I’ve made you promises a thousand times
I’ve tried to hear from heaven
But I talk the whole time
I think I made you too small
I’ve never feared you at all, no
If you touched my face would I know you
Looked into my eyes could I behold you
What do I know of you
Who spoke me into motion
Where have I even stood
But the shore along your ocean
Are you fire, are you fury
Are you sacred, are you beautiful
So what do I know
What do I know of holy
I guess I thought that I had you figured out
I knew all the stories and I learned to talk about
How you were mighty to save
But those were only empty words on a page
Then I caught a glimpse of who you might be
The slightest hint of you brought me down to my knees
What do I know of you
Who spoke me into motion
Where have I even stood
But the shore along your ocean
Are you fire, are you fury
Are you sacred, are you beautiful
So what do I know
What do I know of holy
What do I know of Holy
What do I know of wounds that will heal my shame
And a God who gave life its name
What do I know of Holy
Of the One who the angels praise
All creation knows your name
On earth and heaven above
What do I know of this love
What do I know of you
Who spoke me into motion
Where have I even stood
But the shore along your ocean
Are you fire, are you fury
Are you sacred, are you beautiful
So what do I know
What do I know of holy
I’ve tried to hear from heaven
But I talk the whole time
I think I made you too small
I’ve never feared you at all, no
If you touched my face would I know you
Looked into my eyes could I behold you
What do I know of you

I guess I thought that I had you figured out

I was reading 1 Samuel about 2 weeks ago and really struggling with faith. I spoke with a friend and came to the conclusion that my view of God was so limited and really hindering my relationship with Him. I decided that night to begin in Genesis and keep a journal referencing every place that describes who God is.
This song couldn't fit more perfectly into my journey. I have literally asked myself time after time while reading "What do I know?" I think sometimes our own arrogance causes us to assume God fits in our box. He doesn't.
Francis Chan points in "Crazy Love" that we question God in our arrogance asking things like "Why would you let people in the world starve? Why don't you feed them?" God has more of a right to ask us why they're starving. He's God. He is all-powerful, always-in-control, merciful and loving, but also to be feared. He has no doubts of who he is. I think this song really confronts how wrong we get it sometimes.
But that's just me.
I think it might already be changing my life.
As to the meaning of it, I think Jenny is really trying to just say how God is so much bigger than we even think. His love is all encompassing and sometimes we forget that. It's easy to become complacent and forget the role God plays in our life, but then something happens and we remember. We remember how much we need Him.

No words could describe my feelings toward my Lord and Savior the way this does
Looked good, just 2 words switched up..

*****I guess I thought that I had figured you out.
My friend and I were talking about this song yesterday, when she wrote this song, it was obvious she was being open and truthful. I'm a christian and I try my hardest to live my life for Christ, the way He would want it to be lived. and I feel the same way. When I sing this song I sing it from my heart.
BRILLIANT and BEAUTIFUL.
