Lyrics for Broken, Beat & Scarred as interpreted by Phonejack

Broken, Beat & Scarred Lyrics
You rise.
You fall.
You're down, then you rise again.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
You rise.
You fall.
You're down, then you rise again.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Rise, fall, down, rise again
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Rise, fall, down, rise again
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.

Through black days
Through black nights
Through pitch black insides

Breaking your teeth on the hard life a comin'
Show Your Scars.
Cutting your feet on the hard earth running
Show Your Scars.
Breaking your life, Broken, Beat, & Scarred.
But we die hard.

The dawn,
The death,
The fight to the final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
The dawn,
The death,
The fight to the final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Dawn, death, fight, final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.
Dawn, death, fight, final breath.
What don't kill ya make ya more strong.

They scratch me.
They scrape me.
They cut and rape me.

Breaking your teeth on the hard life a comin'
Show Your Scars.
Cutting your feet on the hard earth running
Show Your Scars.
Breaking your life, Broken, Beat, & Scarred.
But we die hard.

Breaking your teeth on the hard life a comin'
Show Your Scars.
Cutting your feet on the hard earth running
Show Your Scars.
Bleeding your soul in a hard luck story.
Show Your Scars.
Spilling your blood in the hot sun's glory.
Show Your Scars.
Breaking your life, Broke, Beat, & Scarred

We die hard.
We die hard.
We die hard.

I think this is about all the criticism and character assassination they took from St. Anger and the SKOM movie. The "Shoot Me Again" of this album, I guess.

I also think it could be a tribute to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This one does kinda remind me of what they went through as a band and a family, hard times but Metallica lives on!!!!!!!!!!

This songs is a favorite of mine off the new album. Yeah, you could see this part as a reference to a war in the desert, in this case, Iraq:

Bleeding your soul in a hard luck story.
Show Your Scars.
Spilling your blood in the hot sun's glory.
Show Your Scars.
Breaking your life, Broke, Beat, & Scarred

I'm pretty sure, though, it's "a hot sun's foray" and "braiding your soul". James seems to have kinda conservative views on war but that doesn't really matter. I think, anyway, this is about the band itself. Metallica dies hard: that's sure as hell. They've overcome James' addiction, Jason's departure, the Napster hell, the horrible reviews for St. Anger, the criticism for Load And Reload and the hard task of finding a new bass player. And they're here today with a new album out, a great new album, broken beat and scarred but still dying hard!

it's about living our life as we want to,whitout fear of what the others will think of us seeing "our scars" that,in my opinion are our errors and falls.it speaks also about live whitout fear the death and always to be stronger with all the life reserves for us.

The start of the song sounds really similar to Clutch's Texan Book of the Dead.
After the intros, the songs go in totally different directions, so I don't think there's any 'borrowing,' or anything like that.
I just thought it was interesting...

Both songs rock, BTW.

The new old sound of Metallica is better than anything else they ever did, this song is rocking amazing, the guitar works is something out of this world.

I believe the line 'what don't kill you make you more strong' describes perfectly what this song means.

I think this song is about learning from mistakes and surviving this hard live.

It's about Metallica's history, James' own life and other people like a soldier who's: "Spilling his blood an a hot suns foray"

I heard opinions about this song being the worst from the album but I totally disagree, it's one of my favourites. Lyrics are quite obvious, but I'm curious if there is similar saying ("What don't kill ya make ya more strong") in your country/language, because in polish there's exactly the same saying, quite popular :) And one more thing... This riff - 0:31, 5:07, 5:53, 6:11! It's one of the riffs I think only God could have written ;)

'what don't kill ya make ya stronger' I got a similar say in my country as well, i guess its something that everybody is using, so true though. PS: James vocals on this one and all nightmare long is epic.

That's a paraphrase of a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche. It's basically "That which does not kill me makes me stronger." Then again, Nietzsche ended up going insane (literally).

yea like the general consensus is, its about the ups & downs of life, everybody has them.

"You rise, you fall, youre down then you rise again"

further, it's about something that increases the intensity of both the "highs" and the "lows" of life... bipolar or manic depression

u go through manic episodes where u feel all energetic n in control n then u crash into deep depression

n then a positive message coming from james that whatever it is, goin through it makes u stronger, better.

listening to these lines makes me sure i got it right:

"Through black days
Through black nights
Through pitch black insights"

the rest just follows, like "getting bruised in living through it all ("Cutting your feet on the hard earth running") and then the self pity n desperate behavior that can follow ("show ur scars)

james finishes the song with: (i dont think its related to the war in Iraq)

"Braiding your soul in a hard luck story

Show your scars"

{oh braiding sort of means trimming, decorating, covering. eg usage:- 'Braided embroidery or trim.' or ' A braided segment or length, as of hair, fabric, or fiber.' so u always tellin urself tht how tough its been for u}

"Spilling your blood in a hot suns foray

Breaking your life, broken, beat and scarred " {this could be doing drugs like heroin i think}

this song is definitely about the depressive ones amongst us or at least the bitter, grumpy n sour ones if u prefer...

I went to the Metallica show on the 13th at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

James Hetfield introduced this song by stating that it's a song about Metallica. So that is the literal translation of it, and what the song was definitely written about, but obviously the vague lyrics mean it can apply to just about anybody.
