on how touring affects his family life. However, I think it focuses more on his guilt at having to leave his family at home every time he goes on tour with the band, and how hard it is to leave when the time comes.

With the bridge, he's talking about the family waiting for him to come home, and how he misses the lack of schedule and organization there, as opposed to how his days on tour are dictated by time and order and urgency (game plans, obligations or alarm.)

I love this song. It's one of my favorites. It's just so cleanly instrumented, and it's heartrending at times, because (I think) the way he expresses his feelings in the song tug at my heartstrings.

I may be way off - but I see this song as having religious imagery - "There's a majesty at my doorstep...". It seems there is an inner struggle between living a lifestyle that doesn't necessarily fit in with his faith. He's "not the only one" - but he knows that's just an excuse and he's not sure how long he can remain "in the dark".

Okay so chaseyA is correct. This song is about his religious beliefs and feelings. It is about how the life style he was living before he met his wife wasn't in line with his religious beliefs. Thats what "in the dark" is about, in a dark place. It talks about making a choice to give up bad habits etc, to come back to the light. The lyric "my forgiver found the sun" is wrong, it is "my forgiver found a son" He is talking about Jesus as his forgiver and how Brandon is now God's son. I was at the killers show in seattle and when he sang that line he looked straight up towards the ceiling. The majesty is his wife and their little boy in her arms.
