Lyrics for All Nightmare Long as interpreted by spacemonkey69

All Nightmare Long Lyrics
Luck. Runs. Out.
Crawl from the wreckage one more time
Horrific memory twists the mind
Dark, rutted, cold and hard to turn
Path of destruction, feel it burn

Still life...Incarnation
Still life...Infamy

Hallucination
Heresy
Still you run, what's to come?
What's today?

'Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck. Runs.

You crawl back in
But your luck runs out

Luck. Runs. Out.

The light that is not light is here
To flush you out with your own fear
You hide, you hide, but will be found
Release your grip without a sound

Still life...Incarnation
Still life...Infamy

Hallucination
Heresy
Still you run, what's to come?
What's today?

'Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Luck. Runs.

You crawl back in
But your luck runs out

Then you crawl back in
Into your obsession
Never to return
This is your confession

Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck. Runs.

You crawl back in
But your luck runs out

Your luck runs out

I think that this song is about running away and trying to escape horrific past experience. The thought of what happened haunts your nightmares for the rest of your life until you confront it.

Not so much drugs but fear and addiction would seem to be the theme here. From a personal view I look at it as the church during the inquisition and crusades or you could even look at it as society today demanding conformity and attempting to hunt down those who resist.
And to a person dwelling outside the bounds of society and religion, this could be a grand nightmare indeed.

Personally this could be my favorite song on Death Magnetic.

I think that first verse is about Metallica themselves at their darkest hour, 1. When Cliff Died, 2. When James struggled with addiction, 3. The failure of St. Anger and the loss of many fans through out the years.

As a whole i think the song is about the thing that you fear the most and how you're unable to escape it until you aren't afraid of it anymore. When you're dreaming a Nightmare IS real.

shiiiit this song is SO good. Trashiest/heaviest from Death Magnetic and certainly, along with "That Was just your Life", my favorite track on the album.

There are some references to the inquisition, or at least they look like that: "hallucination/heresy", might describe the way different thoughts are perceived, "this is your confession", inquisitors forcing a person to confess things that they have probably never committed, "we hunt your down" etc.

craw from the wreckage horrific memory ...... these lyrics sounds a lot like the tragedy in the 80s when metallica's tour bus driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed killing the legendary bass player cliff burton i think that james has that recurring nightmare and maybe it will happen to him one day cos everyone's luck runs out one day ....cos you can hide from death

I definitely think this is about the bus crash that killed Cliff, but it's Jame's nightmare. He may not have one every night, but eventually he will. It's like Russian Roulette, his luck runs out. He's crawling from the wreckage of the bus again and again, trying to run and get away from the nightmare.

"Still life... Incarnation"
Incarnation means a human being. Still life (not the paintings) means his life is gone and now he is still.

"Still life... Infamy"
Everyone who listens to Metallica knows the story of how Cliff died. It's famous.

"Hallucination"
James never believed the story that the bus hit a patch of black ice, and he thinks that everyone was lying to him, trying to get him to believe something that wasn't there, a hallucination.

"Heresy"
I can't figure this part out. This is the one part in the song that makes me feel like it's about something else. The only thing I can come up with is the fact that ever since his parents died, James has never been very close to God, and he might place part of the blame on him somehow.

"The light that is not light is here"
Everyone knows the saying "The light at the end of the tunnel" or, "Go towards the light." He's saying that the end of the tunnel isn't really light, it's just death.

"You crawl back in but your luck runs out"
He wakes up out of his dream, and he is now back in his own body. Eventually though, he will have another one of those nightmares.

atoutlem0nde, you might wanna look up infamy... it means living life with an extremely bad reputation, that being said... this song has nothing to do with cliff's death. I believe the band has changed their pace and look at the world. They believe there is a greater power out there to look towards. "still life... incarnation" means if you believe in incarnation you have nothing to live for, "still life... infamy" means when you live to make yourself look bad you have not lived a life worth living. The evil powers to be will try to hold you down. "Then you crawl back in
Into your obsession
Never to return
This is your confession"
You take a look at how you've lived your life and realize that you haven't lived in the way that you should be living life. You are confessing that you have done wrong in your life.

Probably my favourite song off the amazing new album.

I think it's about having constant nightmares about a horrific event of your past.

Maybe I'm just over-analyzing it but from my knowledge of Metallica and their history I think this song is about the bus crash that killed Cliff Burton and how the driver of the bus off clean for doing it. James Hetfield doesn't usually write that literally but in this case I think he did.

I think it's just a song about some nightmare James or someone had. Like he was bieng chased by something or whatever. Or it could also be a religious song, you know how James can be.

Now that I read all these...I think your right. This song could very well be about Cliff Burton. Because, the bus was pulled off of him, but then it snapped and fell on him again...then he died. Pay attention to the lyrics and take it from there point of view when they were there and trying to save him.
