I'm five years old
It's getting cold
I've got my big coat on
I hear your laugh
And look up smiling at you
I run and run
Past the pumpkin patch
And the tractor rides
Look now, the sky is gold
I hug your legs
And fall asleep on the way home
I don't know why all the trees change in the fall
But I know you're not scared of anything at all
Don't know if Snow White's house is near or far away
But I know I had the best day with you today
I'm thirteen now
And don't know how
My friends could be so mean
I come home crying
And you hold me tight
And grab the keys
And we drive and drive
Until we found a town far enough away
And we talk and window shop
'Till I forgotten all their names
I don't know who I'm gonna talk to now at school
But I know I'm laughing
On the car ride home with you
Don't know how long it's gonna take to feel okay
But I know I had the best day with you today
I have an excellent father
His strength is making me stronger
God smiles on my little brother
Inside and out he's better than I am
I grew up in a pretty house
And I've got space to run and hide
And I had the best days with you
There is a video I found
From back when I was three
You set up a paint set in the kitchen
And you're talking to me
It's the age of princesses and pirate ships
And the seven dwarfs
And Daddy's smart
And you're the prettiest lady in the whole wide world
And now I know why the all the trees change in the fall
I know you were on my side
Even when I was wrong
And I love you for giving me your eyes
Staying back and watching me shine
And, I didn't know if you knew
So I'm taking this chance to say
That I had the best day with you today.
It's getting cold
I've got my big coat on
I hear your laugh
And look up smiling at you
I run and run
Past the pumpkin patch

Look now, the sky is gold

The country star told CMT Radio the story of this song, which she wrote out on the road and kept as a secret from her mom until Christmas. Swift explained: "In the first verse, I was talking about being 5 years old, so as a writer, it was really fun to go back to that place of the way that I used to talk when I was 5. I wrote the song from that perspective, and I starting thinking, 'What would I be thinking if I was 5 and I was remembering this?' And it goes, 'I'm 5 years old/It's getting cold and I've got my big coat on.' It had language like that - that makes me really think back to that time. I actually wrote that song without telling my mom and recorded it without telling my mom. Complete secret session. Then I got the track back and synced up all these home videos of me when I was a little kid and made this video and played it for my mom on Christmas and said, 'Merry Christmas!' She had no idea that it was me singing for the first half of the song. And then she just broke down crying when she realized I had done this whole thing to surprise her. It was a really cool moment."
Taylor had to drop this touching song from her Fearless tour set list as her mother burst into tears backstage every time she heard it. Andrea explained, "She had to drop it from the set because I kept breaking down."
It's so beautiful.
I love the line, "I'm thirteen now and don't know how my friends could be so mean."
A few weeks after I left my dads family, my stepmum found out she had a brain tumour. It was the most stressfull time for my little brother and my dad and I wasn't there to support them, it was such an awful thing I did completely walking out of their lives at a time like that. She had an operation to remove it and thank god she's alive and well.
That was back in December, now 5 months on, today I came back to visit them. I had the most wonderful day, remembering what it used to be like in this house, the 4 of us, and how back then was the last time I was truly happy. It's 3am and I'm listening to this song. It's about today, how it was the best day to spend with my family who I miss so much.
The lyrics "I'm 13 now. I have an excellent father, his strength is making me stronger. God smiles on my little brother, inside and out he's better than I am. I grew up in a pretty house and I had space to run and I, had the best days with you. There is a video from back when I was 3. Daddy is smart and my stepmums the prettiest lady in the whole wide world. I know you were on my side even when I was wrong. My dad did give me my eyes. You stood back and watched me shine, and I know you were on my side even when I was wrong." are all 100% true.
I may not see my family again for another long period of time, but this song makes me so grateful for today, after how I behaved. Karma comes back around, and now "I know why all the trees change in the fall." :)
In the second verse, she recalls being 13. She comes home from school crying because her friends hurt her. The two of them drive around and talk, and Taylor is glad to be with her mom. She doesn't know how things will blow over with her friendship problems, but she knows that her mom is always there for her, and that things will be okay.
Taylor says that she's now older and wiser, but she still needs her mom. She thanks her for always being supportive and helping her through it all.
Inside and out hes better than I am"
What do these lines mean? Obviously she's praising her brother, but "he's better than I am"?
