Lyrics for Dog Days Are Over as interpreted by x-orange-x

Dog Days Are Over Lyrics
Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your loving, your loving behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

And i never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh
Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head
Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your loving, your loving behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

The humdrum drudgery's done and the good times are here at last! But be quick! Grab it while you can and leave everything else behind.

So lets all dress up, go in to the woods and dance.

This is my FAVOURITE song at the moment! i absolutely adore florence.

i interpret this song about her falling in love really quickly 'happiness hit her like a train on a track' i think something then happens in the relationship, maybe he cheated on her so tries to forget the love she had and felt 'she hid around corners..'

i think that 'the dog days' are the times when she felt low and like she wouldnt get over him and the 'run fast..' verse is about remembering your family and that they can get you through anything

AN AMAZING SONG!

i love this song, but it sucks.

because happiness doesn't just hit you like a bullet in the head. you wait around for it forever, meanwhile enduring the dog days for who knows how long.

This song is brillant. I love dancing to it.

I love it because it has so much meaning. Happiness really does hit you like a train after hard times.

"The dogs days" are the horrible things in life that happen and tramatise us, and at some point you have to let go to move on and change your own future. Ie: allow a person to love you and be happy, (life doesn't have to be loveless)

"Run back" run back repair the damage. The future is bright with the horses comming.

This song sums up my whole life and tells me to let go and move on to better and bigger things

The phrase 'dog days' means a period of madness (originally because when it got too hot in summer all wine and
milk would go bad, dogs and people would go nuts, you get the jist) from my understanding of the lyrics, its
about running from something bad, it sounds to me like a girl with a violent or aggressive partner she loved to
bits, 'she hid around corners and she hid under beds, she killed it wth kisses and from it she fled' i presume the happiness hitting her is the moment she realises she can escape the horrible life she has with this person who she may have been too
frightened to leave before becuase she loved them.... 'Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head...
Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that' running for all the other members of your family is a way of remembering other people love you, being that florence has sang other songs about violent relationships i think this might be right. let me know what you think people iots been bothering me for weeks... btw.. beautiful song!!

I definitely think it's that she's been depressed/in a shitty situation for a while, and she finally feels she has the strength to overcome it...it's a very positive song to me. Lovely.

I think it could possibly be the opposite. I think it's about someone who's so afraid of love that they run all the time and hide from it. To have feeling's for someone has hit them "like a train on a track". They kiss it and flee again because that's how close they're willing to get. Like when there's a room you're afraid to go in or don't know what's in it, you might push the door open and jump back before you look in. Or a kiss is all they're willing to give of themselves as they see loving someone as a weakness and leaves it all behind because they think that's how they'll survive in life. Just a thought.

I like it that so many found such happiness in this song, and I applaud you for it. First thing I thought of, though, are the Native Americans. The dog days were good times. The horses are coming - the Spaniards - so you'd better run. Won't bum anyone out with the rest of my interpretation, except to say that I'd rather not have happiness hit me like a bullet from a great height by someone who should have known better.

Peace

I think that the dog days are representational of her living a generally bad, unhappy life, and suddenly happiness hits her in the form of falling in love. But shes scared of this happiness and falling in love incase she has to go back to these dog days. A beautiful song :)

For me this is about having spent a lot of time in a sort of daze, maybe locked in some sort of routine, and having something happen and suddenly looking around and realizing that the world is in technicolor and that you have this happiness that you have to seize.

As far as interpretation goes, I can't help but agree with kokostar.

"Leave all your longing and loving behind, You can't carry it with you if you want to survive."

It almost sounds to me like the speaker in the song is telling us how much ov an inconvenience love is in general, and how (rationally speaking) we'd be better off without it considering the pain that it can bring. Furthermore, happiness isn't usually compared to a "bullet in the head" which leads me to believe that the song is about running away from happiness that can so easily be taken away.

I also think that things seem too good to be true (to the speaker in the song), and so the solution is to run away. In running away while "the dog days are over" and happiness has struck, that happiness will be preserved; the speaker isn't there to witness things go bad. So the speaker "run[s] fast" for all her loved ones.

So yes. There you have it. My own two cents. =)

to me i believe that happiness hit her like a train on a track and like a bullet in the back means it hit her with such force. the force caused pain but she couldn't get away from it so she hid from it. the horses are coming to scare the dog days away and better days are coming. it's about bad love i think. you have to leave the love and longing for this person behind because he isn't good. you have to run for all the people that care for you. get away for them.

it's a really deep and beautiful song.

To me she was hesitant of love in the first place, but someone came along and BAM it all just happened and there was nothing she could do and it made her really happy. But then it stopped working for whatever reason, and so now she's running again.

To me it's sorta sad in that this person wants to avoid love/being hurt, but at the same time it feels like such a liberating song. Like maybe this person just wants to need themselves.

you know, i think this song is about falling in love and not wanting to be. "happiness hit her like a train on a track" - she got caught in the headlights of it, and got "stuck still, no turning back". it goes on to say how she tries to run from it and eventually she succeeds and washes it away down the sink, although just as that happens, she realises what a great thing she had and how much she depended on it: "And i never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too"

well, thats what i reckon =]

To me, it's about falling in love and how love can't be evaded, and also how infatuation can (temporarily) liberate you from a boring and mundane life. ^_^ So beautiful. Looooooooove Florence.

I see it as.... Hapiness was love, and she tried to hide from it, because she didn't want to be in love.. But she couldn't stop it from happening.. And it made her happy, but at the same time, something wasn't working... And the happiness faded... And from that, she ran... She ran to find happiness and protection elsewhere...
In the end, I think she's saying she thought she was happy with him, but she wasn't... The dog days were really with him, and now they're over...

I also think she uses similie's such as "train on a track" and "Bullet in the head" to say that it hit her fast and hard, and, in the end, brought her down... It wasn't a good thing.. It could have almost killed her..

But hey, tht's just my interpretation {:
Cheers x

Hey guys, I used to think like you, but it came so obvious to me this morning. This song isn't about love or happiness. If anything, it's about a lack of it and the principal theme is suicide. If happiness comes like a train on the track or a bullet in the head, it might just not be a metaphore.

Also, leave all your lovings behind? Oh and most important :

"With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink"

Alcoholic / bulimic ?

I mean, just the think of what someone who loves you would tell you if you wrote "Happiness hits like a bullet in the head" all your agenda in high school.

Just sayin'
