Lyrics for Human as interpreted by poorlilrockstar

Human Lyrics
I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind

And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Hear my regards to soul and romance
They always did the best they could

And so long to devotion
It taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye, wish me well
You've gotta let me go

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

You've gotta let me know

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

"Are we human or are we denser?" sounds better to me.

Not too bad of a tune, very upbeat.

This is an intriguing track. Although not as strong lyrically as others, still the Killers provoke thought.

I think the imagery speaks of 'dancers' as almost like 'puppets'. Brandon is speaking of letting go, "platform of surrender" "cut the cord" "close your eyes, clear your heart" This "letting go" is to cease to be "Human" because he no longer has life, (eyes closed, cleared heart) and he feels like a "Dancer", a puppet on strings.

The puppet versus human contrast is throughout. To be human is to have life and choice. To be dancer is to be controlled by strings or "cords"

He uses a play on words, instead of "vital signs" his "signs are vital" and "my hands are cold", i.e. lifeless, he is lifeless, and reading his signs are vital in knowing what he really is. He goes on to "say goodbye" to everything (soul and romance, etc), embarking into that "open door"

Like a slouched puppet, he's on his knees. Puppets have no strength in their legs. Yet he wants to "be let go" and to "cut the cord" could refer to losing his strings and being freed from control, no longer being a puppet. Or it could refer to no longer being human. If you "cut the cord", you pull life support on someone. In mythology, The Fates, "cut your cord" and you die, no longer with the life that makes one Human.

The great thing about this song is I can't figure out if he decided he is "human" or "dancer" and maybe he hasn't decided either, "Am I human....or am I dancer."

Great song after a couple of listens, gotta love the Killers.

According 2 me

this song is abt euthanasia (mercy killing) as i understand frm these lines

"Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord"

"There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?"

maybe its about a man who is dyin with cancer or sumthn and he wants us to know if we are human enough to let him go and pull the plug and ease his sufferin

nice beat though more like hot fuss...

i like this song, it does sound more like hot fuss, it is brilliant.

as for the interpretation i think Icarus Fixius has it right, i think it is along the same lines as tranquilize in respect to the state of the world/our humanity.

anyway i can't wait for the album, if it is as good as this i'll be happy.

I'm not sure that being a "dancer" means exactly being a puppet.

The first thing I thought was a Kundera's novel ("Slowness"), were the dancer is a person who constantly seeks the infinite and invisible audience that modern media offers.

More info on Wikipedia about the "dancer" in Milan Kundera's work at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slowness_(novel)

p.s. I'm not sure my english is perfect, but I think it's quite understandable.

I don't know about being a puppet, but when I think of dancers, I think that they just do... If that makes sense. When someone is dancing, that's all they're doing, they're content with that, it's kind of almost... animal in a way? I'm not sure if that makes sense in the way I'm explaining it, but when I think about it, I think that if you're human, you're warm, you're subjective, but dancers are almost mechanical and focused only on dancing (I did ballet for 6 years when I was younger and I hated this!)

"My sign is vital/My hands are cold" sounds to me like he knows he's still alive, but he thinks he's lost what makes a human being a human being. The same goes for the second verse.

As opposed to the puppet imagery, I feel that "And I'm on my knees looking for the answer" is more about questioning if this is all there is to life, like, if there's a God or not. I think that a big difference between normal animals and human beings is that humans search for things greater than themselves, and somehow, if there isn't a God, it makes us feel a little less human. He's praying maybe over whether he is human or not? The line "There is no message we're receiving" makes me think of this too.

Yay for disjointed analysis, if you can even call it that :P

Hmm I like your analysis Sondralynn. I agree the song like other Killers songs seems to explore the question of life's purpose and what else is out there, etc. At any rate, dancer is in contrast to human in this song.

my friend and i have a couple of thoughts.
we've focused mostly on the
"our we human or are we dancer"
line from the song. dancer is singular
because it's a play on words, the same
reason human is singular. and one of
us thinks it could mean that human
and dancer are different things entirely.
are we human OR are we dancers, you
cannot be both. i think that it's saying
that the word dancer describes us much
better as a species than the word human.

DENSER
meaning, are we just human like CaveDave the Human on the single's cover, or are we more than just human, w/ emotions etc...
dancer makes no sense :|
and dancer reminds me of brandon ronnie mark and cavedave ballet dancing :|
other than that line, i ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE LYRICS!

The only reason I would think it is "denser" is because I don't hear the "s" in supposed "dancers".

But I would like to see the interview.

Now, this is a stab in the dark as to what the song would mean if it is "denser".

I think the contrast between human is that a human is just a body but what would make it denser would be a soul and/or a spirit...possibly connected to God.

"I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord"

I think this is about descending to heaven or making moral choices. You need to make them with a clear heart, don't let your eyes deceive you, and let go (maybe thus putting your faith in God. Or cutting the cord as we cut a baby's cord to bring it into life. He is being brought into the real world or a different one)

"Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Hear my regards to soul and romance
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion
It taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye, wish me well
You've gotta let me go"

I'm guessing that he is saying goodbye and going over the things that make him before he goes to this world.

"Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?"

I have no good idea about this. Possibly he is asking someone still on our world, someone who is JUST human (like a machine) whether or not he is alive...or okay. The world Flowers is going into maybe, being Heaven, the ultimate home. Being a human/computer it can't go because it's separated from God.

"Are we human or are we denser?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we denser? "

This is basically Flowers approaching death asking whether there is a God or whether he is only a human and nothing more.

im not completely sure i've figured this song 's meaning out quite yet, but i must say im very excited that it seems that the Killers are going back to a more Hot Fuss kind of sound :)

as for the lyrics though, instead of "hear my regards to soul and romance" i believe its "GIVE my regards to soul and romance" and in the chorus i dont think "dancer" is suppose to be plural. then again, thats just my opinion and what i hear when i listen to the song.

overall this song is great, i cannot wait to buy it on the 30th so i can finally put it on my iPod and listen to it anywhere :)
and i REALLY cant wait for the album to be released, im sure it'll be as fantastic as (and more likely, even better than) this one single alone :D

the lyrics do make a lot more sense with "denser", but I keep hearing "dancer" still. Maybe in the interview there was a transcription error because it just kinda sounds like that when he says it, and that's where "dancer" came from??

I think the enunciation of the chorus would be different if the word was "denser." If you listen carefully, Brandon is singing a higher pitched "annn," not a lower "ehhh" that would exist if the word was "dense" instead of "dance." There's probably a more technical way to describe that, but I'm not a music expert.

I think lostfanatic84 makes a very good point, too.

"And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord"

this part I took literal when it says cut the cord I think its the umbilical cord he is referring to, since he does have a baby,if that's the case the lyrics to this song would make a lot of sense to me. But its just a thought.

ps. dancers makes no sense I vote for denser.

I'm not a big fan of this song or songs that harbor that techno, clubby, dance music. But I think a REMIX of "Are we human or are we cancer" Could be relatively successful.
