Once upon a time I believe it was a Tuesday when I caught your eye
We caught onto something, I hold on to the night
You looked me in the eye and told me you loved me
Were you just kidding cause it seems to me
This thing is breaking down we almost never speak
I dont feel welcome anymore, baby what happened please tell me
Cause one second it was perfect and now youre half way out the door
And I stare at the phone and he still hasnt called
And you feel so low you cant feel nothin at all
And you flash back to when he said forever and always
Ohh ohhh
And it rains in your bedroom everything is wrong
It rains when youre here and it rains when youre gone
Cause I was there when you said forever and always
Was I out of line did I say something way too honest
That made you run and hide like a scared little boy
I looked into your eyes; thought I knew you for a minute
now Im not so sure
So heres to everything coming down to nothing
Heres to silence that cuts me to the core
Where is this going, thought I knew for a minute
but I dont anymore
And I stare at the phone and he still hasnt called
And you feel so low you cant feel nothin at all
And you flash back to when he said forever and always
Ohh ohhh
And it rains in your bedroom everything is wrong
It rains when youre here and it rains when youre gone
Cause I was there when you said forever and always
You didnt mean it baby, I dont think so
Ohhh ohhhh
Oh back up, baby back up, did you forget everything
back up, baby back up, did you forget everything
Cause it rains in your bedroom everything is wrong
It rains when youre here and it rains when youre gone
Cause I was there when you said forever and always
ohhh
I stare at the phone and he still hasnt called
And you feel so low you cant feel nothing at all
And you flash back to when we said forever and always

Swift told The Los Angeles Times that on this song, she felt as though she achieved something authentic and raw. She explained: "When I go into the studio, it's really more about portraying the song in a way that gets the feeling across, rather than every phrase being exactly perfect. I think it's the writer in me that's a little more obsessed with the meaning of the song than the vocal technique. All that stuff is like math to me. Over-thinking vocals and stuff - I never want to get to that point."
Swift wrote this near the end of the recording process after she broke up with Joe Jonas. The singer had to plead with the president of her record label, Scott Borchetta, to let her add it to the album a day before the final version was due to be turned in.
Joe Jonas told the June 2009 issue of Seventeen magazine that he wasn't bothered about Taylor writing about the break-up of their relationship. He said: "It's flattering. It's always nice to hear their side of the story."
She sad it was recorded last minute and it shows. Had she had more time to go over it again, it may have been better.
