Be Like a Cloud Lyrics
Who said I was original?
Who said I was allowed, To sing as if I really sing, to write as if I really write Who said that I could suddenly get up from underneath and walk away completely stumbling between each breath I breathe And walk away stumbling sublimely between each breath I breathe Who said I was allowed? I once flew by a real tall wall with ivy all around And saw two eyes I really liked And saw two ears I really liked And saw two lips I liked as well And saw a face that I could love, But it was far so far and cold above Inside that big above But it was far and far and cold inside that big above Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Cause you’re no worse than a cloud Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Cause you’re no worse than a cloud And so I walked to everywhere And stopped in every town The big ones with the little pond The small ones with no pond at all And though I’ve eaten dirt before I‘ve never grown to like the taste And I prefer on any day a big green apple in its place And I’d prefer on any day a big green apple in its place Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Cause you’re no worse than a cloud Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Cause you’re no worse than a could And so I closed my eyes and walked And when I opened them again I knew the clouds had snowed on me, and then they poured on me some rain There stood this cold icicle the very shape and form of me I tried to cry but couldn’t So instead, I made myself a cup of tea I tried to cry but couldn’t So instead, I made myself a cup of tea Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Cause you’re no worse than a cloud Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Cause you’re no worse than a cloud So who said I was original Who said I was a cloud To rain as if I really rain To snow as if I really snow You know the fastest thing in this world is the speed of snow into your eyes as you walk off sublimely stumbling, sublimely slipping on the ice As you walk off sublimely stumbling, sublimely slipping on the ice Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Cause you’re no worser than a cloud Don’t ask for their permission They’ll never say that you’re allowed Be like a cloud Be like a cloud Be like a cloud Be like a cloud Be like a cloud La la la la la La la la la… |

But this isn't a bad thing-Reg encourages others to do what she does: don't ask for their permission. just be like a cloud, "'cause you're no worse than a cloud". in other words, just do what you love, because loving what you do is the greatest thing a person can do. Don't put yourself down and say "i'm not original, i can't write/sing like this person or that person", because if you love to write/sing/whatever, then you'll be every bit as good as the greats. Regina always said she looked up to the Beatles as a kid, and whenever she sings, "don't ask for their permission-you're no worse than a cloud", i think of them, and how Reg isn't striving to be "like" them, or looking for someone else's approval. She knows that she's every bit as good as them, because she's genuine, just like they were.
overall, a really sweet, honest song. i take the face, eyes, etc. to be her imagination coming up with her characters. She's flying around a big city and looking in windows, seeing all of these different things, these different people. i figure this is something like how she feels about writing: the characters are going about their business. She's not making them up, forcing them to do what she thinks is interesting. Rather, she's an observer looking in the window, and the songs are her observations of what they do, and what she thinks they're thinking, feeling, and what they're probably up to. There's not always a set-up master plot. sometimes it's just a story that rhymes.
"...and i make sh*t up all the time
and I start to believe it myself
Just 'cause it rhymes..." ~Making Records
she spends plenty of time thinking about real issues, concerns, and people, and so when she interprets these imaginary characters, they're bound to reflect what she sees and feels, but it's not like she sat down with an outline and a gameplan. She just sings what the song requires.
that's what i love about Regina, though. Sure she's unique, honest, informed, brilliant, beautiful, TALENTED, and adorable, but her music itself is really something unique.
most people sit down and have their own processes, affected by their agenda: what is the point of writing this song? some people want to make themselves sound good, so they put words together that sound nice when they're sung a certain way, and they make melodies that show off all of the good attributes of their voices. others write for certain emotions, and their music reflects that. But Reigna goes about music very differently-she's not going for a hit single, a chance to show off, or even expressing something personal to her. Instead, she starts poking around and waits for the song to find /her/, then she does her best to communicate the song, but she's said herself that she wishes she had more voices, so that she could sing the songs the way they should be sung. She's unselfish about her music.
The noises are the best she can do to express the music, not a cry for attention for being "quirky" or "offbeat". artist like her don't come along every day. She's like a singing sculpter (person who makes sculptures, not a sculpture herself). Rather than saying, "i want to sculpt a horse." and going on a hunt for a rock that'll do, Regina looks around at all of the rocks, and when one catches her eye, she starts poking around at it, trying to see what sculpture is waiting to emerge, then, when she understands enough of it, she hunts through her limited toolbox (sounds/accents/noises/impressions) to bring that sculpture into being. Sometimes it comes off in a way that others can comprehend, sometimes not. But i have an immense amount of appreciation for her music and her, considering she's able to dip into that same creative process again and again, seeing more lips and ears and boulders than she has the capacity to share with us, or even with herself.
so that's my daily Regina-lovin' rant (a.k.a. my 2.99 cents).
Love ya, Regina!
