Two weeks later like a surplus reprieve.
I found a hair the length of yours on my sleeve,
I wound it round and round my finger so tight.
It turned to purple and a pulse formed in sight,
And I knew the beat 'cause it marched your own beat.
I still remember that from our chest to chest then feet to feet.
The easy silence then was a sweet relief to this hush,
Of ovens airplanes and of distant car points.
[Chorus]
A fire a fire, you can only take what you can carry,
A pulse, you're pulse, it's the only thing I can remember.
I break, you don't, I was always set to self-destruct, though
The fire, the fire, the cracks and the barks like primal music.
I said I knew the beat 'cause it marched your own beat.
It's become my engine my own source of heat.
The sea between us only amplifies the sound waves,
And every hum and echo in crash paints my cave.
[Chorus:Repeat x2]
I found a hair the length of yours on my sleeve,
I wound it round and round my finger so tight.
It turned to purple and a pulse formed in sight,
And I knew the beat 'cause it marched your own beat.

the title suggests self-destructive behaviour (obviously) and, due to his loss, a feeling that he belongs somewhere else.
To me, it seems like this is a song about someone trying to deal with the loss (maybe death, but probably a breakup since he mentions the "sea between us") of his "soulmate". In the first verse, it seems that he feels such a sense of loss that every little thing, even something as insignificant as a piece of hair the length of his soulmate, reminds him of his loss. It's interesting how it seems like he wants so suffer (hence the wrapping the hair around the finger until it turns purple) with the reminder of his loss.
I'm not sure what "you can only take what you can carry" means in the context of the song. I would like to know more about what other people think. for some reason it reminds me of a situation in which a house is burning down ("a fire, a fire"), and you can only take out what you can carry in order to survive. maybe he was so dependent on his soulmate that when s/he left, he was unable to take back all of the pieces of himself that was given to his soulmate. he seems full of self-blame and feels undeserving, hence "i was always set to self-destruct".
The last two lines of the last verse of the song are so sad! No resolution at all. The distance between him and his soulmate only increases his loneliness and the pain of his loss. every small object/event of him/her is "amplified" and also permanently recorded as a reminder on his "cave," a metaphorical representation of his isolated, lonely mind, containing memories of the past--Just the opposite of a resolution.
Wow, as you can tell from my mini essay above (i can't believe i wrote so much), i just love this song. i'd love to hear what others think.
I believe the "fire" represents the friendship being destroyed, and you have to get away from it, and fast, so you can't have anything weighing you down, just take what you can carry. It's almost like the singer is asking the estranged friend to come with him...
The "pulse" represents the friend. You are so consumed in trying to get over losing your friendship that your friend is the only person you can think about ("It's the only thing I can remember").
"I break, you don't" - this shows how one friend always gets over something like this quicker and better than the other.
"I was always set to self-destruct though" - my favourite line in the whole song. It shows that you know your unstable, and deep down you just can't take it anymore and want to get away from it. "Self-destruct" - choosing your end/suicide/destroying yourself.
"The fire, the fire, it cracks and barks like primal music" - The friendship breaking and ending badly.
And I think the bit where it says "The sea between us only amplifies the sound waves" just shows how distant you've become.
I only think it's about a friend because, in my opinion, it far worse and heartbreaking to have your best friend turn their back on you than to have somebody you thought you loved leave you.
this sounds like he didn't need to be reminded of someone he's broken up with, but when he was reminded, all the good times came flooding back.
'When your eyes meet mine, I lose simple skills, like to tell you all I wont is now' reminds me of how i feel numb as i gaze into her eyes. Amazing line.
Best track of the album along with set down your glass
if someone could explain it tha would help!
I Love everything about this part
"Two weeks later like a surplus reprieve
I found a hair the length of yours on my sleeve
I wound it round and round my finger so tight
It turned to purple and a pulse formed inside"
Its about missing someone you have just lost and trying to move on. Then you find a little reminder of them-like a hair-and you can't help but think about them You compare your own pulse to theirs("Your beat") and remember the days when you lay so close to them that you could feel their heartbeat/pulse. The loneliness of not being with that person makes the silence eerie, and the distance between you "amplifies the sound"-makes the loneliness/silence unbearable and worse. The silence is deafening, eg The crackling of the fire-"barks"like "primal music" and the only sounds to be heard are irrelevant-("hum of ovens, aeroplanes...") because you feel you have nothing left.
this one really almost brought me to tears.
considering that i actually have lost someone, you've hit the nail on the head. what a beautiful song and response. :)
