He said son, have you seen the world?
Well, what would you say if I said that you could
Just carry this gun, you'll even get paid
I said that sounds pretty good

Black leather boots
Spit-shined so bright
They cut off my hair but it looked alright
We marched and we sang
We all became friends
As we learned how to fight

[Chorus]
A hero of war
Yeah that's what I'll be
And when I come home
They'll be damn proud of me
I'll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
Cause it's a flag that I love
And a flag that I trust

I kicked in the door
I yelled my commands
The children, they cried
But I got my man
We took him away
A bag over his face
From his family and his friends

They took off his clothes
They pissed in his hands
I told them to stop
But then I joined in
We beat him with guns
And batons not just once
But again and again

[Chorus]

She walked through bullets and haze
I asked her to stop
I begged her to stay
But she pressed on
So I lifted my gun
And I fired away

And the shells jumped through the smoke
And into the sand
That the blood now had soaked
She collapsed with a flag in her hand
A flag white as snow

A hero of war
Is that what they see?
Just medals and scars
So damn proud of me
And I brought home that flag
Now it gathers dust
But it's a flag that I love
The only flag that I trust

He said, son, have you seen the world?
Well what would you say, if I said that you could?

My Interpretation:This is a really powerful song for anyone who knows anyone who has fought in war. It is one of the best to describe the feelings and thoughts of a soldier. One of the first to actually say what REALLY goes on. In the song it talks about how he thought he was going to travel the world, it would be an easy job.
"He said son, have you seen the world?
Well, what would you say if I said that you could
Just carry this gun, you'll even get paid
I said that sounds pretty good"
When in reality it's hell. At first he stays true to his morals but then falls prey to irrational acts of a more barbaric nature that seem's to appear within men when they fight.
    "They took off his clothes
    They pissed in his hands
    I told them to stop
    But then I joined in
    We beat him with guns
    And batons not just once
    But again and again"
Then you have the climax of the song when he see's this girl running towards him. He has no choice but to gun her down. She has a "flag white as snow." So he realizes that he has gunned down and innocent girl that did nothing wrong. He realizes what war is, what it does to people. He is forever changed by it and can never go back. But he always remembers what he did those days.
    "A hero of war
    Is that what they see?
    Just medals and scars
    So damn proud of me
And I brought home that flag
    Now it gathers dust
    But it's a flag that I love
The only flag that I trust

He said, son, have you seen the world?
Well what would you say, if I said that you could?"
Very sad song but has a lot of truth to it.Thank you Rise Against for another one of your master pieces.

My Opinion:I can't believe I have been listening to this song for so much time, without looking its lyrics up. I thought that he said that But then I joined HIM. THEY beat him with guns... and later, A hero of war, Is NOT what they see; and I thought that I doesn't necessary refer to the army, or the war - it tells the fights that we all have to do. But now, after i found it's real meaning, I am kinda disappointed.

Song Meaning:My thoughts on the song is that it isn't a diss on anyone in the military, but against war itself.

Everyone thinks of people in the military who fight in wars as heros, but that's not all there is to war (as this song explains)...

    Example:

"She walked through bullets and haze
    I asked her to stop
    I begged her to stay
    But she pressed on
    So I lifted my gun
    And I fired away"

"And the shells jumped through the smoke
    And into the sand
That the blood now had soaked
She collapsed with a flag in her hand
    A flag white as snow"

    The killing of innocent people...

    "A hero of war
    Is that what they see?
    Just medals and scars
    So damn proud of me
And I brought home that flag
    Now it gathers dust
    But it's a flag that I love
The only flag that I trust"

Meaning all people think of is a person being JUST a Hero of War, not all the casulties, etc. that they went through... especially when there is more to it than what most people see.

This song is a diss on war and how un-needed a lot of it is all because most people think about fighting rather than getting along.

