Lyrics for Breathe as interpreted by wtfmates

Breathe Lyrics
This is surrender
to a wartorn life i've lived
scars and stripes forever
in need of change i can't resist

no need to hide anything anymore
cant return to who i was before

i can finally breathe
suddenly alive
i can finally move
the world feels revived

this long of a struggle
finally opened up my eyes
revolutions not easy
with a civil war on the inside

no need to hide anything anymore
cant return to who i was before

i can finally breathe
suddenly alive
i can finally move
cause I realise

i can finally breathe
suddenly alive
i can finally move
the world feels revived

i can finally breathe
suddenly alive
i can finally move
cause I realise

i can finally breathe
suddenly alive
i can finally move
the world feels revived

I can finally breathe
I can finally move
the world feels revived

It's pretty straightforward. Finally breaking free.

This song is awesome.

this is probably the track that lead to the album title and what Stephen was refering to in the explanation (New Surrender):

"We will all come to the point in our life where we have to admit that we feel defeated, that something has conquered us. We must change, not because we want to, but because we desperately have to. We can not take life in its current suffocating state, even to admit such desperation shows that we are feeling deserted, wandering the barren desert, a shell of our former selves. It is only up from here, it is impossible to sink any lower into ourselves or our circumstances. But we can be salvaged, a deliverance. No vice can stand, no fix can take. The thorn in the side can be removed, but you have to be willing to admit and surrender. Surrender your habits, your lifestyle, your past, your present, and your future. This is your new surrender. The new surrender."

just for those who haven't read it yet ^^

this album is awesome, but it also seems to be a little more "happy-go-lucky" than cities.

still good song, who cares about the meaning

wow. this song seems to be about just being yourself... thats how i see it. you've broken free of how the world wanted you to be.. and now you're free to be who you were meant to be. of course this was only after going through so much.. revolution, war, struggles.. wow. thankyou anberlin :)

Who cares about the meaning?!? I've only just heard the song for the first time but meaning is something that really seems to be marking this album. I have loved Anberlin but the songs have seemed fairly shallow (with exceptions of course) until this album. Music without meaning gets old really fast. This is a great song about... well surrender. Meaning is everything.

fatchicksean09, really? more happy go lucky? I found Cities to be a little angry, and New Surrender to be a little sad/emo.

I think the meaning of this song is fairly obvious, haha.
Having so many things going on inside your head,
and then finally getting it straight,
& therefore being able to "breathe."
Seeing the world in a new way because you can see it more clearly.

@sweetsongs, Truth be told, I've felt like the music told more of a story in previous albums. On New Surrender, I feel like the lyrics are telling a story, but the music feels a little more manufactured. I would tend to agree with fatchicksean09 that New Surrender is much lighter than Cities.

anberlin has always had deep songs, if you only took the time to pay attention.
"so tired of writing songs where people listen and dont know whats going on"

I think that this is a song that they wrote so that we WOULDN'T have to sit here and wonder what it's about.
You know, like most of their songs have a deeper meaning than what it seems at first, and you have to think about it for a while?
But this one is so obvious.
Something's been troubling him for awhile,
and he's taken care of it, and he now feels free.
Problem solved.
End of story.

& that's about it.
It's one of the most amazing songs they've ever made. :)

For me it means letting go of the sin that has dragged you down so low, you feel despair and like you'll never get out. Letting go of your sin and asking Jesus Christ into your life requires surrender. Jesus Christ makes you breathe and when your world seems so down in the dumps, he revives it; he rescues you. That is just my interpretation of the song.

I feel like Universal changed them a lot. Their lyrics seem far more shallow than Anberlin of old.

Song is fairly obvious so I won't comment on that.

Are you kidding me? How is this not deep?

It's not about being "deep" anyway. Such a cliche.

This song is beautiful. And thank you Conversed, for posting the explanation.

Sometimes you're just so... hopeless... and all you want, and desperately need is freedom, peace, hope... this song makes me think of coming out of a tough situation and saying, Wow. I survived. Sweet peace.

I had an ironic experience with this song. I first heard it a week before I ended up being taken by ambulance to hospital because I couldn't breathe. It was all I had in my mind at 4am when I got into the amublance, knowing and trusting that I'd be okay - that's faith. It's about trusting that you'll be released from whatever is closing in on you. It's about realising that you're alive and can life as opposed to just existing. Such an amazing song about coming to life again as a result of a realisation. Thanks to Anberlin for putting this into words for us!
