I think the song means a combination of RockerTwilighter109's meaning of " when someone is leaving and they want their loved one to keep the "Light on when I'm gone" " and joshzz's meaning of "a song that refers to a soldier who has to return to Iraq and leave his wife behind." Put those two together and thats what the meaning is imo
