Lyrics for Farewell to the Fairground as interpreted by miss_moto

Farewell to the Fairground Lyrics
The lights still in our eyes, we’re leaving this whole fairground behind, it’s a dream that’s going cold.

The circus never dies, the act forever haunts these skies, i know we cannot stay.

Farewell to the fairground, these rides aren’t working anymore.
Goodbye to this dead town, until the ice begins to thaw.

This place used to gleam, i see it in my hopeful dreams, now i have to get away.
We move towards the stars, and all that we touch becomes ours, lets keep warm till it’s day.

Farewell to the fairground, these rides aren’t working anymore.
Goodbye to this dead town, until the ice begins to thaw.

We’ll head south, just hold my hand now. I feel like i’m casting off my clothes and i’m running through the snow towards the sunset and i’m always with you.

Keep on running, keep keep on running, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.

Farewell to the fairground, these rides aren’t working anymore. Goodbye to this dead town, until the ice begins to thaw.

We’ll head south, just hold my hand now, i feel like i’m casting off my clothes, and i’m running through the snow towards the sunset, where i’m always with you.

This is such a good song!
and it's not morbid for once haha

Basically I think it's about changing a dream you had and moving on with your life.

For me, this song is about moving to a new place that you thought would be great and realising its not right for you.

Could be completely wrong, but still, a great song by a great band.

It's got that real 80s New Wave Krautrock kinda feel I think? Almost like Bauhaus and Echo and the Bunnymen amalgamated...

this song makes me think of prypriat in ukraine, when it was evacuated after the chernobyl accident.
there's a ferris wheel there, among all the apartment blocks and now its just bleak, like a ghost town.

also, the video was shot in russia ;D.

I think it's about two people in love who have possibly run away from home to be together. This place was fun and like a fantasy land, but its appeal has run out. They are now missing their homes and want to return there and perhaps be grounded again.

I think its about two people who have dreams of better places and must leave 'the fairground' to achieve them because theres nothing there for them anymore. 'Until the ice begins to thaw' This line tells us How dead the place is but it will get better once the 'Ice begins to thaw'Almost like a depression has hit and they must escape but the use of the word thaw means its only temporary so it will get better,They must go quickly because 'Its a dream thats getting cold'.

But when they achieve their 'dream' or escape its not all they thought it'd be. Hence 'Keep on running,Theres no place like home'

Thats my interpatation anyways probably total bullshit but there ya go

Wasn't really keen on White Lies until i heard this,It made me go out and buy the album.

I think it's about having to leave their hometown to chase their dream, of success in the music industry.

But if they're from Ealing, I don't see why they would have to move away to chase the dream.

Or could it possibly be about touring; leaving home for such long periods of time.

it's about chernobyl, "this place used to gleam, i'd see it in my hopeful dreams" is something the mayor of Pripyat said i think

I think the lyrics are very subjective, I often find that with White Lies.

However my initial understanding of these lyrics was about a failing relationship that they don't want to give up on. The fairground being a metaphore for the happy period in their relationship where everything was fun and happy but they've hit that rough patch, the magic has died and the "rides" aren't working anymore. They know the only way to get out of this rough patch is to leave it and say fairewell but the memories of what happened to make them hit a rough patch will haunt them forever just incase the relationship does fail or could haunt them to remind them not to end up in that position again; "the act forever haunts these skies"

In relation to the lyrics "We'll head south just hold my hand now" could be because on a compass you are always told to follow North, with South being opposite. To keep going forward you have to go north but instead they're going backwards, heading South to go back to the beginning of their relationship to start again, holding hands to show how they don't want to give up on each other.

"I feel like I'm casting off my clothes and I'm running towards towards the sunset when I'm always with you" To be naked is ultimate, intimate exposure, he feels like he is exposing everything he is to her in order rto have an honest feeling and prove his love, the sunset could be symbolic of the happiest place they could possibly be together, where she is always with him forever.

I know this won't be the true meaning, I've probably read into it too deep but that was my understanding anyhow.

I had somewhat the same interpretation as linguiticchick. Seems the one to go along with all the Metaphores and Stuff pretty well.
