The lyrics are cute, albeit kinda sexist.
But the song title reminds me way too much of Ciara's 'Like A Boy', and this song sounds like it's trying to be like 'Big Girls Don't Cry' and 'Take A Bow' with 'Listen' vocals.

B is gonna flop hard!

I actually think this song is one of Beyonce's best, perhaps on par with Irreplaceable. In the verses, she's singing about how she'd be like as a boy if she had the mind of a boy; whilst in the chorus she's saying what she'd be like as a boy if she had a girl's mind if you get what I mean LOL.

SourBlue obviously doesn't know what they're talking about- just because Ciara and Beyonce both have the words "boy" in the song doesn't mean it's trying to be Like a boy. Big Girls Don't Cry and Take a Bow don't sound anything like this song.. plus, neither are even close as good as this song.

I love this song. One of my favourite Beyonce songs ever.
It's beautiful and her vocals on this song are great.
I think it's about her being treaten badly by men and saying she'd do things differently if she were a guy (kinda obvious I know.)

she's talking about how if she would be aboy for a day she would be equipped witht he mind of a girl so she'd be able to love a woman better becausee she knows how it feels to have her heart broken, i guess a boyfriend cheated on her and is crawling back to her,but she doesnt want him back cause hes just a boy ...so like he cant love?or possibly aswell as a girl could.

this is a beautiful song. its true to alot of relationships. it almost made me cry. because sometimes boys just hurt the women in their lives and we really don't deserve it. so she is showing she knows what is going on and she just wishes that they would understand how they make us feel sometimes.

If I were a boy is a commentary on the double standards that that often exist between men and women and a story of role reversal. She explores what it would be like if she did all the things he did to her every day. The woman in the song has been taken for granted but at the same time she doesn't want to let go and lose everything that she once had. It's unclear at the end whether she is final about not taking him back or if there is a note of hope that someday he'll realize what he's been doing to her and become a better man.

this is kind of like "Like A Boy" by Ciara, except that one's a little happier.. as if the girl in that song wasn't in a relationship & just wanted to explore the single life of a guy. in this song, the girl obviously knows the strain a guy can cause on a relationship & sees the situation differently.


i generally don't like Beyonce's songs, but i like this one. =)

She understands why guys act the way they do, but she also understands she would act differently if she herself were a guy only because she knows what it's like to be treated that way.

this song struck home for me. i could totally relate to her and the pain in her lyrics. he doesn't understand how his behavior is hurting her or how its destroying the relationship. he thinks that what he's doing is his god-given right, to drink with the guys or chase after girls, whenever and however he wants. yet she is waiting at home, loyal and loving only him. its only too often that a guy will do that. but its not to say that there are girls who will do that too. for a guy to understand the hurt he could bestow on his girlfriend, takes sensitivity. its hard for him to even understand how hanging out with a girl late at night and not answering his phone would be offensive. but thats what beyonce is trying to say; if she were a boy, she would understand that and she wouldn't do anything to hurt her significant other, because they didn't deserve that. to treat your boyfriend/girlfriend with love, loyalty, and appreciation is something that takes sensitivity. and all too often the guy [or girl] will not have it. thumbs up to beyonce for this song; its amazing.

She knows about all those typical guy activities (chasing the girls, staying out late with the guys, etc.) and how they usually tend to hurt the girl they are in a relationship with. So she's saying that if she were a boy, even for just a day, she would be the best man she could be because she knows from personal experience how it feels to be hurt by the man she's in love with.

I usually don't like Beyonce's songs, but this one has a really special place in my heart. (:

I think hectopascal hit the nail on the head.
The idea that if she were just a regular boy, she'd do all the things he was doing. But if she could live for one day as a guy, she'd know how to be better because she knows what the other side is like.

One thing I like (though I might be over-analyzing) is that she uses the word "boy" for most of it, and the only time "man" is used is in a positive connotation. I think that says quite a bit.

Another note: the video for this is awesome. :)

I think this songs going to do amazing....Sorry Sourblue... I don't think you know what you're talking about. I understand the Ciara refference... but I believe B relates to a larger audience. She shouldn't have any problems with her new record if this is the kind of stuff shes bringing to the table...

I'm really loving this song. It talks about double standard... it talks about how woman feels... it talks about how a man feels... it's sooo honest and brutal at the same time.

At first I didn't understand this song but now I think I do.. If I read the above responses correctly, it's how Beyonce feels that other men have treated her badly and if she were in their position, she'd be a much better man. Tell me if I'm wrong?
