Lyrics for Signs as interpreted by true.love.way

Signs Lyrics
Two ravens in the old oak tree and
One for you and one for me and
Bluebells in the late December
I see signs now all the time

The last time we slept together
There was something that was not there
You never wanted to alarm me
But I'm the one that's drowning now

I could sleep forever these days
Because in my dreams I see you again
But this time fleshed out, fuller faced
In your confirmation dress

It was so like you to visit me
To let me know you were ok
It was so like you to visit me
You always worried about someone else

At your funeral I was so upset
So upset, so upset
In your life you were larger than this
Statue-statuesque

I see signs now all the time
That you're not dead, you're sleeping
I believe in anything
That brings you back home to me

I see signs now all the time
That you're not dead, you're sleeping
I believe in anything
That brings you back home to me

ust a few thoughts...

People have mentioned the ravens, obviously a death omen, but no one has picked up that they're inside an 'old oak tree', how often do you see birds inside of trees!? I think the oak tree is used to symbolize coffins, which are usually made out of oak. The fact that there is one for each of them is key to the song. As clearly it's about the suicide of someone he loved, someone he slept with, and it's evident that he wants to get back to her, which is why he 'could sleep forever these days', as he sees her in dreams and why he says he's the one that's drowning now, because after her death, he also wants to die.

A 'confirmation dress' is what you wear at your first communion, unless you're a boy! I think the line is there firstly because its describing her when she was pure and happy and also to bring a religious element to the song, as with the funeral description, because then that justifies the line 'I believe in anything that brings you back to me'. Heaven is where they'd meet again, I imagine, in his head, so he's willing to believe in god if it'll bring her back.

Very good song, very subtle too, I like it.

this has already been said but this song is about the aftermath of losing someone. it very well may be his "Biko" whom was ailing from cancer. now without her, everything he sees reminds him of her. as if he is seeing her everywhere he goes. this feeds his denial that she isnt dead, that she cant be dead.

on a more personal interpretation, he is starting to haunt himself with her image. she is visiting him in his dreams to make sure he is ok. that is my favorite verse but it always sends a shudder down my spine. around the time my grandfather died i had a dream about him and he told me he would always look after me. whenever i hear that part of the song i could almost cry

I love when he says she came to him to let him know she was okay because that was her personality when she was alive.

It was so like you to visit me
You always worried about someone else

I feel like this song isn't really about suicide at all. It has a certain feeling to it that doesn't really fit suicide. I think the girl was sick and she went to tell him everything was going to be fine. And now she's dead and he's doesn't know how to come to grips with it.

This song is really upsetting because of how kind and far-off she was. Almost like a dream to him. That's usually what upsets me the most when someone is dead but you look back and see they were such a beautiful person. She must have been sick, I can't imagine it was suicide.

I also always thought the lyrics for the dream part was "in my dreams i see you again but this time fleshed out full of flames in your conformation dress"

I think this song is about a few things. It seems to be about the death of someone. But there is also something about confirmation (which in this case does not has to have anything to do with the confirmation dress) and "seeing" what you want to see.
He describes that in everything he sees, he sees signs that someone who died is still with him. I think the deeper meaning is that it's easy to see confirmation in anything; you see what you want to see, you hear what you want to hear.
For example, two ravens in a tree is nothing special, it needn't be a sign. Though it can be interpreted as a sign. Also, "It was so like you to visit me // To let me know you were ok // It was so like you to visit me // You always worried about someone else" is another case of how things can be fitted into anything; it's all a matter of interpretation. Signs can be seen everywhere, in everything.

Personally, this song means alot to me.
This is what I generally think it means.

'Two ravens in the old oak tree and
One for you and one for me'

Ravens are known to mate for life, and their is two, so one could represent him and the person he's lost in his mind, so he could take this as a sign.

'Bluebells in the late December
I see signs now all the time'

Bluebells are associated with death, it is a flower described in Greek mythology that sprang from the blood of the dying prince Hyacinthus. As a mark of his grief on the death of the prince, Apollo.
This could be a sign to him that the person he's lost is still around because their flowers that are known to spring in April and May. But he's seeing them in December.

'The last time we slept together
There was something that was not there'
I'm not sure on this part, but it could be about the person leaving him gently. Like their dying or something? but their trying to act normal.
'You never wanted to alarm me' This is in the past, like when they were dying. They didn't want to alarm them or make them feel down about it.

'But I'm the one that's drowning now'
In present he's the one thats in pain now. As losing someone to me, feels like your drowing, it's like you can't get away from it. There's nothing you can do.

'I could sleep forever these days
Because in my dreams I see you again'
He's talking about the present, and as the person is gone. They just want to sleep as it's the only way they can see them and be with them.

'But this time fleshed out fuller faced
In your confirmation dress'
About the funeral? As this isn't a dream 'fleshed' he can see her full in the face and she is actually their. 'confirmation dress' Like the last dress she'll ever wear. It's confirming that it's the end.

