I think it's somewhat interesting that in an interview he did with a London paper during the tour for the self-titled album, Conor said that "Eagle on a Pole" was a song about infidelity... which was kind of when the rumors of him and Maria breaking up started to circulate.

Now, this shows up on the following record. And (to me, at least) it's pretty clearly about someone being with a lot of different women while he has a steady girlfriend (or after a break up with a long-term girlfriend) and then her finding out... and him realizing he actually wants her back.

I love the closing lines-- "It'll be like it's been if you come home again / those ten women have all gone away" Ha.

Conor said this was a "song about compensating for a low self-esteem" at one of his shows. I don't know if that's true, but it might be a clue ;o

I think this song is about a bad relationship, or rather, a relationship that's turned bad. And about wanting to cheat/thinking about cheating, though perhaps not actually even following through with it.

When I saw him in concert the other night, before he played this song, he said "This next song is about when things go on for way too long. Long after they've stopped being fun."

This song is about a guy who is realizing he has been entering relationships (10 of them) but only achieving a short distraction from the one girl who he still pines for, meanwhile, she's moved on.
He also alludes to her being untrustworthy as a reason for their separation.
The third verse is about him just wanting someone to talk to who can sympathize other than her.

this is about CHEATING.
ten women came between Conor and whomever he was dedicted to.

being with ten women was a nightmare because he never thought he could hurt the person he loved like that
but at the same time it was a fantasy because he was.. ya know, gettin it on. it was thrilling but
he feels ashamed of himself for doing that to his girlfriend (maybe maria???) but he says he misses her
just the same. i dunno what the good timing king means but hes made a fool of himself because he lost his girl because of these ten women.

also the second verse is about a serious situation...sad but it is about something hard to write out. It also goes along with my idea about polygamy because of romanticism and tragedy...I feel bad spelling it out because thats something that shouldnt be put on the page so look up to verse and take it for youserlf

The first verse is not about a relationship going bad. It is about the medieval times and Polygamy (thats what I take it as because look at "Ten women
I miss you the same
While you're kissing the ring
Of some good timing king
Ten women
A fool I have made")...It was very usual for men to have many wives but at the same time women were acting against polygamy and trying to make their own profession in writing.


Although it could be an allusion towards medieval times but also a line at his life and women.

I think this is about a relationship gone bad to the point she is never herself around him and so he feels like he's with ten women and maybe he himself has two faces but he wants this all to end and doesn't really know how, he wants a witness somebody other than him to see all these sides of her and make her realize what she's doing to him, and wishing that she would just come home alone without all these other sides of herself and be the woman he loved.