My Interpretation:I know the origin and meaning of this song , but i thought id attempt at going a bit deeper into my personal analysis.
I think overall the song shows the regression of a soldier and man. He is coming to terms with the situation he was put in when he was young and innocent and the overall consequence of this commitment when he was left with the psychological and emotional trauma and pain in addition to the regret and the remorse he feels towards his actions.
' Son have you seen the world?' This lyric is repeated as, in my opinion it was a very large amount of significance. At the beginning , he is eager to physically see the world - the sights , travel ect , however the repeated version at the end is almost a metaphor for his maturing and experience. Have you seen the world ? For example have you seen the hate and the wars , have you seen the corruption ect
The white flag that the girl is holding may represent the flag of surrender. Someone may assume that they would have stopped shooting if it was a flag of surrender but he didnt - in fact he killed her and it shows that the white of his innocence is damaged by the blood stains of war. He tries to justify his action by saying I begged her to stop.
The song also indicates the pressure to idolize respect soldiers ( as people should) but also glorify them:
In fact, society glorifies soldiers to the point people forget the soldier is a man ( or woman) and hence people willingly sign up unaware of the trauma they will go through and also the trauma they will force onto others out of pressure from their job. 'i begged them to stop, but then I joined in"
At first becoming a soldier was exicting and appealing - carrying the flag felt patriotic however after 'seeing the world' all of the appeal has gone, he is only performing his duty out of loyalty and because he has to, nothing more. 'now it gathers dust'

General Comment:McIlrath (The lead singer) wrote this song after speaking to Iraq war vets at concerts and being horrified by the stories they told and the psychological trauma they deal with. This song is written FOR veterans, not against them. The song is clearly about the horrible things they have to deal with, and is such, a glorification of the soldiers in the sense that they go through a lot in the love of their country, but is also openly hateful of the war that forces these people to go through such things.

General Comment:From the way the lyrics were written, this song sounds like it is following the life of a US soldier during the Korean/Vietnam Wars. Back then Recruiters for the military advertised to the young men the way the song describes.

Many things happened in those wars just like they were described. I personally think its around the Korean/Vietnam war era by the way the lyrics are written, but It could be any war period.

General Comment:I think everyone needs to look beyond the aspect of war. I feel as though the singer is trying to connect his lyrics not just with war over in other countries, but also to make a parallel to all the shit that goes on in America. Though no war has touched our soil since Pearl Harbor or 9/11, there's still so much that we do to ourselves and I feel like he's explaining this through the song as well.

My Opinion:I don't think this is, in anyway, trying to badmouth our soldiers. I believe he is singing it from a soldiers perspective, the type of things the media leaves out. The stories my cousin told me after he returned from the middle-east just stunned me; we forget the truth as opposed to the small clips the military tells us. There is so much psychological hardships the have to face and I feel like society almost ignores that. I still think it's a beautiful song, but tragic too.

General Comment:you know he is saying that the soldiers are more glorified than they should be but guess what they bleed for you they die for you. so please dont ever bad mouth them. i dont believe in the war but in may when i graduate im headed down the the recruiting office and i plan on fight for you to be able to say what youv said. and the soldiers need to be glorified you dont know what theyve been through or what theyve had to do for you. my brother had flashbacks when he was on leave from afghanistan so he needs every little bit of support and for yall not to say anything negative.....someone once said you got the right to say what you want, we got the right to punch you in your fucking mouth if we disagree...so there u go folks ill be fighting for you right to keep on not giving a fuck. c ya later...p.s i loved the song fuck the war love the soldiers

General Comment:Even if we're fighting against a just cause, the human nature is far from just. When we engage in war, saying we're accruing honor and peace, we're actually contributing to the injustice in this world. Our soldiers are fighting for a better world.... for us. And in return, ending what good there was in another world. Don't be so eager to appraise someone for risking their life for their country unless we know what it is the country is doing. America is no longer the free and honorable country it once was, in fact, it never was. This country was founded on the basis of embracing individual freedom, but we haven't even achieved that yet. Think about all the wars and countries we've conquered or massacred in the name of America. Mexico, Pacific Islands, Vietnam, Caribbean Islands, Native Americans must I go on? Don't let the media tell you what's right and wrong. Read history to make an educated guess before going to war.