'It was so like you to visit me
To let me know you were ok'

Like the signs he's seeing. It's her that is sending them to him. This is quiet personal and sad detail as well. 'You always worried about someone else' It's as if even through death she is still worried for him. It adds up with the bit before about. her not wanting to alarm him. about her dying.

'At your funeral I was so upset
So upset so upset'
In your life you were larger than this
Statue-statuesque'

It's as if the funeral is not enough to show who the person was and what they meant. Like celebrating their life in just one day was not enough. I think that the first part is repeated as well just to ephasise how upset he really is. It's like it can't actually be justified. How sad this makes him.

'I see signs now all the time
That you're not dead, you're sleeping
I believe in anything
That brings you back home to me'

I think that he is beleiving in the signs he's seeing, and that they are her, and that he doesn't care what people think about what he believes in. Because he just wants her back. Kinda shows how even if people say they understand how you're feeling, they don't really. Because everyone feels differently about death and takes it in different ways.

Anyway sorry about that. But I just love this song too much.

This is based on my love story:

Two ravens in the old oak tree and
One for you and one for me and
Bluebells in the late December
I see signs now all the time
( WAS ME AND MY EX GIRLFRIEND, RAVENS REPRESENTS OUR DEATH)

The last time we slept together
There was something that was not there
You never wanted to alarm me
But Im the one thats drowning now

( THE LAST TIME WE SAW EACH OTHER WE SLEPT TOGETHER. THERE WAS SOMETHING LACKING, MY PREMONITION IS IT'S EITHER ME OR HER WHO CANNOT MOVE ON.)

I could sleep forever these days
Because in my dreams I see you again
But this time fleshed out fuller faced
In your confirmation dress

( I COULD STOP THINKING ABOUT HER THAT MUCH, BUT SHE AND HER MEMORIES HUNTS ME.
I DREAMT OF HER ALWAYS. SOMETIMES A DREAM THAT REMINDS ME THAT SOMETHING HAD CHANGED.)

It was so like you to visit me
To let me know you were ok
It was so like you to visit me
You always worried about someone else

( SHE KEEPS IN TOUCH WHATEVER IT TAKES EVEN THOUGH SHE IS NOW IN A NEW RELATIONSHIP.)

At your funeral I was so upset
So upset so upset
In your life you were larger than this
Statue-statuesque
( I CONSIDER HER DEAD SAME AS THESE FEELINGS. BUT I KNOW SHE DOES FEEL ME, THE SAME OLD US.)

I see signs now all the time
That youre not dead, you're sleeping
I believe in anything
That brings you back home to me

( I KNOW, SHE KNOWS THAT IM ASLEEP AND I DONT WANT HER TO WAKE ME UP FROM WHERE IM AT NOW. IM TRYING TO MOVVE ON BUT SOMETHING IS HOLDING ME BACK. IT SOMETHING THAT I WAS DROWNING AND I FOUNF A WAY TO SAVE MY LIFE. THAT WAS TO LET HER GO, BUT WE KEEP FINDING OURSELVES STILL IN THE SAME PLACE)

All the notes I have seen regarding ravens mark them as death symbols. I would like to 1st point out the old augury-poem that counts black birds - variously magpies, crows, and ravens. One for sorrow, two for joy, ... it's been taken up into a number of songs.

And then toss in other meanings for ravens: watchfulness, reminder of God's love, and specific to Brits re: the Tower of London, a sign of enduring

And if *I'm* looking at two ravens and seeing a sign that my love *isn't* dead, I'd take any one of those before seeing it as a symbol of death.

i think this was used in a T.V ad somewhere.....lol.

okay, first i think this still could be about a guy, and some people say that it is in fact about a woman, because of the "confirmation dress" line, but i just want to bring forth the fact that "dress" can mean an outfit for a man or woman, not just the curtain like garment for a girl...

but it really doesnt matter, because it's such a good song! =)

gorgeous song. the acoustic version is incredible.

i think what's going on here was the suicide of a girlfriend, and how he really didn't see it coming. but now that she's gone, he can see that all the signs were there and he feels regret that he didn't pay enough attention to them to stop it ..."the last time we slept together, there something that was not there."
the signs could also be referring to her "visiting him" now that she's gone through his dreams, and he no matter what, he'll never be able to give up on the notion that thats her way of contacting him and still being there for him. basically, just having a hard time letting go, maybe having a hard time actually even believing this could have happened to such a "statuesque" person. "It was so like you to visit me, always worried about someone else," and "you're not dead, you're sleeping" ...

the line "i could sleep forever these days, because in my dreams i see you again," really hits home with me. for the first few weeks after the death of a friend this past summer, i had a dream about him almost every night. i would wake up, and it would always take about 3 seconds before i snapped back into reality and realized he was gone. i would just lay in bed crying, trying to fall back asleep so i could see him again.

