Lyrics for Sleepyhead as interpreted by robbnthahood

Sleepyhead Lyrics
And everything is going to the beat
And everything is going to the beat
And everything is going

And you said
It was like fire around the brim
Burning solid
Burning thin the burning rim
Like stars burning holes right through the dark
Flicking fire like saltwater into my eyes
You were one inch from the edge of this bed
I drag you back a sleepyhead, sleepyhead

They couldn't think of something to say the day you burst
With all their lions and all their might and all their thirst
They crowd your bedroom like some thoughts wearing thin
Against the walls against your rules against your skin
My beard grew down to the floor and out through the doors
Of your eyes but go in disguise like a sleepyhead, sleepyhead

Go ahead

I prefer the original sleepyhead but either way this is the greatest song I've heard in a very long time.

I think it might be "burning solid" instead of burning silent and "saltwater into my eyes" instead of someone. The latter makes more sense. And it sounds like "you were lying an inch from the edge of this bed" then i think it's "I grab your neck a sleepyhead?" For whatever reason, it just sounds like that to me. and the second verse is just blehh I don't know. It's all very..slurred. But still good.

Ah! Saltwater...brilliant. I'm trying to get some program to filter just the vocals, but i'll make some of those changes in the meantime. I agree with you on everything except "grab your neck"..its so hard to hear what hes saying here.

i think between the "and everything is going to the beat" part and the first verse, the sample is saying "please let me hold you" and mixed in there sounds something like "please knock when you need it"

am I the only one who thinks first verse is about sex? hehe...surely it cant be far fetched an interpretation? They had a passionate night and the singer is recounting? and then second verse is kinda like he is praising the object of her desire?

just an interpretation after 2 listens so might need a week or two more for the song's meaning to mature i guess hehe

i agree with ilvive, it is a praise of his partner and a recollection of a passionate night.
already one of the best songs of 2009, looking forward to more from the band.

okay, i can totally see the metaphors and everything for a passionate night in bed...

but honestly...
why the hell would you use the word "burning" so many times in a stanza about sex.
it just made me think she had syphalis or something, as awful as that sounds.

oh well, i love this song, i love this band. i saw them play in boston around may of last year,k they were great and i can't see what else they have to offer.

This song is amazing and it makes me feel so free.
I see the sex metaphor but to me it's something else.
Besides just being awesome, it reminds me of after breaking down. You're tired and your eyes are burning. You've been on fire with sadness or rage. Now you're coming down and you're so sleepy.
"You were one inch from the edge of this bed
I dragged you back a sleepyhead"
She's on the edge and he worries so he pulls her to bed and lets her sleep it off.
In the morning her family and friends crowd her, proud and hungry for their own stable lifestyle.
"They couldn't think of something to say the day you burst
With all their lions and all their might and all their thirst
They crowd your bedroom like some thoughts wearing thin
Against the walls against your rules against your skin"
They maybe suggest she gets help so they don't have to deal with it but it's not what she wants. It might feel like they're against her when all she needs is to sleep with the guy who protected her through her breakdown and all night. He loves her and he's going to stay.
"My beard grew down to the floor and out through the doors"

I'm not sure, but this is how it feels to me sometimes. Sometimes it definitely feels like more of a sexual meaning.

i think people are reading way too much into this song.
i simply feel that it's about meeting the love of your life.
in the first verse, it's about how they make him feel and how they're amazing and make his heart race.
"You were one inch from the edge of this bed
I drag you back a sleepyhead, sleepyhead"
is simply more than "i'll catch you when you fall", it's more "i won't let you fall, i'll always be looking out for you"
i didn't get much from the second verse, other than they are seeing each other against alot of peoples will?
"My beard grew down to the floor and out through the doors"
i agree, means that they wish they could lay there forever.

Ah, I didn't like this song much until I heard it on Skins, and it seems really dreamlike and surreal but reachable too. I don't know what it's about, it just feels good.

to me these lyrics reveal a story of a man who loved a drug addicted woman. in this story the man helps the woman get over her drug addiction however she falls back into bad habbits, and just like that she's addicted to drugs. the man feels terrible because he tried to save her but she still died and he feels guilty. her family come into her room where she is laying on her bed dead, and they realise that she should not have abandond her, and that they should have tried to help her out more. the man feels cheated because he always stood up for her, and now he's just some otheyr guy out there who is a nobody there for he falls into a drug habbit and is killed him self. when it says"My beard grew down to the floor and out through the doors"
i think that it's not litural but meaning that, he was loya, and would have stuck by her, and stood up for her no matter what.and when he says " go ahead" > he's thinking, no point in living i'd ratehr be with her

I disagree with the whole sexual meaning for some reason i think this song has a hidden message of drugs and love. i think that when it's referring to
"It was like fire around the brim
Burning solid
Burning thin the burning rim" that maybe the truth hurts?

"Like stars burning holes right through the dark" maybe these lyrics mean that that he knew something bad was going to happen to her, and that he tried prevent it but for some reason he couldn't.

"Flicking fire like saltwater into my eyes" crying because he is upset

"You were one inch from the edge of this bed" she was close to going over the edge... with drugs? maybe she had gone to far?
"I drag you back a sleepyhead, sleepyhead"> he had helped get over the addiction

"They couldn't think of something to say the day you burst"> she got addicted to drugs again and died.
"for all their might and all their thirst"> her family thought they were better and would rise above this and give up on her.but now they realise that they were wrong and feel guilty for leaving her.
"Against the walls against your rules against your skin"> the drug addicted girl who died won't forgive them because they abandond her
"My beard grew down to the floor and out through the doors"> this to me shows loyalty. that he would always be there for her, old and lonely,

"Of your eyes but go in disguise like a sleepyhead, sleepyhead" hm. too me these lyrics have a romeo and julliet feel. dont know why haha

"Go ahead" this gives me a feeling that the man given up as well, and kills himself by turning to drugs.

well this is my interpretation... hey i could be wrong :P

I just love this song. Everything about it, I'll never get sick of it, I'm convinced. I've been listening to it since thanksgiving. It's true, very releasing, and makes me dance everytime! Automatic mood upper! CAN'T WAIT FOR THEIR NEW ALBUM! As for what the song means... it changes for me all the time. I think all the lines are very broad concerning their metaphors.

"Like stars burning holes right through the dark.
Flicking fire like saltwater into my eyes."

I think the first line is about something really obvious, making itself apparent, or something just brilliant.
& if you think about the second line, it's really the most visual to me. Salt water in your eyes stings terribly. So I think maybe the combination of that part is saying something along the lines of the truth hurts. I could be way off, but that's just my favorite part.