Without reading anymore of anyon else's thoughts... I think that it's about someone who died (obviously) or killed themselves.
Two birds in an old oak tree one for you and one for me reminds him of them together. Bluebells in late december being the fact that by late december they should be dead, but they're not. He states he sees almost everything as a sign now because he needs to.
If suicide's the case, or an illness that came suddenly, he says that the last time they were together he could tell something was wrong, but she wasn't the type to say anything about that sort of thing because she didn't like to bother people or him with that, so she'd rather drown in the feelings than try to express. But he states that he's the one "drowning" now, because of what she did.
"I could sleep forever..." Recently, she's been coming to him in his dreams more and more, and he thinks perhaps it's not just dreams, because now the details are clearer, "more fleshed out, fuller faced, in your confirmation dress." Someone stated that Catholics are buried in a confirmation dress... If she's suddenly coming to him in her confirmation dress, maybe he sees it as it must actually be HER coming to him, since it's more vivid, and is what she was buried in. She is checking on him because she's worried about him, because despite HER being the one who is dead, she can sense that he's drowing and can't take it. So now she is checking on him, knowing that because recently he's having a much harder time dealing than normal, it's getting to be too much. He normally dreams about her, but now it's more clear because she needs to help him.
"At your funeral I was so upset... In your life you were larger than this, statuesque.." A lot of people don't get hit by the reality of death until they see the person's body. When you see their body, it hits. You realize that, even though it's the same body, you can tell something is missing. Because, like a picture can't show you a personality, a person's body can't fill a room the way someone's charisma, charm, personality can. He was upset to see it because the shock of seeing her there, seeming so small (in a figurative sense), that it's not how he remembers her and isn't a good representation of her. Many people are upset by the body because it seems like a different person.
He sees many things as signs that might not even be because he has to believe in something in order to not drown. Since her coming to him in his dreams, he believes it really is her soul coming to check on him and make sure he's okay, because he misses her so much. He has to believe that, not only to cope, but because the change in vividness makes him believe that something must be different.
I dunno, to me, this is what I see. It seems so clear to me this way.

I believe this song is about a girl that died
Ravens are regarded as a spirit and in Celtic mythology an oak tree is the tree of doors, believed to be a gateway between worlds, in this case earth and heaven? So maybe he is saying this is a sign she (the woman that died) sent down to him on earth showing they should be together?
Bluebells I definitely think are a link back to what has been said before about Greek mythology as a mark of grieving for a loved one.

The next verse is saying that last time they were together she was not completely there ('There was something that was not there') maybe she was ill an becoming thinner and not as bright an lively as later on he says 'Because in my dreams I see you again
But this time fleshed out fuller faced' he thinks she didn’t tell him because she didn’t want to worry and upset him but he cannot breathe without her now

He feels he could sleep for ever these days because that’s the only way he could be with her again, perhaps he is thinking of killing himself to be with her again? In his dreams he sees her healthy and full of life maybe how she is now in heaven? The reference to her confirmation dress could be because now she is closer to God.

He then goes on about thoughtful she was to come and visit him in his dreams and by sending him signs to earth. Think that is kind of obvious.

At her funeral he saw he being so small, mild and helpless, compared to how she was when she was alive when she seemed so much bigger and stronger, he realises how delicate she really was and is upset that everyone can see her like this, so helpless.

He believes that she isn’t dead and is only sleeping waiting for him to come to meet him in heaven, but he doubts this a little because he says he will believe in anything that will bring her back to him.

This verse is repeated again to emphasise the fact he knows she isn’t really coming back despite all the things that were said before.

Correction to the last two replies which are wrong!!

'A 'confirmation dress' is what you wear at your first communion, unless you're a boy!'

that's not true - at your first communion you wear your first holy communion dress (white lacy thing), it normally happens when you're about 7 or 8.
Confirmation happens in your early teens and is different. Most people don't wear dresses for it anymore either.
'Statuesque' is a nice word for large.

this song makes me want to walk through a cemetery with a lot of open spaces & oak trees , personally .
just the theme of it , i cry to this song , its beautiful .

possibly it could mean that this man's lover died ,
not suicide per say, but she died suddenly ,
and he is seeing ' signs ' of her presence all the time ,

he sees her in her confirmation dress at her funeral ,
and he is angry that she is portrayed as this 'statue-statuesque' in her casket because he knows that in her life she was 'larger than this'

also he sees 'signs' possibly of her ghost ,
that she isn't dead , she's still in the world , and usually he's not one to believe in ghosts or anything spiritual like that ,
but he loves her so much he's willing to believe in anything that could possibly make it seem like she was still with him , also that line could be about beleiving in heaven and them being reunited there too.
truly beautiful , dark , song ,
i love it <3
